Scouting Report: JT Elder

https://www.prephoops.com/2018/09/recruiting-report-jt-elder/

The Class of 2021 is absolutely loaded with great talent from top to bottom. The future of Arizona basketball is in good hands going forward. One of the most talented prospects in the Class of 2021 is Jason “JT” Elder (Cienaga). The 6’6 wing was a huge part of Powerhouse Dynasty’s 15U success this summer. Elder’s stock has continued to rise as we progress in the high school season.

Overall, he is the complete package. He has all of the physical attributes you could ever want in a prospect. He is tall, long, fast, and strong. Elder is very good at using all of these physical gifts on the court, especially in transition and finishing around the rim.

While he would be a great prospect simply because of his outstanding athleticism, he is also very skilled. Elder can shoot the deep ball, finish around the rim, knock down free throws at an extremely high rate, and has very solid handles. It is very hard to single out a valid weakness in his game because he has everything a recruiter could want.

Elder also plays with a lot of passion and fire which really benefits him defensively. He is always pressuring his man, causing them to make mistakes and capitalizing on their turnovers. This usually leads to a lot of break away dunks for Elder.

Jason Elder Projection

My personal opinion is that Elder can play ball at the next level. I see him playing Division-1 ball at a high-mid level school. He is a legit player and should be talked about in the conversation of who is the best 2021 prospect.

If Elder continues to progress the way he has, I see him generating some serious big time interest. I think he could be a 6’8 wing that can shoot the three, play defense, and attack the basket. I can’t think of a school that would not want that on their roster.

I project Elder will have a break out year at Cienaga. I expect him to continue to develop and lead his team to some wins in their division. I am very eager to see how his progression continues and to see how his career develops.

Looks pretty talented.

If he stays here. Looks like he left UW, went to South Dakota State but never played there, then wound up at Long Beach. His father even said not to "press" him about the Long Beach departure.

It's official!:

Marlon Ruffin Signs With Vikings Men's Basketball

https://goviks.com/news/2021/5/18/marlon-ruffin-signs-with-vikings-mens-basketball.aspx

The Portland State Basketball team continues to get stronger and deeper as new Head Coach Jase Coburn has signed his fourth student athlete since taking over one month ago. Coburn has signed Marlon Ruffin to an aid agreement for the 2021-22 academic year.

Ruffin is a 6-5 junior wing who has played the past two seasons at Omaha in the Summit League. Ruffin was the Summit League Sixth Man of the Year in 2019-20. This past season he earned honorable mention All-Summit League after averaging 13.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game and earned League Player of the Week honors on Nov. 30. Ruffin averaged 15.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in league games before an injury shortened his season.

"I'm really excited to add Marlon to our program," said Coburn. "He's a very talented scorer who can really shoot the ball. One of the things that excites me the most are his energy and passion to compete. You can hear his energy when you talk basketball with him."

Ruffin is a native of Madison, WI and was a first-team All-State selection at Sun Prairie High School as a senior. He also earned Big 8 Conference Player of the Year and All-Area Player of the Year. Ruffin played one season at Highland Community College, averaging 13.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and garnering second team All-NJCAA Region IV and All-Conference recognition.

As a sophomore at Omaha he played in all 32 games, averaging 8.8 points and 3.4 rebounds. His junior season Ruffin started 11 of the 16 games he played. In two seasons, he shot .417 from the field, .371 from three-point range and .723 at the free throw line.

Ruffin joins a Viking team that currently has 10 players returning for 2021-22, including three starters. Coburn has signed four transfers over the past month.

Coburn has been with the Viking program for eight years, including five as an assistant coach and three as associate head coach.

Viking Men's Basketball Signs Michael Carter III To Aid Agreement

https://goviks.com/news/2021/5/18/viking-mens-basketball-signs-michael-carter-iii-to-aid-agreement.aspx

Portland State Men's Basketball Coach Jase Coburn has announced his fifth signing of the spring, as the Viking program adds Michael Carter III to the roster. Carter III has signed an aid agreement for the 2021-22 academic year.

Carter is a 6-5 junior guard who will transfer from Long Beach State. He began his career at the University of Washington. Carter started all 13 games he played in this past season at LBSU, leading the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game. Carter also averaged 3.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and shot .469 from the field. He played in 31 games, starting 19, in 2019-20. That season, Carter averaged 12.4 points and led the team with 82 assists and 33 steals.

"Michael plays with a competitive edge and chip on his shoulder. He brings a passion and spirit to compete that we need on this team," said Coburn. "I expect him to have a big impact on our program."

Originally from Seattle, Carter attended O'Dea High School where his team won the Washington 3A State Championship. He began his collegiate career at Washington in 2017-18 but saw limited action due to a hand injury.

Carter joins a Viking team that currently has 10 players returning for 2021-22, including three starters. Coburn has now signed five transfers over the past month.

Coburn has been with the Viking program for eight years, including five as an assistant coach and three as associate head coach.

Coburn Completes '21-'22 Roster With Signing Of Mikal Starks

https://goviks.com/news/2021/7/12/mens-basketball-coburn-completes-21-22-roster-with-signing-of-mikal-starks.aspx

New Portland State Basketball Coach Jase Coburn has completed his roster for the 2021-22 season with addition of Mikal Starks to the program. Starks has signed an aid agreement after transferring from the University of Georgia.

A six-foot point guard originally from Miami, Starks has played three years of collegiate basketball. He will have junior eligibility as he takes advantage of the NCAA's waiver for the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It was very important that we build a team," said Coburn. "When you turn the tape on with Mikal, you notice a lot of the characteristics I am looking for from our student-athletes. Having the right chemistry and mentality is very important to me. We know exactly what Mikal brings to the table and what we are expecting from him."

Starks is a pass-first point guard and strong defender who played in 18 games for the Bulldogs this past season. The prior two years he competed at Eastern Florida competing in 47 games with 26 starts. Starks averaged 5.1 points and 3.6 assists in 22.0 minutes per game during his time at Eastern Florida. As a sophomore he averaged 5.2 points, 4.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 26.0 minutes per game. Starks helped the Titans to a 22-11 rebounds and 9-3 mark in Mid-Florida Conference play. He was ranked as the number nine junior college recruit by 247Sports.com after the season.

Starks is the seventh signee by Coburn this off-season. All seven are transfers. The Vikings return eight players from 2020-21, three of whom are starters.
