Women's hoops opened up with a gimmie in Hornet Pavilion last night. Hornets rolled an upstart NAIA school 124-39 in the first game in the new venue. Hard to tell how good the Hornets look given the large disparity in size and talent, but this is going to be an exciting team to watch.

Hornets host a late morning game against Nevada on 11/6. This should give us a better understanding on how this team stacks up against D1 competition.

Hornets got a win over Nevada for the first time in 30 years with the 65-45 win on Thursday. Good crowd on hand for the late morning tip as the Hornets jumped on the Wolf Pack early and never looked back. Solid team effort with tenacious defense as all the pieces appear to be in place for this team to make some noise this year. The duo of Versteeg and Picton is going to be very entertaining to watch this season.

Big test on Sunday at Cal that kicks off a 3 game road trip against in-state rivals.

52-69 Hornet loss at Cal last night. This was a 3 point game with 5 minutes remaining but the Hornets couldn't pull of the upset as Cal pulled away late. Cal ended the game with a 22-2 free throw advantage. A solid performance on the road is a good litmus test of where this team stands. Should be a strong season.

Hornets head to UCSD for a Wednesday night tilt.

Hornets with a solid 71-60 win at UCSD last night. It was a game of runs with the Hornets coming out on top. Most impressive in this game, aside from the strong team effort, was the breakout performance of Rubi Gray (24 pts, 4 reb, 3 blk) who had a barrage of threes in the 2nd quarter and some clutch shots late in the game to maintain the lead.

The Hornets were battling foul trouble with both Benthe Versteeg (7 pts, 7 reb, 6 ast) and Fatoumata Jaiteh (9 pts, 9 reb) fouled out halfway through the 4th quarter. Natalie Picton (13 pts, 3 reb) was clutch at the stripe in the closing minutes that sealed the win and Brooklyn Taylor (9 pts, 7 reb) was strong on the boards late in the game that got the Hornets extra possessions to burn more clock in a close game late.

The Hornet bench is looking pretty solid early in the season which is a good sign of things to come. The Hornets have another road game at Long Beach State this Saturday.

Picton was such a huge get. Takes a lot of the plamaking pressure off Versteeg. This team looks like they will do some damage this year in the BSC.
