Okay, we all know how biased the Deseret News can be, but to liken BYU's upcoming class/es to Michigan’s iconic, and might I add, NCAA Penalized, Fab Five of the early 90s is not only ridiculous, but absolutely insulting to the legacy and tradition of college basketball.
The Fab Five changed the game. Changed how we viewed college basketball, and were perennial national contenders. The Fab Five were all top 50 national recruits and proved how valuable they were once they started playing together. Chris Webber, Juan Howard, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King, & Ray Jackson are being compared to 3 kids from Utah County? TJ Haws must be Jale Rose in reincarnate and Erick Mika is the new Chris Webber, a kid who didn’t even play his JR year of high school? Yes, Rose has done a good job recruiting. He doesn’t really have to leave Utah County. His players are among the best in Utah, but nothing close to the best in the nation like the Fab Five were. The Fab Five is, perhaps, the greatest class ever assembled in the history of college basketball. Three ended up being lottery picks in the NBA draft and the other two played professional basketball (Ray Jackson never made it in the NBA being cut by the Knicks and Pistons in the pre-season). None of the Lone Peak boys have a straight shoot at the NBA. Could they? Sure, but all three? Come on…
BYU’s upcoming class/es, they aren’t all in the same class, who knows which ones will serve LDS missions, and those who won’t (likelihood is very possible) and finally, the two most important players, which would truly make this one of the top recruiting classes (I can admit that) in BYU history aren’t even true possibilities. Jabari Parker is around 5% assured of attending BYU. Would you if you had the likes of Duke, UNC, Syracuse, UCLA, Kansas, and Kentucky after you? Playing in the ACC is a bit different than playing in the WCC. Nonetheless, will all five, if they were lucky enough to land Dystrop and Parker, even play together? NO... Parker is a one and done type of player. He will head to the NBA after one season.
What this all comes down to is the fact that the Utah media, especially the Des News, is extremely biased and doesn’t practice journalistic restraint. You can’t make these type of claims responsibly. To say a white kid who has been given everything is on par with a guy like Jalen Rose who grew up in Hell is libel and should be prosecuted as such. These nimrods prove, time and time again, how little they understand the world they live in. Yes, these Y commitments are talented and will be formidable, but to compare them with the Fab Five is proof of the lack of journalistic credence, professional, and ability in Utah. Once again the Des News proves how little credibility they have in the state. Something Cats, Aggies, Utes, Wolverines, and T-Birds all share.
