There was a time that I wish WSU was on EWU's schedule every year, not anymore.

The good news is that, despite the fact WSU is a phenomenal offense, they aren't a bad fit for the Eagle D. Unlike Oregon last year that went with a spread option and just ran all over, WSU is set to drop back and pick their shots. If I had to pick my poison, I'd rather see Eastern line up against a WSU-type offense than an Oregon-type offense.

Certainly WSU will score, the question will be whether the Eags can also ring up a lot of points.

I do agree that this matchup is a better matchup for EWU than when we played the Ducks last year. However, I actually think WSU is going to come out and look to run the ball against us. Leach and the media seem to think that RB is WSU's deepest, and one of their most talented positions. We need to stop the run against WSU. They'll still put it up in the air a ton. Maybe 50 times. But the cougs will run the ball more this year and run it affectively. They have some guys that are no joke at RB that didn't play last year but are going to make a name for themselves this year. It's not going to be an easy task for the Eags any way you look at it. We just need to be better on D period. I believe that our best chance to pull off the upset is to find ways to turn them over. Force fumbles, blitzes that force errant passes that lead to INTs, etc. We need to come out of their at least +2 in the turnover category and we might have a chance. I do believe our Defense will be improved this year. How much have they improved is the question. I'm definitely not giving up on the upset and I will be in Pullman myself doing my part.

News on the street is that Gabe Marks left practice early yesterday and didn't return do to a "leg injury." Knowing Leach and his injury update policy, we likely won't know much until they see him on the field again.

As far as the game, as Dopa mentioned yesterday, I just don't know what to expect from this team. I have reason to believe the coaching staff will have these guys motivated and ready to go and I think they'll be fine when it comes to talent. I don't think the Cougars are as good as being hyped right now, but they were pretty terrible 4 years ago when they squeaked one out against us. The Eagles of 4 years ago actually reminds me of this years team coming in to the season. Questions at quarterback, coming off disappointing season, and a lot of talent.

I think it will be fairly high scoring, but I think we have to hold WSU to less than 35 points to have a chance. I don't see winning a shoot out like at Oregon State or the almost win at Washington two years ago.

As of the 8th, another FB Roster have been printed with some changes. Does any of you know who JR is? That was the only name I got yesterday. Maybe one of the Players that didn't come in earlier like he was supposed to. Next practice, will get the name:) Friday Aug 12, @ 9:15am, first day in full pads. Sat Aug 13, first of two a day practices, 9:15am, and 3 pm. Take care. Vic Wallace

ewueagle2010,
I am not worried about our team, they always surprise us when they play. What I have seen in the practices, I wouldn't want to make any predictions. I will assure you, when Sept 3 arrives this team will be chopping at the bits for WSU. I will watch it at my friends home, I just don like driving those roads, and especially when there is a FB Game. I learned when my son Vic Jr. was at Idaho Vandals in the 80's. We used to make it long weekend. Wife is in the Academy as yet? Wish her the best of luck. Hope she can get a class here in Spokane, it will be better, instead of driving to Burien. Good Luck! Vic Wallace

Hey Vic, good to hear from you. I have all the confidence in this program. Last year was tough to watch but I have high expectations for them this year despite what looks to be a brutal schedule. Yes, my wife is in week 2 of the Academy and she did get into Spokane! Excited that she's home every night, but she's still very busy as you can imagine. I'm very happy for her! Take care!

Looking at EWU's last 7(FBS) opponents under Coach Baldwin:
30-27 Washington over EWU
3 -17 EWU over Idaho
24-20 WSU over EWU
46-49 EWU over Oregon State(#25)
31-17 Toledo over EWU
59-52 Washington over EWU
61-42 Oregon(#7) over EWU
All Coach Leach has to do is show his players these STATS and scores, which are 36.28 points to EWU's 32, and this shows that EWU always shows up to play against D-1 opponents. Plus, he'll also remind his players what happened last year when Portland State upset them in the 4th quarter. There's plenty of motivation for WSU players and staff. But if there's ever a time to notch a win vs a PAC-12 or D-1 (FBS) opponent, it's week 1. So GO EAGS, lets kick some ass and play up to your potential and a WIN WILL happen.

talon38,
Glad to see you are still on the blog. Haven't heard from Dozy on since his son graduated. What I have seen in EWU Team, they will surprise many of Teams. Granted it is early, and what I have seen we still needs more work. Glad to see someone still have the scores from our games with PAC 10/12. I will stay in Spokane and watch the game, I hate the drive to Pullman, especially for a FB Game. Seems like it takes all day to get out of there after a game. All kind of construction are going on around the Campus. The Players have to go around the construction down on the other side of the Tennis Courts. Pipes are being laid in the area. The practices will be held on the Grass Field until Aug 17, then to Roos Field, can't wait to see that. I will be glad when all the construction is completed in the area around Basketball Court, and the FB Area, it is a mess. Enjoying the Overseas Flight? Hope to see you are some of the Scrimmages/Games. Vic Wallace

To All,
Glad to have been at the Saturday P.M> Practice. Hot like you know what. I sat in my truck for about 1 -1/2, hour, and left before practice was finished, couldn't stand the heat. All the construction in the are causes all kind of problems. The team is coming along just fine, but I noticed a few are limping around. Met 4 more New Players, #42 Joe Lang, DB, #48 Kedrick Johnson, DB ( He said he was switched to Safety), #53 Conor McKenna, LB, (From G-Prep), #66 Rudolph Mataia Jr. DL,( For most of you that knew Will Kota, DL he could past for his Twin Brother). Did see Jason Talley RB, #47 Roy Hyatt LB, #72 Keith Moore, DL (He look very strong, and tall) #78 Connor Crist, OL, #79 Nicholas Blair, OL #82 Xavier James, WR. All of our Recruits are in. The practices are on the Grass Field until Aug 17, then to Roos Field. Scrimmage on Aug 20, approximately 09:45 am. Saw our Women Soccer Team came back from a 1-0 on Saturday at the half, and won 4-1. Don't forget Thursday Aug. 18, at 5:30 pm, can pick up your FB Tickets, in the little room behind EPIC, Northern Quest, coming in from the South Parking Lot. Hope to see many of you there. Vic Wallace

how good is WSU's defense supposed to be this year?
They should be pretty solid. Their fan base and coaches are pretty excited about their secondary. They need to replace some talent that graduated at linebacker though.

I really believe we can beat the Cougs. I think back just a few years ago when we played OSU when they were ranked #25. Not many believed we could go into Corvalis and pull off the upset. Somebody already referenced the fact that VA was a soph then, and we have a soph now with a similar skill-set. To pull off the upset in Pullman I think we need to hold the Cougs to under 50. I believe that we can score in the 40's with the offensive weapons we have and I also believe we could win a game in the 40's in Pullman. The key will be on defense. I was watching a Pac 12 special on the Cougs today. It was interesting to me that the Cougs went from 8 forced turnovers in 2014 to 24 forced turnovers in 2015. Look what that did to their win/loss record. The yardage they gave up per game in both of those two seasons really wasn't all that different. What I'm trying to say here is that I think we need to look at that model. I doubt we're going to stop a lot of teams from putting up large yardage numbers on us so I think we need to focus our attention on creating big turnovers. It might mean playing a little more risky on defense but what do we have to lose. Shoot, we've proven year after year that conservative defense doesn't do much for us. I'll stick with my story -- to beat the Cougs we need to go at least +2 in the turnover department.

We call games aggressively on offense, so why not more on defense?

Although I do think it's situational. Teams like NDSU and UNI play very disciplined football and take advantage of your mistakes.
