17-18 Priorities

Time after time this year Senglin has bailed the team out of long and multiple scoring droughts. No one else seem to have the ability to do that. He has put the team on his back on many occasions and carried them to victory when they would have lost otherwise. We are going to miss Senglin big time. I just hope that Tal is right that someone else will develop and emerge to take on that role next year.

Ktown, I personally would choose to keep Cannon over John, and I think Rahe would do the same. We have plenty of guys who can play the 2 guard to replace John. Take your pick from Richardson, Baker, Court, Ari-Turner or Harding. But we don't have an excess of points, only Doc Nelson other than Cannon. So I don't think Cannon is going anywhere.

If it were up to me I would drop John. He is a poor shooter, a marginal ball handler, average speed. He does have good "to the basket" skills but suffers a bit in this area from the Gittens syndrome; operating a bit too much out of control!

I would definitely let Dallas go. He has a bit of skill but far too laid back attitude. I doubt that he is a hard worker since he hasn't improved his body in two years at Weber. Not sure how to teach aggressiveness and he definitely could use some. He's gotta go. If he doesn't go this year I would be willing to place some money on the fact that he will not survive getting cut next year.

Good points baller.... I think Rahe isn't too high on either of the pg's right now and will most likely give one of them a shot to win the job and if Doc is the real deal one of them will be on an extremely short leash for the 1st half of the season. If they don't play well and Doc looks promising the job will be his. I do agree with your analysis Harding might be most valuable at PG. I don't see it happening though.
Do you think Baker could see some time at 3 next year?

If Court turns out to be the player that others here seem to think he is, he will probably be our wing (3). Especially if he has grown to 6'6" as others here stated that he had. But I think Baker will get the start there to begin the season and will play a lot at that position whether he starts the whole season or not. Court will not start early, but could possibly start later (like Lillard & Harding) in the season.

My feeling are that the competition to start at the wing positions will be intense. I see it coming down to Ryan, Riley, Jerrick, and Trevon to start at both positions. The problem that Dusty has is staying in front of the wings we play against on the defensive end of the floor. He has most everything else. Dusty would be a really good 4 man if he were 4 inches taller and 60lbs heavier. Dusty can help us, but in limited situations. His PT could be even less next year than it was this year.

The competition at the PG position will also be quite interesting. On the surface, the competition for the post positions seems fairly set, but you never know until they get here and start going at it.

I don't think that next years team will be anything like this years, Other than playing with the same ball and on the same court.

Baller, yes, JS has bailed out the team many times, but when every offense set goes through one man, then I hope to hell that guy can score. On the flip side, there have been a number of times when he hasn't helped the team, but hurt the team instead. And, personally, I think the development of our other guards has been hurt by the one-man team approach. Yes, I am very glad that JS came to Weber State. He has proved his worth and broken a whole slue of records. However, with him graduated, I feel that our other guards will have a chance to develop more and that the team will have greater balance. There has been waaay too much dependence on JS and that has left our team somewhat one-dimensional (winning 19 games is still really impressive).

Next year, though, this dependence on one guy this season, has hurt our players confidence for next year. How they rebound will say a lot about their character, ability, and development. I don't know if John will be able to recover from the confidence blow of losing his starting role and playing limited mins this late in the season. Cannon has had the entire season to work through his issues and to understand his role. He has been playing well as of late. John, hasn't had that luxury and last week wasn't a great indication of him getting back on the right side of coach. This happened to another Wildcat great...Scotty B was left home from a post season game due to attitude. He only came back from that to become one of our best players all time. So, I think Cody can still come back and prove his worth. Who knows. I just don't think it would be wise of Randy to dump him now or to dump Cannon/Dallas. It is soooooo hard to get good Spring guys at the end of March. Randy might have a transfer lineup or a 5th year guy. I don't know. But, if so, he doesn't have a 13 spot unless someone leaves. Maybe someone will chose to transfer, Randy might be banking on that.

