The information for submitting questions for the coach's radio show tonight is all listed below...

How to submit questions for the Coach's Show tonight

-You can put them in this thread and I'll use them tonight

-You can e-mail them to me at: [email protected]

-you can call the show and ask yourself 208-233-5734 (local calls), or 1-800-726-5734 (toll free)
Please include your first name and where you live. It's helpful to be able to say "John in Shelley has this question"...or something like that. However, you don't have to include first name...but as in letters to the editor in newspapers...preference goes to those who provide some identification. Hard questions are not discouraged, but we will not be using questions that bear any semblance to "personal attacks".

Besides being on KSEI (AM930) and KRXK (AM1230 in Rexburg), please note that you can listen to the show online through Stretch Internet through the http://www.isubengals.com site (courtesy of Dr. Michael Sutton at Cedar Hills Family Dentistry in Pocatello) , but if you listen online and decide to call the show, the audio you hear on your PC is substantially delayed (20 secs or more), so there can be problems trying to talk on phone and listen to radio. You can call and give your question to the engineer, who can pass it along

GENERAL COMMENT:

I am not going to lie–I am a big O’Brien homer. I love the guy and I think he is the best coach that Idaho State has had in a long time.

Some coaches believe that FT’s are about confidence and drawing too much attention to it in practice can cause kids to over think at the line during the games. Not saying it is wrong or right but it is something that I have heard quite a bit.

Joe needs his butt spanked for trashing that fan on the air. Look, when you get less than 3,000 fans to a BSC game against Weber State–you cannot afford to alienate the casual fan. Everyone that watched that game, knew that ISU had a number of opportunities to win the game at the FT line. I am certain that a great number of fans were scratching their heads and mumbling about FT’s as they drove home after the game.

My point is this–O’Brien said that he doesn’t care if that fan ever comes to a game again. These are the types of comments that can turn casual fans away from supporting the team in the future. It may only be a handful or so–but ISU needs all the support that they can get.

I think Coach O’Brien has grown as a coach since he first came to Idaho State. I think he has made great strides managing that bad temper of his. However, the Saturday night post game show was a step or two backwards.

I’d like to see Coach O admit that he was wrong and apologize to the fan base in general for the comment that he made.

I like O'Brien too, but when you consider that we've only got a 4-14 overall record and 1-5 conference record, I think our chances of making the postseason league tourney have been flushed down the toilet. And that's a shame too, when you consider that we've got seven seniors on this year's team. It would have been eight, but Busma came down with a stress fracture in his foot and will play again next season. Does O'Brien have just one year left on his contract? Maybe we should feel sorry for the guy though and just have him here for the long term. After all, he was mandated by administration that he had to play over $300,000 in guarantee games again this season. And it would have been a major upset if we would have beaten teams like Iowa State, Utah State, BYU, and Notre Dame.

He is in the first year of a three-year contract. As I stated elsewhere, we have shot over .667 from the line in 14 of 18, and .692 or better in 13 of 18, but three of the worst FT% games were at home against Boise State, Montana and Weber State, so our fans think we are a poor free throw shooting team because of the sample size (three of the six home games have not been good...under .57%). In reality, we shoot very respectable from the line (.683).

For comparison....two games ago, Weber State was 17-of-31 from the line against Montana ... that's under 55% ... sometimes bad shooting nights from the line will happen. For us, it happened on the wrong night.

Just throwing that out there for you guys...

On the coach's show last night, Joe said he's altered practice this week so that his players will be shooting free throws at the end of practice. Joe ends his practices with the basketball version of the "two-minute drill," whereby players simulate the final minute or so of a game. This will give them the opportunity to practice free throws when they are fatigued.

Any apology to the fan?
I asked Joe if he regretted what he said on the postgame interview about the fan that mentioned the FT shooting and he said he did regret it...he shouldn't have taken it out on the fan, and he had gotten caught up in the emotion, just coming from locker room full of players...some shedding tears...and heartbroken...because they had not done what it took to win. He said he was sorry he let his emotions get away from him...and the last thing he or anybody else at ISU wants to do is drive away fans.

For those of you that didn't hear it...you can listen to it as soon as Stretch Internet gets last night's show archived.

It will be here: http://isubengals.cstv.com/multimedia/stretch.html

Underneath the Stretch Internet logo will be a line that says:

"Click here to listen to archived broadcasts."

Do it...and it will take you to archived broadcasts...

I have always believed that most things can be forgiven with a heartfelt apology. I am a big fan of Coach O'Brien and now I am an even bigger fan. I appreciate the way he handled this. The fans will, too.
