#1 E. Washington vs. SAC STATE

I think only games televised on Root are not available on BSTV; so this one should be on BSTV. As far as the commentators go, the Hornetsports release said a local TV station is producing the game so I imagine/hope that the commentators will know FCS but will probably be EWU homers. Maybe SE174 can chime in and let us know how the 2 commentators (Sam Adams and Bill Ames) are?

Prediction:
I’m going with a homer pick in this one. I think we pull it off 31-28. Safron needs to take care of the ball and have a good game and the defense needs to slow down EWU’s offense just enough to keep us in it. If it is close heading into the 4th anything can happen.

I've never watched an SWX production (I'm always at the game), so I wouldn't know. I don't think they're too bad, from what I've heard from others.

Yup you guessed it, this week's game will be on TV.  8-)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Saturday's football game between Sacramento State and No. 1-ranked Eastern Washington will be televised locally on Comcast Hometown Network (Channel 104). The broadcast will begin at 4 p.m. PT.

The game will be produced by SWX television out of Spokane with Sam Adams and Bill Ames providing the commentary.

Do any Dish Network users know what channel this is? I won't be home this afternoon and I want to DVR the game, but I'm not finding it listed in the normal 400 channel range. I did see that UC Davis game will be shown on Dish Network though (boo!).

The defense is going to need to get some stops, they're allowing really long drives. These long drives are keeping the offense off the field, only three possessions in the first half.

Safron needs to make some plays!!

13-7 EWU at half. I tuned in midway through the 2nd qtr. The Hornet WR's have been an embarrassment so far. Safron's throws haven't been the best but they have been catchable and the WR's had some significant drops.

Defensively it's just a matter of time until EWU blows this one wide open. The EWU receivers have some drops. Parker is being too conservative imo but the plays the Hornets have blitzed on didn't generate any pressure. Hats off to the EWU OL for giving the QB's time (Adams was benched for Padron late in the 2nd qtr). Hornet D is bending but not breaking but that will only last so long if the Hornet offense keeps sputtering.

Having said all that the Hornets are in this one and that's all anyone can ask for at this point.

Good game Sac St. fans. You have a solid team this year and I think even with this loss you have a shot at the playoffs. I'll definitely be rooting for you when you play Cal poly.

Hell of a game. 31-28 loss. Hornets suffered a lot of injuries tonight. Defense played well but Parker had some awful play calls on multiple 3rd and longs that ultimately were the difference. Kudos to EWU for making plays too when they had to make them. Hornets shouldn't hang their head about this one. They battled the whole game and had a chance at a Hail Mary at the end. Tough game that was close the whole way but a gritty effort by the Hornets.

Safron went down late in the game with a hand injury. I think Weaver went out earlier in the game. Norrise took a low shot to the ankle in the last drive. Maybe a couple other injuries as well. The Hornet WR's are awful once you get below Norrise and Carter on the depth chart. Robertson had a chance for some plays and he just can't get it done. Knowles was so-so. He had a huge catch late in the 4th to pull it to within 3.

Again no need for the Hornets to hold their heads on this performance. Need to find a way to bounce back against a tough Cal Poly team though.

I was impressed with the play of the backup quarterbacks on BOTH sides. That is especially true of Magleby, however, as he had to enter the game in the middle of a drive after Safron got hurt gutting out a HUGE first and goal.

Personally, I thought that hit on Norrisse was a cheap shot. That should have been fifteen and a first down. I'm not sure what good the 15 would have done us there, as it would still have been a long throw (I'm not sure it would have put us in FG range).

That said, Eastern was tough, as we all expected. We brought our "A" game, for the most part, and still came up short. Given that this was the #1 team in the country, our boys should hold their heads high. Given normal development, things are looking good going into next year, and THIS year isn't even over yet. We only have to win a minimum of two games over the next three and we'll have a shot. And Eastern will represent our league well in the playoffs, too.

Recap/Thoughts

The Hornets were narrowly edged out and fell to 5-3 (3-2 BSC) in a 31-28 loss to EWU. I missed a lot of the first half but the Hornets battled the whole way and had a respectable showing. The Hornets were in a position to pull off a shocking upset but ran out of time. The Hornets need to find a way to regroup and squeak out some wins if this team wants any shot at the post season.

Offense
The offense had a good opening drive but then was held in check until late in the game. The offense didn’t put up big numbers but the running game was effective and the Hornets were able to move the ball when it mattered down the stretch. Safron wasn’t throwing a great ball but for the most part all of his passes were catchable. The WR’s had some key drops early in the second half that absolutely killed some drives. The OL did an okay job against a stout EWU front. They did allow pressure to get to Safron and Magleby at times but for the most part held their own. The Hornets did have a shot at a win at the very end but didn’t have enough time to mount a drive as a Hail Mary came up short.

Game Stats:
  • • Passing: 163 yds (9.1 ypc), 2 TD’s
    • Rushing: 125 yds (3.8 ypr), 2 TD’s
    • Total Offense: 288 yds, 4 TD’s, 0 FG’s
    • Time of Possession: 26:06
    • Turnovers: 0 (0 INT’s, 0 Fum’s)
    • Penalties: 5 for 40 yds
    • (#12) Safron: 16 of 26 for 127 yds, 1 TD, 0 INT’s, 8 carries for 32 yds
    • (#4) Mason Magleby: 2 of 4 for 36 yds, 1 TD
    • (#8) Graham: 17 carries for 82 yds, 1 TD, 3 recs for 36 yds
    • (#13) Norrise: 5 recs for 53 yds, 1 TD
    • (#9) De’jon Coleman: 7 carries for 11 yds, 1 TD
    • (#17) Knowles: 3 rec for 22 yds, 1 TD
    • (#2) Carter: 6 recs for 49 yds
    • (#81) Robertson: 1 recs for 3 yds
    • (#15) Harrison: None
    • (#21) Ellis: None
    • (#10) Dotson: None
    • (#24) McCowan: None
    • (#80) Broadnax: None
Even though the Hornets didn’t put up big numbers the performance was okay, but the Hornets needed a stellar performance to knock of an elite EWU team. The Hornets didn’t have any turnovers and that was key in keeping this one close. Graham is a complete gamer, he had some great plays that kept this offense moving and really stepped up for the occasion. The lack of a deep threat in the passing game was glaring in this one. Safron threw up a good deep ball to Robertson and he needed to go up and make a play but couldn’t get it done. Those types of plays need to be made if the Hornets are going to knock off the top teams in the BSC.

