10 Thoughts on our game vs the Oregon Ducks

10 Thoughts on this game.

First, our staff knows EVERYTHING there is to know about Vernon Adams weaknesses. I'd say that gives us an edge. He is a talented player but he is facing a staff that knows him inside and out. That could cause he and the Ducks problems. You might say it could make them "lame ducks"

Second, over the years I have seen this type situation before where a star player transfers and then the team he goes to plays the team he left. Always the team he left is a large underdog, but more times than what you may expect the underdog finds a way to pull off the upset on emotion, grit, and hard work. Nobody expects us to win, other than EaGLE NATION who seems divided. We have nothing to lose and can go out there with no pressure and a little chip on our shoulder. If this game is close at halftime, I predict we upset them.

Third, we couldn't be playing Oregon at a better time. VA will just get better each week (if he can stay healthy) and they will have a very limited playbook week 1. Less to defend should help us if the game is close at halftime because in the second half we should have a great idea what we will see if VA is at QB (remember, small playbook means by the second half we should have a great idea how they are going to attack us).

Fourth, I've read more than a few times that we "won't be able to run on Oregon"... I say that is complete BS. This OL with 2 All Americans and and our RB's, in particular Wilson can run the football on anybody. While I expect West to play well and make some solid throws I expect our rushing attack to be the strength of our offense this year. Yes we will pass alot and it will set up our run, but when we run, we will be BETTER than last year at running the football.
* note: I've coached two players on that Oregon roster and both are linemen. Neither would start over our OL or over our DT's. That is a fact! I mention this because I expect to win the battle at the line of scrimmage. If we don't, then we will lose big, but truthfully there is no reason we shouldn't beat them on the line of scrimmage. If we do that, This game could be like the Washington Huskies game of 2014. A shootout.

Fifth: We have the best player on the field: Cooper Kupp. For this game, on this day, he is the biggest playmaker on the field, they will do all kinds of things to take him away from us, but I suspect our fantastic coaching staff as well as CK's refusal to lose will potentially break things wide open for us. I'm excited for Kupp this game because I think it's Sept. 5th that he gains a national audience making huge plays to beat the ducks, there I said it.

6th: Our defense needs 3 legitimate stops on the ducks to give us a chance. A fumble recovery, an INT, or a 4th down stop. We get any combo of those 3 and we will have a chance against the Ducks.

7th: I'd take our coaching staff over the Ducks coaching staff any day of the week. Our guys are just better and that is a fact. :notworthy: They will come in to the game with a great plan of attack, and if the boys buy in as they usually do and don't get caught up in the duck hype, we have a chance.

8th: We have a suddenly awesome kicking game. It could prove to be a dangerous weapon because we can score more and longer on FG's and control the field with our punts. It should favor us week 1.

9th: I know everyone right now is riding the "Duck Wave", but I have to tell you that I think they are about to decline a bit over the next few seasons. I know several of the kids they have recruited and I'm not nearly as impressed with the ones that I know that they landed as I have been in the past. I'm not saying they won't be good, but I am saying I see them stepping backward some over the next 4 seasons.

10: Karma (if you don't understand how the Ducks may have some bad karma coming their way this season, then I can't help you).

I agree with you G-Pound. I have heard several analysts say OU could take a step back this year. Cooper is the best player on the field. End of story. OU's db's will be able to run with him, but he will win with his strength. Their db's can't match his strength and they certainly don't have the heart that kid has either. I know he will play inspired. When they try to double him we need to cram Simba down their throat. Bourne and Hill will also do their thing and I suspect Sblendorio will make some timely catches. Grady could be the WILD CARD with his size. If he decides to break out....watch out. I think Simba might be the one guy we have that might be able to run away from OU's team speed. Also, agree with what you said about our coaching. Eags aren't going to lay down for anyone! It's going to be a very tough game, but Game on!!!

Nice write up, all good points. This will be the best team EWU has faced and unlike the past PAC-12 teams we have played, our lowest chance of an upset. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean I don't think it cant happen. All it takes is the Oregon coaches and players to not take us seriously and over look us for MSU and a couple of turnovers in our favor to make it interesting. We've seen how not taking us seriously has worked our in the past, just ask Sarkisian, Leech, Riley, and Peterson.

This is the homer vs. the realist debate in my head but I do think we put up a good fight and make it respectable. No matter what, I'll be there Saturday making some noise, cheering on the boys win or lose and I know they'll make us proud.

I can totally see Webb breaking a bubble screen or reverse or deep route for a big gainer. He is going to do some amazing things this year. I think Cooper is going to have an unbelievable year. He has worked tremendously hard and his game is near perfect.

