Young players to watch 2016: Discussion One, Linebackers

Hey guys, just hoping to spark some discussion during the off season. We are going to be talking about young players that haven't seen much playing time, but have a lot of upside in 2016. I'm starting with the linebacker squad, because this seems to be the position which will have the most youth/turmoil/adversity this 2016 season.
These men have a huge opportunity to leave their mark at EWU throughout the rest of their football career. Huge leadership opportunities with Jake Gall retiring. There will be one lone senior linebacker on the team. Let's hope he can stay healthy.

1. Alek Kacmarcik, Sophomore:

2015 Stats:
Games Played: 9
Tackles: 64
TFL: 4
Sacks: 2
Interceptions: 1
Alek is a player whom I feel didn't get nearly the discussion he warranted. Alek is fast for his size and specializes in reading plays. At the beginning of the season, Alek was listed as the starter over Jake Gall. Was this due to Jake Gall's injury, or was Alek legitimately competing with Jake, a highly touted EWU defender as a freshman? I can't remember, but what I can remember is seeing Alek during Spring 2015 being one of the loan bright spots on our defense during Spring scrimmages.

With Jake Gall leaving, Alek is likely to fill his role at strong side linebacker. I expect Alek to be the next cornerstone of our linebacker crew starting in 2016.

Ketner Kupp, true sophomore

2015 Stats:
Games Played: 11
Tackles: 19
Tackles for Loss: 1
Interceptions: 1

Possibly the most exciting recruit of 2015. Could Ketner live up to the Kupp reputation? That has yet to be seen, but Ketner managed to play as a true freshman while Cooper did not. (Disclaimer: Our WR corps was much deeper than the LB crew). Ketner also had a lot more success in high school, being a three year starter with a two star (?) label.

Although Ketner played as a true freshman, it seemed like a kind of a waste, for he seemed to sit permanently on the bench, recording on 19 tackles. From what I saw of Ketner (not a lot) he isn't speedy, but can lay a big hit and cause a lot of disruption. A typical middle linebacker type.

Kurt Calhoun Sophomore

2015 Stats:
Games Played: 8
Tackles: 18
TFL: 2.5

Kurt was a solid football player for Zillah his senior year, putting up five straight 200 yard games in a row. Only one word I can say for this guy: Power. He is a freight train and when he gets moving, get out of the way. A lot like Ketner, Kurt thrives in disruption. I expect Kurt to become a key part of our blitz package, because he is elusive, powerful, and fantastic at rushing the passer. Once Kurt has some time to put bulk up and put some more weight behind his hits, he will be a player who can really shut down the middle.

Did I miss anyone? If there are any young linebackers you noticed who merit discussion, put them up! What do you expect of these three players?

Coming into the season I am predicting the following depth chart.

Strongside linebacker:
Alek Kacmarcik
Kody Beckering

Middle Linebacker:
Miquiyah Zamorah
Kurt Kalhoun
Ketner Kupp

Rover:
John Kriefels
(?)

Also 3 redshirt linebackers:
Jack Sandelback 6-3 215 Blanchet
Trevor Davis 6-1 210 Tumwater
Andrew Katzenberger 6-2 220 Lynnwood

Fall freshman
Conor McKenna G Prep high school first team 4A all state

Kacmarcik is the obvious one, but I've heard Bekkering is really promising as well. LB is going to be a position to watch...losing Jake Gall really hurts.

EWURanger,
Keep your eye open for #38, Tysen Prunty LB from Tigard HS, Beaverton, Ore. I have seen him in practice, and he will be ready to hit providing he remains healthy. He is 6'2" should be about 200 pounds by the start of the season. Zamora cousin should be in the play. Joey Zamora, QB has been out working 7 on 7. Will check them out tomorrow, 7 on 7 practice. Alek Kacmarcik, Kody Bekkering, should both be ready to go, they have been working very hard this year as usual. Vic Wallace

We now have 5 Quarterbacks with the addition of Zamora, with the young man from California, will have 6. Maybe someone will be moved? It is not up to me, that is our Coaches calls to make. Quarter Backs are as follows: Jordan West, Reilly Hennessey, Gage Gurub, Andrew Zimmerman, and Joey Zamora. Vic Wallace

I realize it is too soon to form a judgement about the new coaches but I am anxious to see what impact they have on the team.

If Kurt Calhoun is anything like his brother Tim, which I suspect he is, the defense will have something special. Tim was one of the best, toughest, hardest working guys to come through the program. After dominating as a freshman, he had to fight through injuries most of his career, but he was an absolute beast on the field, in the weight room, and a solid person.

I am excited to see Kurt play. I read an article about Tim working out with him in Zillah in the early morning hours, before starting work on the farm to get him ready. I expect a big jump from him this year.

Joey Zamora? I remember him in the state finals where he led Chiawana past Reilly Hennessey's Camas. I was surprised he wasn't recruited by one of the Pac 12 schools. This will be an interesting competition, Zamora looked like he was the best QB in the state after that game. I believe he also played linebacker and with his size I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up playing LB.

I really hope we do not go with the 4-2 this year. Even though we will be better up front, I think we'll be better running a 4-3 considering the athleticism of our LB's. I have a feeling Ketner Kupp will have a really good year and I don't see him sitting on the bench much. Hopefully these guys will put on a little size for next year because we seem pretty small at LB which can be an issue as the season goes on.

Although I don't think Ketner will have a bad year, I don't see him breaking out in 2016. Unless he had immense improvement (possible, because he is Cooper's brother), I kind of feel they should redshirt him and give him more time to develop.

They should have redshirted him last year but I thought he played pretty well given the fact he was a true freshman and not that big. I think this may actually help him this year and he looks like he has that linebacker mentality. Not sure why they didn't play Kreifels at linebacker last year. Hopefully he is out of the doghouse, I thought the coaches over did it on the punishment thing.

wrrolling,
I remembered seeing Tim play many years ago, hell of a TE. I was very much impressed with that Big Blond Afro he used to wear. Kurt is an outstanding LB, I spoke to him and all the LB the last day of 7 on 7, they are all looking for the start of the season. Kurt stated that Tim is home in Zillah working on the farm. Keep an eye out for this LB, Cody Bekkerring, he really worked his butt off last year, and is now waiting to start playing the games. "Happy Easter". Vic Wallace

I'm wondering if safety might be a more natural position for him.

To All,
FB Roster is now ready, 81 Players are presently on the Roster. Here is hoping no one quit. We normally lose some Players. Don't forget the first practice is tomorrow @ 4 p.m. No Pads. Hope to see some of you there. The Recruits will be here after June Graduation. Vic Wallace
