Its been well documented about WSU's struggles the last 3 or so years. That got me thinking if Rahe continues to stay the same or heaven forbid get worse, how will he be remembered? Is he the coach who got us Damian Lillard, the most prolific player in our history & top 5 guard in the NBA, and players such as Bamforth, Berry, Tres, Bolomboy who all play professionally in some form or another? A coach who took a 10-17 team in 05-06 to a 20-12 team in his first season and continued to play teams such as half the Pac-10 in Washington, UCLA, Cal, Arizona, AZ State and other schools like UNLV, Oklahoma, and even as far away as Illinois and Dayton? A coach who had 20+ QUALITY wins in 6 of his 7 first years topping out at a whopping 30 wins and a home game in the CIT championship and garnering attention from other schools to be their next head coach?
Or is he the coach who had the most prolific player in WSU history and couldn't win a Big Sky Championship and failed the reach the NCAA tournament.
Is he the coach who coaches players out to find the next diamond in the rough or only goes 7 deep into the bench wasting multiple years of player's eligibility? Is the only reason we won that many games and developed Lillard is not because of Rahe but the training of Phil Beckner (who Lillard still trains with).Notice not a single player has been developed since Phil left.
A coach who buys his next 20 win season with DIII schools and pathetic D1 games. Still to this day cannot break a press or beat a 2-3 zone?
And the last dagger, ANTHONY JOHNSON.

Both some very great years and now trending towards some darker, Cravens like years. We arent there yet but it will interesting to see after the next 4 years how Rahe is remembered.

How many more years does Rahe have left on his contract? I was thinking not including this year, there are 3 more years left. Through the 2023 season. I'm glad they won last night, but Idaho is terrible. I think my city rec. league team could beat the Vandals. I really hope Rahe can right the ship and get us back on track competing for the Big Sky. I'm very very worried about next year though. Losing Harding and John is about 50% of our scoring. You never know with a new year. I'm hoping for the best. Maybe the next Arceneux and Gill will be coming in next year. :) Lets try and be positive  Go Weber!!!!

Randy is a good coach. He is the winningest coach in Wildcat History. Has a 8 20+ win seasons, with 2 25+, and 1 30+. He has won 5 conference championships, and gone dancing 3 times. He has coached some of the the greatest players in not only Wildcat History, but also Big Sky and State history. The guy is a good coach. However, because of his stubbornness, he will never be a great coach. Randy's biggest issue is doing the same thing over and over and over again expecting different results (in his defense he has made some recent offensive adjustments that have been absolutely terrible). Great coaches learn from their mistakes. There have been 10 consistent themes this season that have occurred since his first season or after a good assistant left. Beckner was a good assistant, but other good assistants left too and there was an obvious drop off after each one left. Linder, Beckner, Gardner, Berard, and Smiley. After each left there was a let down the next season. Regrettably, Randy hasn't been able to find another assistant to take the gaping hole left by Smiley.

Issue 1: inbound plays
Issue 2: breaking the press
Issue 3: player rotation and fatigue
Issue 4: loss of team concept
Issue 5: never changing the defense
Issue 6: keeping worn-out assistants
Issue 7: playing consistent to the buzzer
Issue 8: putting away teams (playing not to lose instead of playing to win)
Issue 9: inability to teach rebounding concepts and simple fundamentals
Issue 10: turnovers and creating more possessions

Your insights are very astute and I agree with the challenges you list. I may quibble a bit with the order, but your list of 10 issues nail it. :wall:
Randy has been a great coach at times but lost his edge and has not adapted to disruptions in basketball and athletes. He needs to read the innovators dilemma and the innovators solution by the late Clayton Christensen: adapt or die...

“When you’ve got a young team, sometimes it takes a while to learn how to finish. That’s what we’ve got to figure out, and it comes down to defensive rebounding, which is what we were working on today.”

“We don’t like losing, we don’t accept losing,” he said. “but at the same time, when you’re young and you play against a bunch of veterans, it takes a little longer sometimes to figure it out. But we’ll figure it out, and we’ll get better.”

Anyone want to guess which season these quotes came from? Brett Hein could just cut and paste the same quote every year and save Randy from having to coach-splain that we are a young team who nees to rebound better and doesn't know how to win yet.

Funny how all those other teams have such veteran talent year after year and yet Rahe always has the same team with the same set of excuses.

When you talk about a coach’s legacy it’s really about wins, players graduating and how they interact within the community. I’m looking at all the social media post from coaches and their assistants all around the country congratulating players on their graduation. Rahe and his staff are silent. Haven't commented on a player graduation since Dame.
I know it’s a minor thing, but programs are about success, why not let past, current and future Wildcats know that getting that diploma matters? Do they even care? Congrats to Harding and Morris on a job well done. Verifies Big Waldo’s post about Rahe not giving a damn about former players......... except for his golden goose.

is it rude to say the 8 are really 4 if you don't count D2 and NAIA's?

Not sure how it would be considered "rude" to state reality. The crap home schedule is one of the main sore spots regarding the "winningest coach in Wildcat History." Another accolade you can hang on him is the only coach to burn a historically successful program and fan base to the ground, or maybe that's rude to say.

Not just burning the program and fan base to the ground, but then turning around and insulting them saying they don’t know everything that is going on.

Budget cuts are coming no doubt. No NCAA tournament really hurt every D1 athletic department. And there's the real possibility of no football, or fanless football, and another canceled or fanless NCAA tournament. We'll find out what kind of man Rahe is when he's asked to take a pay cut.

With so much of his money coming from boosters, do you really think that they will ask him to take less? He should have voluntarily given money back the last few seasons. I really think that this is his sink or swim year. Not sure how we get out of his contract but I have a feeling their is some influential people ready to make it happen.

Athletics at Weber is mostly funded with student fees and playing guarantees. The amount of money the department makes off of boosters, supporters, donations, and ticket sales are the smallest portion of our budget (shouldn't be the case, but it is). That's what happens when you only depend on selling sponsorships and doing nothing else, marketing wise, for over a decade. The sponsorship option is starting to fail too. If you notice, each game more and more ads feature WSU departments. This is a bad sign. The barrel is starting to dry out. When you can't get enough from local groups or local groups stop seeing the purpose behind supporting Weber and athletics has to approach university departments to help, ugh. Realistically, why would you buy a sponsorship if there is nobody in the stadium to see it? Gotta get butts in the seats. three ways to do that...community events and dialogue, students (should be the easiest) and alumni. I'm a broken record on this topic.

I just dont see how we can get him to walk away. You know he wont take a decrease in salary. Especially with basketball off in the distance. Plus, they could play infront of no fans and most likely save money. No consessions, ushers, minimal staff, less electricity and water usage. Plus no fans yelling at Rahe. Win win in his eyes.
