It's now official: the 2011 UNC Bears will have the worst record of any Division I school in the country with the added bonus of a humiliating opening loss to a transitioning NAIA team.... NCAA DII National Champions to a winless season; how the mighty have fallen. Valparasio and a couple of other schools may equal UNC's 0-11 perfect mark of ineptitude, but we got there first. For all of you who were screaming for Downing's head after last season, you reap what you sow. Let's consider where the Bears were this time last year. Against this same PSU team, the Bears finished the season by winning their third game, and for all intents and purposes looked like a squad that had turned a corner as they had been competitive for most games during the season, even pushing the national champions Eastern Washington to the brink. Most of Pederson's offensive players were coming back, and even though the defense would have to be rebuilt, Deti had shown himself to be an effective coordinator. So, then came the firing of Downing and the bewildering head coach search that left more than a few of us scratching our heads. O'Boyle? Stitt? No, Hinrichs did not want a proven winner. He knew better.. And now, thank god, this miserable season is over... many of you have said that Collins needs time... let him recruit him players and them you'll see... I heard this and more when Downing went 1-10, 1-11, 1-10... How many years will Collins get before the knives come out? He's a good man with some more than suspect assistant coaches. Does he have what it takes to really make the transition from assistant to head coach and lead a team to a winning record? Time will tell... so, what's the school's football record over the past 5 years? 6-50? The worst in the country? That statistic is too depressing to look up... So, what's the constant here? What's the common denominator? Hinrichs... there's nothing left, no other excuse... time for a change...