Good stuff. If the game is within 10 at halftime I'd take us in an upset. We just have to keep things close early and figure out we can play with them.
* My personal hope is for a VA pass to go pick 6 by Range & company early in the matchup!

G&P

Very few people will have any expectation of us to win. But I think the players and coaches both believe they can win. This team has a culture that never gives up, that always believes, and always fights. So many games have taken place that other teams would have given up in, but the Eagles not only pulled out some of those victories, but on the losses, they were in those games to the end. Fighting back through the adversity of being down 35-0 to SHSU in the playoffs, or down 21-0 to U-Dub last year showed the heart that exists from the coaching staff down to the players.

Statistically, our chances are slim. Most people in Vegas wouldn't bet on us. I certainly wouldn't guarantee a win. But I do think our team can, and they will try. And they will try till the end. We have great playmakers throughout the team that can have gamechanging moments. I am excited to see what is going to happen on Sept. 5!

How does EWU stop Oregon from running the ball?

Agree, we can run the ball. Wildcard might be the TE's on keeping the sticks moving with big blocks and catches. The big play can come over the top as Oregon presses the coverage. The good news is EWU has about any type of offense you could ask for; let's call it the "kitchen sink" offense and see how Oregon schemes for it. There will be some mismatches if West can take advantage. This game is like climbing the north face of the Eiger.

Good luck with winning the LOS lol.

Pay attention dammit! Kupp has more heart than your entire secondary (whom I've never actually met and I'm sure are swell guys, just not as much heart)! And has anyone mentioned our moxie yet? Wait till you see our moxie! It's through the roof moxie! Off the charts moxie!

In all seriousness, our O-line should be able to have some success. They're experienced and decent sized. They'll obviously have their hands full with the speed, and will need to keep West upright for us to have a shot.

The Dline is what concerns me. It's been a weakness and it's young. We platooned 6 or so underclassmen most of last season so they have some experience, but they're still young. Hopefully the summer has burned away the baby fat and they're a bit bigger and stronger. We will need to get a few stops if we're going to keep up. That or turn you guys over a ridiculous amount.

The other thing that intrigues me is the VA familiarity. He knows our tendencies and will try to exploit that. Then again I'm sure we're throwing a few wrinkles in too and we also know his tendencies and tells.

Maybe someday you can win a National Championship too. :thumb:

I sure hope Ground and Pound is right, but the simple fact is Eastern has never had success against a spread option team that emphasizes running the football. That's been the gameplan to beat Eastern for the last few years; spread us out and run all over us. Even teams with mediocre offenses--- see UW last year--- just beat us all over the field.

I don't have too high of expectations for this game. Ideally, I'd like to see the game stay competitive throughout and show that #1-- we can be forceful up front on offense, #2--- West or someone can effectively move the football, #3--- our defense can at least get a few stops against Oregon's top guys. If we can do those those things, I'll call it a good game.

If our defense comes out looking like they did last year with no penetration up front and no one touching a ball carrier until they're 6 yards past the line of scrimmage... ouch. Also, we've got too see some signs that the offense hasn't taken a big step back without Vernon. I think the solid OL should be a massive help here, so seeing if they can play well against a top FBS team will tell us a lot.

I'll add one other thing... we need to see the defense drop a ball carrier on first contact. And, as Oregon inevitably does, when they get a man free going downfield, we've got to be able to get a man in pursuit that can make plays and clean up the mess. Sometimes giving up a 30 yard gain ultimately saves points that can win you a game instead of seeing the ball carrier accelerate unimpeded to the endzone.

I do appreciate the Bernese Alps reference. I spent some time in Muerren once. Great view of the Eiger from there.

This pretty much sums up what I've been thinking. I'm really not using this game as much of a gauge for how good we'll be this year at all. I think our strong point on offense might be our running game, but ironically I think that may also be the area we struggle in the most against Oregon.

The only real chance you have against teams like this is to spread them out and attack vertically. Nothing against West, but I don't know if our offense is really capable of executing that type of strategy against a defense like Oregon's. That said, I think we'll make some plays and make things a little interesting for a bit. There's just too much talent and fight on this team for anything less.

West definitely has the arm strength to drive the ball downfield and vertically stretch the defense. Remember, he was 3-1 last year and his performance did not lose the NAU game. I think the biggest issue he had last year was timing with the receivers and that game experience that improves making adjustments with the receivers when plays break down. For what it's worth, I have total confidence in West. He has an outstanding OL, the best receiving corps in FCS and RBs that will hopefully stay healthy this season.
