WSU vs USU starting 5 matchups

1. Quayle vs Lillard
Advantage: WEBER

Quayle is a senior and has been selected as a WAC all conf first team. Him and Wesley are their 2 best players. Lillard is just a 19 yr old soph. Based on the past yr one would think to give the nod to Quayle even though both had a very good season, Quayle does have more experience. Based on what I think will happen in the game I give the advantage to WSU. This will be Lillard's best opponent of the year. Can anyone honestly shut down Dame?

2. Williams vs Session
Advantage: PUSH (as they say on PTI)

Williams' status is still pending and me may not play in the game due to ankle injury in October. they said he'd be out 4-6 weeks in mid-october. Session is a new player with a lot of potential he had WSU fans excited with a pair of dunks and good 3-pt shooting at the first exhib game. Sess comes to WSU from Saddleback JC a school well known by USU as they have recruited 3-4 players there in recent years. Sess averaged over 10 rpg as a 2 guard last yr. We don't know who will start for USU and do we even know if Session is the 2 and if Hansen is the 3 or vice-versa? Do to lack of experience at this position on both sides I can't give the nod either way.

3. Newbold vs Hansen
Advantage: USU

Hansen is a senior and Newbold is a junior. Since hansen is our go to man from the arc if he gets hot you gotta go with him. Again will hansen play the 2 or 3 and will Newbold play the 2 or 3? He was the 2 last yr so I still don't know if he lines up against hansen or not. Newbold last yr: 43.1 percent from the field, 39.5 percent from three-point range and 76.2 percent from the free throw line... Finished the year with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.96-to-1.00, which led the nation and ranked first all-time at Utah State... Also ranked seventh in the WAC in three-point shooting and 10th in assists per game... Led the team with 60 made thee-pointers and was tied for the team lead in three-point attempts (152)...

4. Wesley vs Bull
Advantage: USU

I believe we will be double teaming Wesley and trying our best to get him in foul trouble. I think our best body to put on Wesley is Mahoney but he won't be starting but should be ready for the game. Currently injured. At the same time I don't see Wesley stopping Bull as he can shoot from anywhere and prefers the perimeter. Wesley won't be stopping Bull from shooting 3's which he loves. Oh did I mention Wesley had the best game of his career against WSU last yr? He had a triple-double. Then again it was against a freshman starter for WSU. But still, he's very good.

5. Bendall vs Panos
Advantage: Push

Aggies are saying Bendall is very good and will do a good job replacing the WAC MVP that graduated. Those are some big shoes to fill. This one I am not sure on how to judge. Panos is a senior and if he can play good D we should be ok. Panos is a better offensive player than D. The USU game will be Bendall's first DI game in 4 years.

I thought Session was going to be starting at the 3 and Hansen at the 2. Anyway, I like Bull going against Wesley. Bull is a shooter and it will pull Wesley away from the center. I can see USU playing a lot of Zone against the Cats. Weber is a lot quicker this year than they were last year and it can cause some mis-matches defensively for the Aggies. However, I do think the Aggies are going to be hard to stop in the paint. What killed the Cats last year, or for that matter since 2000, has been the Aggie Big Men. Double teams start happening which leaves players open on the perimeter.

Also, I think Session is a bit better than Williams. I know he is better than Newbold. Hansen could be the most dangerous shooter on the floor, that is unless Lillard keeps shooting like he has.

Uh...minus Lance's senior year in 2005. Though we did lose but our guards weren't as good then compared to now.

I agree that Mahoney or Washington would be better on Wesley than Bull. But Bull does present match-up problems. The best way to defend against our starters is to go into a 2-3 or 3-2 but we all saw what Weber can do to a zone if they are hot.

I keep hearing that pooh wont be able to go by next week. If he is, he definitely wont be 100%.

Lillard will be the best athlete on the court. USU fans don't know much about Lillard as he was new last yr and his first start was against USU. They will be talking about him at half time.

True...

what about the question of depth on both teams? I don't know about the aggie's depth, but I would be surprised if they were as deep as Weber. We have three players that could start at center in most Big Sky Teams in Mahoney, panos and Morris. And we are extremely deep at the shooting guard position. I am a little concerned about our depth at the 4 spot, but really either Mahoney or panos can move from center to the 4 to give Bullinger a rest when he needs to. And we are still all wondering about how good Washington is and where he will play.

I would really like to see Washington, and see what he has to give. He was a walkon last year and earned a scholarship, so he's got to be pretty good. Also, Ramos left because he knew he was going to be behind one more person, so thats got to be an indication of Washington's abilities. Washington could play the 3, but is a terrible shooter, so, in all likelyhood, he is going to be playing primarily the 4. Good thing he has mad hops, at 6-6 he is a bit undersized.

After watching the last two exhibition games and seeing how good Hansen has played, I've got to say that Weber's got an edge over USU at that position. Newbold is a great player, but Hansen is better. Newbold, from what I've heard, didn't play very well in the exhibition games. Also, with Williams out, Session definitely has the edge. Session from what we have seen, has played extremely well. I'm very impressed with him. My concern is Panos and Morris... Can they stop Bendall and Wesley? And then who has the better bench. Granted, I am biased, but I think Weber has the better, more experienced, bench. Its going to be a great game tomorrow. I hope over 1,000 students show up to the game. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the Dee is almost full tomorrow. 10K??

Weber States Bench: PG Noble, SG Hughey, SF Hughey/Bullinger, PF Mahoney/Washington, C Morris/Mahoney. Pablo Coro will be out till the end of December and the three Freshmen, Davis, Fulton, and Crandell will all be Red-shirting, I think.

Should be a good crowd. I just hope that there are more Weber fans than Aggie fans. I'm expecting a good turnout of Utah St fans. They seem to be very excited about their team.

I agree with your assessment, except for Quayle v Dlill. Quayle is a very high quality player. Dlill is also, but since Quayle has more experience, I have to give the nod to him. Dlill has more raw talent and ability, but he is only 19 and Quayle is an old RM and has played a lot of DI ball.
This one will be very close. I think WSU wins at home and USU wins in Logan in Dec during the cheese tray tournament.

To lay to rest the Red Shirt issue. Here are the RedShirts FOR SURE!!!

Pablo Coro - Will RS not maybe, or anything else!!! :o
Byron Fulton
Blake Davis

Dee Crandall will NOT RS. He is a walk-on. He MAY work his way into a scholorship, but that will be assessed at the end of the season - or start of next season.

As far as Washington is concerned, do NOT expect to see him against USU. He is very athletic, but has some bad habits, and needs to work on fundamentals. He will see some action in future games depending on matchups, score, and etc. He is rough and if he works hard and learns the system, then he could contribute next year, but not so much this year. :ugeek:

Sounds like Brian Green is going to start in place of Pooh Williams. Utah St loses size with Williams sitting. Utah St will now be starting 3 guards and 2 forwards (although Bendall is 6-9). I think size will be a push tonight, and I think the game will come down to who shoots better from the perimeter. And I know Weber St is capable of being the better shooting team. Go Cats!!