Kudos to Magleby for stepping in for an injured Safron and getting at TD on a key drive late in the game. Depending on the severity of Safron’s injury, we might see him again next week and I think it’s safe to say there won’t be much of a drop off (if any) in talent at the QB spot. The Hornets will need some other players to step up if they want a win in the next couple of weeks.

Defense
The defense got shredded but that was expected. Amazingly enough the Hornet defense did keep EWU out of the endzone on some key drives but couldn’t get stops in key situations. The defense also did a good job of containing the EWU running game and making them a one dimensional team. The problem is the Hornet secondary was no match for the talented EWU receivers.

Game Stats:
  • • Passing Allowed: 342 yds (13.2 ypc), 0 TD’s
    • Rushing Allowed: 112 yds (3.1 ypr), 3 TD’s
    • Total Offense Allowed: 454 yds, 3 TD’s, 3 FG’s
    • Opponent Tim of Possession: 33:54
    • Turnovers Forced: 1 (1 INT, 0 Fum)
    • Opponents Penalties: 8 for 70 yds
    • (#1) Odiase: 11 tackles
    • (#6) McMahon: 9 tackles, 1 TFL, 0.5 sacks
    • (#91) Davis: 8 tackles, 1.5 TFL’s, 1 sack
    • (#31) Williams: 7 tackles , 1 INT
    • (#7/#14) Armstrong: 7 tackles
    • (#48) Fernandez: 6 tackles, 1.5 TFL’s, 0.5 sacks
    • (#62) Lawrence: 6 tackles, 0.5 TFL’s
    • (#11) Badger: 5 tackles, 1 BU
    • (#97) Castro: 5 tackles, 1 TFL
    • (#92)Kelly: 4 tackles, 0.5 TFL’s
    • (#29) Beale: 4 tackles
    • (#90) Cowger/ (#94) Eskew: 3 tackles
    • (#34) Totty: 2 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack
    • (#20) Payne/ (#40) Kikau: 1 tackle
The Hornets hung tough but just couldn’t do enough to stop EWU’s offense. There were instances where tackling was an issue. The Hornets struggled to stop EWU on some key 3rd downs and I pin a lot of that on poor play calling. Most notable was a 3rd a long and Parker only rushed 3 and dropped 8 into a prevent defense. Padron ended up scrambling for a huge gain and the drive ended with a EWU TD that ultimately was the game winner. There was no way dropping back into coverage was going to be successful against this EWU offense and Parker should have known better.

Special Teams
The special teams didn’t have an outstanding night and the kickers had a tough time dealing with the wind. The Hornets gave up a long return but didn’t make any mistakes. One EWU punt was blocked that set up the offense with excellent field position.

Game Stats:
  • • (#58) Castaneda: 0/0 FG’s, 4/4 PAT’s, 3 kickoffs for 58.7 ypk avg. 0 TB
    • (#53) Cornish: 2 kickoffs for 55.5 ypk avg.
    • (#45) Weldon: 5 punts for a 38.8 ypp avg., 0 I-20
    • (#24) McCowan: 1 kr for 11 yds
    • Kick Coverage: Allowed 95 yds on 5 returns (19.0 ypr)
    • Punt Coverage: Allowed 0 yds on 1 returns (0.0 ypr)
The Hornet special teams held their own and didn’t give up any game changing plays. Norrise did make a crucial mistake in letting the last EWU punt bounce. Had he been in place to make a fair catch the Hornets would have had about 10 more seconds and maybe 15 more yards of field position which would have been huge for the final drive.

Injuries
More Hornets went down with injury. Most notable was Safron and Norrise. I heard the announcers say that Weaver went out as well. Hopefully these guys can get healthy and return before the year is out. The late bye week is looking like a Godsend right now.

The Hornets won’t catch a break as an undefeated and ranked Cal Poly heads to Hornet Stadium this week. Fortunately for the secondary CP is very run heavy so they won’t get torched anywhere near as bad as they did this week. The Hornets played well and hung in there with the best of the FCS. Unfortunately the outcome wasn’t in the Hornets favor, now they have to regroup, refocus and keep battling against another tough opponent.

Go Hornets!

Even though the outcome wasn't quite what you guys wanted, I'm sure you all can enjoy the ridiculousness and awesomeness that was this play.

That’s just filthy. :o I missed that play as I tuned in midway through the 2nd qtr. Good luck the rest of the way, we’ll be sure to soften CP up for you guys. ;)

I was in the endzone he threw it into, so I didn't have a great angle on how impressive that scrambling and sack avoiding was, or how far back he went. Saw the throw/catch pretty well though. And yes, please do soften up CP for us. It may be nonconference, but CP will be the difference between a top seed and possible no seed for us. Much like 2010, we'll need to stay at home until the NC if we want to last... we do just enough to get by. Good luck Hornets!
