Spring Football

Post by WSUWildcat » Tue Mar 12, 2019 5:53 pm

A few observations from today's practice:

We are stocked with several quality running backs. Josh Davis, Kris Jackson, Kevin Smith and Daniel Wright Jr. all looked good.

Quarterback field looks more consistent with their throws. Kaden Jenks was on the field with a noticeable limp and is still likely months away from being 100%.

Wide receiver position looked deep. Lots of talented players with returning experience here.

O-Line should be good once they are all healthy. Mo Cannon did not participate. Not sure about Tyler Downs.

D-line looked good. Hard to judge without full contact.

LBs and DBs look inconsistent. Some big plays by DBs, some long completions as well. Lots of work to be done here. Desmond Williams looked solid

Anybody have any observations from the second week of practice? It's been quiet. :coffee:

I didn't get a chance to go up there last week. But I will try and drop in this week. Also the Wildcat Club Luncheon will be on April 13th right before the Spring Game.

Spring football's final scrimmage is Saturday at 1:00. It will be a good chance to see how far the offense has come in the second year of a new coordinator. Almost everybody is back and we should be much better.

Also a good chance to see the rebuilding efforts in the defensive backfield.

Hope the weather holds and we get a good crowd. :thumb:

Some interesting roster notes from Hein’s article yesterday:

Sophomore quarterback Braden Miles and junior quarterback/receiver Justin Shaw have left the program. Senior safety Trey Hoskins did not participate in spring camp but is expected to rejoin the team in the fall.

Jacques Carter, a Clearfield High alum and former College of Idaho defensive back, has joined the team and will be a senior. Sophomore receiver Ty MacPherson (Lone Peak HS) returned from missionary service and saw snaps in Saturday's scrimmage.

Senior Gordon Moimoi and redshirt freshman Chinonso Opara both moved from defensive line to offensive line. David Jones, who carried the ball as a running back in 2017, moved to defensive back last season and made plenty of plays on special teams. He's again back as a cornerback. Hayden Meacham, a redshirt freshman from Layton High, moved from defensive end to tight end.

After hearing all of the talk about inexperienced DBs, I was expecting to see sloppy play in the defensive backfield. I didn't see that at all. They looked to be as talented as ever. I'm not sure about the line backers just yet, but the D line looked solid. Our offense looked leaps and bounds ahead of last year.

Add in our recruiting class and I feel that we will be improved on both sides of the ball from where we were last year. Last year we were BSC champions. That will certainly be the expectation this year.

Already have my tickets ordered. Can't wait.

Trey Hoskins expected to rejoin the team in the fall is good news for the DBs. Add in Boise St transfer Williams and I think the defensive backfield will be just fine. In fact, even after losing some key defensive players I don't think there will be any drop off on that side of the ball. And as the offense should be much better, I'm really excited for this team.

When I read that, I felt extremely confident in our secondary. Besides, a couple of highly touted and talented freshman still haven't arrived on campus yet. Those guys will only help improve our secondary and make it that much better.

As for the LB's, we do return a starter in Auston Tesch and a couple of guys who have lots of experience, especially Noah Vaea. Also, the JC transfer from Snow wasn't here this Spring and I'm sure he will help make us better too. By the time we reach August, I'm sure the LB's will be ready to go, and will definite surprise us once they take the field.

As for Spring games, it looked like one of the better ones that I have attended over the years. I didn't stay the entire time, but from what I did watch, definitely made me excited.

That's really good to hear about our line backing group. If that group can be anywhere close to what we had last year, we will be great on D once again. The DBs I saw Saturday looked solid to me.

I have already made plans for the roadie to San Diego. I plan to make a mini vacation out of it. Not sure if I want to go to Reno. That may be a last minute choice.

I’ll be @ SDSU for the opener as well. It’s about time for a win over an FBS school...

Already booked hotel and flights for San Diego. Expensive holiday weekend, but money well spent.

Given college athletics these days, and looking at the player turnover the basketball program has, I'm amazed at how relatively stable the football roster has been under Coach Hill the past few years. Jay has built a culture that kids enjoy and buy into, which is awesome. Most of the players that leave the program early leave for medical reasons, which can't really be avoided.

One thing that struck me about this spring's event was the increased number of players available on both sides of the ball. That was the most I've seen for a long time. I'm sure that there were a lot of walk on players taking part in spring ball. I expect that there will be more coming to fall camp to join the rest of our recruits. That is an added bonus of being successful.

Haven't been very involved this spring and didn't make it to the game. Saw that spring went well and that there were no major injuries (the most important thing from this Spring in my opinion). What piqued my interest the most though was what Coach Hill said about the team. That is some cause for excitement. Hope they have a great summer and keep working hard. Can't wait for August.

Hadley, Bartschi, Birch, and Lutui all from the 2017 signing class. I'm assuming they are all returning from missions.

Cowden signed with Portland St out of HS and was the Vikings starting punter in 2017, averaging 38.2 yards on 50 punts. Punted 7 times vs BYU in that season and earned conference player of the week. Roster shows him as a kicker and punter. Maybe he can place kick too. Looks like a good pickup that will have three seasons left to play. We should be very good and deep in both kicking and punting.
