Huge win for Bengal women

Post by Skippy » Sun Nov 12, 2017 4:37 pm

Brooke Blair had a career high 30 points and the Bengal women blew out Washington of the PAC-12, 79-59 today. So after losing their exhibition game against D-2 Northwest Nazarene, the Bengals have opened the season with two D-1 road wins. ISU has two power 5 wins in the last two seasons, beating Wisconsin last year.

Indeed, a big win. Most importantly, seemed like lots of improvement today. Tapasi is giving them good rebounding and Vincente was solid off the bench. What a difference 10 days make.

I guess UDub's last-place preseason prediction was not overly harsh. :?

Washington went to the NCAA women's Sweet 16 for the last couple of years, and they're the 25th ranked team in the country.

In one poll, yes. They were still picked last in the Pac-12 coaches poll, though. http://pac-12.com/article/2017/10/11/uc ... eason-poll

Congrats on the UW win! Always good to beat a power 5 opponent, no matter where they are picked in their conference.

There have been some good wins in the conference already. Idaho beat Colorado State (picked 3rd in the MWC) by 14, and Northern Colorado beat DePaul (picked to finish 2nd in the Big East).

Speaking of Northern Colorado, how in the world did they get the home schedule they did? LSU!? BYU? Colorado State? Pacific and San Francisco?

No question, but it's not like Washington is anywhere near what they were last season. Still, ISU's performance was certainly better than the Bobcats losing to an unranked USC by 51 Friday.

Those were certainly surprising wins. Portland State could have joined that list, but they blew a 21-point fourth-quarter lead and lost to UNLV in overtime. :ohno:

This kind of thing isn't as rare in women's basketball. Montana hosts both Kentucky & Gonzaga this week, and they hosted Colorado State last year. Big Sky teams often host BYU & Wyoming, and I believe North Dakota hosted Iowa a couple years ago.

Washington was a Final Four team 2 seasons ago (2016), and a Sweet 16 team this past season (2017). Nice win.

Interesting about the schedules. ISU has one non-conference DI program coming to Poky this year, USU. I thought maybe LSU was making a trip out west to play the likes of CSU, CU, or even Air Force, and they added UNC along the way. Not the case. It's a game sandwiched between games in Baton Rouge.

I’ve put together a list of the bigger conference opponents, bigger athletic budgets, more highly recruited athletes that Seton and his staff and team have beaten over the years. The list is getting damn impressive.

@ Washington (Pac-12) 11/12/17 Final: 79-59
@ Wisconsin (Big 10) 12/6/17 Final: 42-35
Utah State (Mt. West) 12/8/15 Final: 81-67
@ Boise St. (Mt. West) 12/11/15 Final: 80-77
Houston (Neutral Site) (American) 11/28/14 Final: 73-67
@ Boise St. (Mt. West) 11/20/12 Final: 64-55
@ New Mexico St. (WAC) 11/14/11 Final: 59-42
Boise St. (Mt. West) 11/17/11 Final: 84-75
So. Florida (Neutral Site) (Big East – at the time) 12/2/11 Final: 76-63
Utah St. (Mt. West) 12/10/11 Final: 67-65
@ Utah (Mt. West- at that time) 12/8/10 Final: 71-68 (OT)
@ Utah St. (Mt. West) 12/11/10 Final: 64-52
Utah St. (Neutral Site) (Mt. West) 12/5/09 Final: 56-53
Utah St. (Mt. West) 12/12/09 Final: 63-58
@ Utah St. (Mt. West) 11/22/08 Final: 58-43

Brook Blair’s 30 point game was the 8th time since Seton has been the head coach that one of his players has dropped 30 or more in a game.

Here is the list of those who did it:

34 points Lindsey Reed vs. Montana St. 2/20/14 W
32 points Apiphany Woods at Montana 3/11/15 L
31 points Chelsea Pickering vs. Portland St. 1/10/09 L
31 points Oana Iacovita at Montana St. (OT) 1/2/10 W
31 points Chelsea Pickering at Texas St. 11/23/10 W
31 points Ash Vella at Utah (OT) 12/8/10 W
30 points Oana Iacovita at Sacramento St. 2/26/09 W
30 points Brooke Blair at Washington 11/12/17 W

Northern Colorado picked up a P5 win tonight, beating LSU 58-50. Two good wins for the Bears in two very different style games.

Saw Washington lost at #9 Ohio State in Columbus this morning by 9. They also beat BYU by 8 earlier this week. If only our men's team could beat the Pac 12's last place picked team.
