Next up Montana State

I say get rid of him this year. Of course I made potential head coach thread in 2024 after he lost to Drake so no shocker there

I guess it's up to the AD to find the money and decide if another losing season is worth the damage to the program aas it continues to hemorrhage support. I know former players that won't go to games it's so awful.

1988 eagle, you mentioned: Coach Best just trots onto the field...I had my eye on him last Sat. since it's been the only game in person I'll be in attendance. Nothing to do with not doing well. Man-o-man he is battling moving much less trotting. Labor of love I suppose although looking at his face throughout the game he almost looks sad...prolly just age has settled in. Anyone else remember when he was coaching for Wulff he would be up and down the field sprinting from one end to the other and talking so much Wulff made him bite of that towel all game long...use to be kinda like his trademark. He doesn't bark at the refs like he use to. Not saying he still doesn't have the fire...well kinda that's what I'm saying. He talks a good talk in interviews I guess... he has just matured like we all do.

At home against a really good team steaming from Idaho loss...MSU gets some players back from injury equates to a competitive first half of football the they cover the 22.5 pt spread. 65.5 over/under so we are gonna score some points to be sure. 21-45

I'm with E-WU Tang Clan. Coach Best needs to go ASAP. He's an Eagle for life(I appreciate all the loyalty and he is probably a good man) but the damage to the EWU football program is getting to the point of a dumpster fire. Coaching is just about everything in football especially at the FCS where there isn't a ton of NIL money.

You could give Coach Best exceptional facilties , alumni base , stadium, etc and he still wouldn't produce a football team at the FCS level that would win on a consistent basis . He just doesn't have it. When former EWU players won't even go the games then you know this program is in the toilet. He's getting to the point of being another TYRONE WILLINGHAM when he was the head coach at UW.( he made the huskies a laughing stock and a 0-12 season) It has to happen soon.

I suspect MSU will just do what every other team does to us, which is run the ball. We haven't demonstrated we can stop it consistently all year long. This makes the probability of MSU turning the ball over almost slim to none, which is what EWU needs to have any shot of winning. I suspect this game will be somewhere in the 48-10 realm. We simply aren't good enough to beat them in any phase of the game, save maybe kicking/punting.

I think most of us can separate the man from his record. I like him personally and think his contributions to the program and school are immeasurable, but just think the job has really taken a toll on the man.

And I think you can think Best is a great guy, be friends with him and acknowledge he isn't cutting it. Few jobs have something as concrete as a win/loss ratio lol

If Baldwin came back and wanted to keep him on as oline coach I'd be fine with that, assuming his ego can take the hit.

We are in agreement.

I'd love to see it, but in my opinion there's a 0.0% chance Baldwin comes back to Cheney. For one, he has health problems and hasn't coached in like 2 years. His last stint was in the CFL.

There are also legitimate questions as to whether he'd even be up to the task, his health issues notwithstanding. His last head coaching job was at Cal Poly, where he had an abysmal record, and his stints at Cal and ASU were very lackluster.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge BB fan, but it seems like whatever advantages he had at EWU in terms of strategy/talent/recruiting didn't cross over to his other experiences.

Could he overcome his post-EWU failures and do good things if he can back? Maybe. Would he be interested? Who knows. The human factor also matters, and I doubt he'd even consider head coaching anywhere again if there were doubts about his ability to stay the course and do the job to the best of his abilities.

I'd personally like to see us bring in a young guy who has ties to the PNW and can really recruit the I-5 corridor to its fullest potential. We have lost a lot of guys to Idaho, Montana, MSU, and even PSU in the past few years that I think we would have gotten in previous years.

Every thread on this site turns into a "replace Best" discussion, LOL.

The line has MSU as 21 point favorites in this one. That might be really generous to EWU.

Lost in this discussion is how great a season Nate Bell is having. I'll have to admit that I've been a skeptic, but he's really one of the only bright spots on this year's team. MSU most likely tries to spy him, but I don't think running the ball is EWU's best option to make this game competitive, especially considering MSU only allows 3.7 yards per rush. We'll have to hope that the offensive line can give Bell enough time to find his receivers, which is a big question mark after how poorly they played last week.

Bobby Hauck came back from an unsuccessful stint in the FBS and had Montana back in the playoffs the next season so it has been done. Cal Poly has academic recruiting restrictions that Eastern doesn't.

I don't even think Baldwin was in my top 2-3 in the HC thread. Head coaching is stressful even in the FCS and he may not be up to it.

He has played well, which is notable considering how banged up we’ve been at receiver and running back. He makes mistakes, sure, but in my opinion he’s a lot better than he was last season. Worth mentioning is that most of the improvement has come in his passing game. MSU can spy him and maybe that will work, but they can’t count out the fact that he’s a lot better throwing the ball this year.
