Is Portland State a pretender or a contender? I think this game will truly give some answers. Anyone have some predictions?

I have Portland State winning this game by a large margin. I don't see them shutting down the MSU QB, but they will contain him enough to force defensive stops, because MSU doesn't have enough playmakers on the field other than him. I also see Portland State running wild on the MSU defense; 500 plus yards on the ground. I really think they will control all facets and I don't see this game being close at all. PSU 52, MSU 28.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see it play out like this. I think PSU is solid, and will cut through the soft Bobcat defense with relative ease. MSU does struggle at times, and Prukop tries to take the entire team on his shoulder. He is a hell of a player, but can't do it alone. I think PSU wins this one by at least two scores. MSU was able to control the Cal Poly by going up early and forcing CP into a catch-up situation that conflicts with their identity. PSU can score in multiple ways and and has a decent enough defense they will get back into the game if that happens. I see PSU as one of the three BSC playoff teams this year. Heck, if they win their next six, I'd say they are in the playoff field for sure with their two FBS wins. They are in the best spot of any BSC team right now. I would've never guessed that during the off-season!

Every team in the Big Sky seems to have some ambient, weird result on their record that makes no sense. Montana losing at home to Weber State. Southern Utah getting run off the field by South Dakota State. Montana State losing to NAU... but the weirdest of all is Portland State scoring 13 points and losing at home to North Dakota. This is the same North Dakota team that lost the following week at home to Idaho State (another weird, ambient result). We managed a fightback against Cal Poly and Sac State to avoid our strange blemish.

So who's the real PSU? The team that beats WSU and North Texas on the road? Or the team that stinks it up against North Dakota? My hunch is it's the former, and they're sitting on a potential monster season if they can stay pretty healthy. That said, Jeld-Wen Field is probably the least advantageous home field in the conference, so playing at home doesn't give them a big boost. I'll still take them to beat Montana State, but not by a huge margin.

On a separate but not entirely unrelated topic, I think we all understand that "at some point in time", Beau Baldwin will leave Eastern for more money. It may be next year; it may be 10 years from now. Coach Best would likely be in the pole position to take over as Eastern next HC. But I'd strongly suggest that we'd at least reach out to Bruce Barnum. Eastern has a lot of advantages in terms of university support that PSU can't offer, and Barnum has spent time in Cheney in the past and is familiar with Eagle football.

I think they are a contender and maybe even end up winning the conference, but disagree about them being in the best spot right now. They already have a conference loss at home to North Dakota. SUU and Eastern have no conference losses, yet.

I agree with all that. I read that Barnum played linebacker at Eastern and is a 1987 graduate. Pretty cool.

the past few years I have felt that PSU is not as bad as their record shows. they play a hard, physical brand of football with a rushing attack that always gives us big problems to stop. All of that being said I"m not ready to proclaim them world beaters just yet. I do think they will beat msu on saturday.

I agree about PSU not being as bad as their record showed in the past few seasons. Any time I watched their games, it seemed like they couldn't get their offense and defense to sync up. It always seemed that their offense wouldn't show up at home and their defense wouldn't show up on the road.

I believe one of the reasons they're successful this season is because they have a "us against the world" mentality. After last season, their fans and media were throwing out all sorts of names for coaches, the players wanted Barnum (who has never been a head coach), they looked to have a small and not interesting recruiting class, and they were looking for a new AD. They were pretty much written off for dead.

Not to mention, they play in the worst "home field" in the conference. I'm interested in seeing if they can hang onto success when the spotlight is shown brightly on them. I know Barnum is also coaching for a new deal since his runs until December when the AD has to decide whether to keep him or not.

Pretender.

They still play the best 5 Big Sky teams (excluding themselves) in their last 6 games. I will give respect if they beat MSU but I don't see it happening. Wazzu was a good win, North Texas is worse than Idaho and wouldn't finish in the top half of the Big Sky.

Until they beat a couple good conference opponent i'm not buying into it...

Portland State has generally gotten pretty good athletes. Maybe not as good as our kids or kids at the Montana(s), but kids that are every bit as good or better than the other Big Sky programs.

But their coaching has been an absolute mess since Walsh was there. Glanville was out to lunch and Burton was as disorganized as they come.

Went with PSU this week. Win over a Mike Leach coached team might actually be a negative. /s

This game should be give us the tale of the tape.

Good for him!
Best of luck on recruiting though. I think the program has a uphill battle with sticking around. Winning helps though.

I will go with mef5 on this one but everyone else had valid points. PSU looks like they are a good team on both sides of the ball. MSUs defense has been up and down this season and in the bottom of the BSC. Lots of young players and one said playing against EWU was an eye opener because of the speed of the players. Hopefully we continue to see improvement. Good luck to EWU on the next game.

Read and article that UofO didn't recruit a single player from Oregon, seems like they(PSU) have a shot at picking up some quality kids if they finish this season strong.

I noticed at the Oregon game this year when they were doing starting line-ups for the ducks that only 2 out of the starting 22 players for the ducks are from within the state. Fine by me as long as EWU can continue to scoop up some good ones like we've done in the past.

We also have a lot of Oregon players on our roster.