The one thing that I am sure of, Tal, is that there is no way 8 guards are going to play next year. I'm fairly sure that 5 guards will play quite a bit and that a 6th guy will play a little. That leaves two guys who will never see the floor. One of them could be a red shirt, but one guy would simply ride the pine and help out at practice. Whoever that guy is projected to be, they may not like their new role on the team if they are an upperclassman. In the next few weeks each player will be evaluated and will have a heart to heart with the coach. I don't know what will happen, but I can guess that there could be a veteran player who would not be happy with their projected role. There could also be a player who is simply ready to graduate and get on with their career outside of BB.

As far as the big men go, I can see 4 guys getting regular playing time and a fifth rarely playing. A sixth big man could red shirt. For now, we have 5 big men slated to be on the roster next year. Stavrev is not able to get medically cleared to play, probably ever, and Darling will transfer, probably to a JC.

I have no knowledge of any other players wanting to be Wildcats next year, but it could happen. You never know. One thing I do know, our team will not be the same next year. :coffee:

There is one thing I believe about next year for sure...

We need a freshman point guard and a freshman big to come thru in a big way if we are going to have a chance of winning the conference. Lets hope that Nelson and Kozak are ready to make a difference. It would be a real bonus if Ari-Turner or Riley Court could also come thru.

Perfectly stated. My hope for next season is there will be 5 times the inside game there was this year which would make much of this talk and worry more of a moot issue. Team ball > JS ball.

Personally, I think if we can get one or two of the incoming freshman to red shirt that will be to our advantage in the future. I think right now that Vialen is the clear favorite to be red shirted. Other than him, it'll come down to either Doc, Turner, or Court. Depends on how much our current guys develop over the summer and improve and also, what we will need the most.

A few glaring weaknesses that I feel need to be addressed and have been mentioned numerous times on this post are
1. Rebounding- At times we had 3 players on the floor undersized or disinterested in rebounding.
2. Point guard- we need someone at the point to take that position and not look back. I'm not sure who that person will be. My gut tells me Cannon or John initially but they will be on a short leash.
3. We need to go 8-9 deep instead of 7. Our guys just flat out wore down.

I'm not concerned about replacing Senglin scoring. When you have a player dominate the ball it's easy to mentally check out offensively. Next year I expect 4 players on the court to be fully engaged instead of watching or running the O and knowing eventually Senglin will shoot.
No question we need Chapman and two ther incoming freshman to have significant contributions.

I also think it good when we can have 2 red shirts. However, I can see the advantage to playing everyone who is ready to play. I don't like having just one red shirt. If you are going to do it, do it with two. Three is too many.

I could see us not red shirting anybody. I could also see us doing it like we did with Darling this year. Suiting them up for every game, but not playing them unless we absolutely had to. I had been an advocate of red shirting Harding this year, but I'm really glad that he played. A star was born. Even if it took half the season for the delivery. It could work that way for some of our incoming freshmen as well. :coffee:

Hopefully Chapman will match Hill in the rebounding department, and Braxton will continue to improve in that area. But our real problem rebounding this year was not from our post players. Both Hill and Braxton actually did pretty well in comparison with other teams' bigs. Our problem was at the guard position. All too often the rebounding deficit we had was because a guard or two on the other side picked up 6 or 7 boards, while our guards were getting 2 or 3 boards.

Absolutely right. Plus, many of the offensive boards given up were to the other teams guards, as a direct result of our guards not boxing them out.

Winning basketball is all about the number of shot attempts and shooting percentages. If you can't count on getting more scoring opportunities, then you have to outshoot other teams. It makes winning more difficult. Getting more opportunities is all about rebounding and turn overs. Consistently winning the shooting battle is all about playing good D and blocking shots.

This years team was not a good rebounding team, not a good defensive team, and sometimes had trouble taking care of the ball. We had good shooters.

We over achieved in getting to 20 wins. The guys played really hard to get as far as they got.

I'm not worried about scoring at all next year. I want to see improvement in rebounding, defense, and ball handling. It looks like the coaches have addressed these issues in their recruiting. We will see. :coffee:

Spring signing begins next week and runs for a month. We already know about Trevon Ary-Turner planning to sign. We may also find out if we will be getting a transfer or another signee.

Several other teams around the BSC will also be signing new players and we will have a better idea of what they may look like next season. Transferring will also intensify. I think that all of the coaching changes have already happened, at least for HC positions.
