WTH: What the Catcat 34-16

Okay, so, if you were at the game yesterday, you might have been doing the same thing I was at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Scratching your head wondering "WHERE THE HELL" this team has been. Until the Booker "fumble" (I didn't get a good look, but it looked as if he was down), I really thought the Cats had a chance to beat #5 MSU. Weber was the better team yesterday, Turnovers were the difference. I'm sure our Bobcat brethren might disagree, but facts speak louder than opinion. Weber turned the ball over on downs 3 times and TO's 3 = 6 losses of possession. The last one really doesn't count, since the game was out of reach, but the turnover at the goal line, another turnover on downs, two fumbles while driving, and the INT practically at the goal line all killed the Cats. Yes, the INT and first fumble were legit. The other fumble and the loss of the ball at the goal line were, well, not, but bad reffing is something all Big Sky teams have to deal with so...no matter, that team was not the one we have been watching the past few weeks. What is different? Pflu was calling a great game, the line was blocking, the defense looked better, and our special teams were great. No turnovers and doing a better job at the goal line -we can argue all day over the spot, I think that Half judge was a total nitwit and totally missed it, but Weber had four plays to get a first down and or a TD and didn't execute- we could be celebrating a WSU victory (being stopped at the goal line happened before against our friendly Bobs, I'm thinking one of our Bobcat friends has a picture of the event memorialized as his avatar, big jerk ). Yesterday's game was very inspiring and got me hoping again. I'm hoping the team can turn things around and get some wins. What happens if wins happen?? Does Sears get retained? Was the team shell-shocked from the Utah and Utah State games? Was it too much too soon for such a young team? Is Tiatia that big of addition to our OL? What was different? Chip look amazing. Now I have all the confidence in the world in him. He looked a thousand times better. I'm just amazed!!

I wouldn't get too carried away. Yes, credit to Weber, they finally showed some positives and signs of life, but we need to see how things play out the easier half of the season. I would not call Weber the better team on field or they wouldn't have had the turnovers, and call me old-fashioned, but a 34-16 loss pretty much decided with a melt down in the 4th, does not equate to a better team.

I watched the (recorded) game again, later, and I really don't see it as a poorly officiated game, not in the least. Booker was not down, just literally bent in half, backwards. I hope he wasn't injured in any way. That was a truly unfortunate TO. A big :thumb: for the fifty yard FG and a big  for the two times and potential 6 additional points that could have be gained if the coaching staff (and it looked like Sears may have "over-ruled" Pflu one time) would have played (this team's) odds and played it more conservative on 4th down.

I do think a part of their problem has been from being shell-shocked at the pukes and Aggies and, I too, have a glimmer of hope restored but I also worry this could have just been a match-up thing and/or a case of MSU coming off a bye week and possibly overlooking Weber. It was awesome to see Chip get a little protection and enough time to make some throws  . Let's see how they look the rest of the way and hope for the best!

Chipper really showed what he is capable of. It's going to be fun to watch him develop. I spent some time watching Sears coach and for some reason I believe in the guy. He wasn't ready to be a head coach but after 2 seasons of development he may be ready. I would be fine with him staying if we were compeditive in all the remaining games and won 2 or 3 more.

Pump the brakes, tal. Still way too many stupid mistakes and coaching errors. And we still lost by 18. But I would agree that there was some improvement. Can't really say I was embarrassed by this loss like all the other losses this year.

I saw improvements on Saturday, but I also saw a lot of the same, I dont know why our defense caves in after a turnover, that's when we need them the most and it seems that is when the defense is at it's worst.

Chip showed signs of what he could be in the future, a little more work and he could be pretty good.

Despite the series being a little lopsided, Weber State and Montana State is a rivalry game, and the games are always competetive.

Go into the bye week, get injuries taken care of and lets take it to Portland State, at this point in the season losses will not bother me if improvements can be seen.

I'm not saying this team is all world now, people. I'm just saying that the team looked far better, and like it or not, at the start of the 4th quarter Weber was in a position to steal a huge win. Weber had 497 yards in the game, against a team whose strength has been defense for the past decade. Yes, untimely TO's, cost the Cats dearly, but none of you were in SLO last week. I had NO faith in the Cats after having to watch that travesty of a football game. To see Weber play as well as they did on Saturday, after weeks of TERRIBLE football, was nice.

I agree with you Tal, Weber played a great game after so many absoballyspiffenlutely horrible games. Hopefully they can continue to improve, I would hate to see this team take a major step backwards after this game.

By the way shouldnt your title of the thread be WTC: What the Catcat? ;-)

Don't get to ahead of yourself Tal. Weber has four games left. Let's see what happens in those before we get too excited about one game. But the way they played on Saturday, against the #5 team in the nation, got me thinking. Maybe it is best to wait things out a bit longer than to expect immediate results from a team composed mainly of 18 and 19 year old kids. Tiatia was a major contribution to Saturday's success. Sign that an OL should be the most important piece of any football puzzle. Weber needs to be recruiting two or three lineman who could immediately contribute next year, especially a Center.

Agree to all...was thankful that the Wildcats showed up with an understanding of what "competitive" means on this televised game...even Akey sounded positive on Big Sky football and said Weber State can build on several + from their play. :twocents:

I did still notice far more problems with fundamental technique than seems reasonable for collegiate players half-way into a season but at the same time understand the youthfulness of the team and questionable coaching at times. That is a great observation with the D and looking back on it seems to be very true.

Anyone think Weber is particularly small this year compared to opponents? I know they always look small on the field when lined up against MSU, but it's stood out to me in most games this year. Are they really small or am I seeing things? I don't necessarily see that as simply being a youth thing.

I'm very cautiously optimistic at this point, which, by the by way, is a vast upgrade from last week.

Agreed!! The team lost the game on Saturday, because, well, they didn't take care of the ball. Two fumbles on long drives when it seemed that the Bobcats couldn't stop the Cats, and an unfortunate INT which I feel was well timed; the ball was a bit under-thrown. Also, execution was off, a lot. But, agreed, whenever, Weber commits a TO, the defense takes the series off and it always ends up as a score for the other team. That was the difference. MSU had 23pts off of Weber State TOs. I'm still confused about the 2pt conversion. The ball bounced in the end zone, and then was picked up by the Bobs. Can we get a clarification about the ruling?
