2007 Attendance Figures

From the NCAA website:

PSU's average attendance for 2007 was 10,062, which is 34th best in all of FCS (129 teams).

Some other notable schools:

1. Appy St. 25,269 (2006 National Champs)
2. Montana 22,800
14. Montana St 14,245
47. Sac St. 7,899
61. Idaho St. 6,820
75. EWU 5,356

Considering a 3-8 overall record, I think 10k average attendance as pretty good. If we would've had a 8-3 record, we would've probably been closer to 12-14k, which is what could be expected for next year. While the record doesn't show it, PSU plays some very exciting football, and I think that will show in our attendance in the next few years.

Considering PSU's record, the attendance was good. If Glanville and Mouse can get this going (winning games) I could even see crowds in the 15,000 to 20,000 range. Imagine what the Montana game numbers will be, especially if the Viks are winning. I remember attending a game during the Pokey Allen era and there was over 20,000 people. This program needs to get back to that level.

in an ideal world with the population size of the state of oregon, what could we really sustain for attendance if all three teams were experiencing success? Or what if we were able to move up to a better conference, are their enough people in the state to be able to compete in the attendance world with some of these already successful schools because we all know that attendance means funding?

I believe there are three rules for increased attendance: (1) offense sells tickets; and (2) winning brings fans who want to associate with a winning team, whether that fan is a student, alumni, or resident of Portland. There was the promise of both this year. That didn't pan out, but, I believe, if the Vikings can score points and win more than they lose, the attendance will continue to increase. Fans want to associate with a winner. That brings me to the last reason why attendance can increase: (3) championships. Scoring points gives you a chance to win, but championships are won with defense. If you want a full house, we must be able to say "Big Sky Conference Champion Portland State Vikings." We must improve the defense. Come on Jerry, put a dominant defense on the field we can all be proud of.

When I was looking at this before the season, I mentioned 10,000 as kind of the minimum for what PSU NEEDS to justify the hire of JG. This is painstakingly close for me... and a 3-8 record, being realistic, doesn't lead to a lot of renewals in a metropolis that's showing to be fickle.

On the other side of the coin, if the luxury suites remain full, that's saying something. That helps loads.

How can things look bright. We lost 25 talented seniors and need to rebuild. EWU had a bunch of young players last year when we shut them out. Those same kids got better and did well very this year. We lose most of our core, all our experienced linemen, and have to rebuild with new players that have to re-learn "The System". I am flat out scared how bad it could get next year. Any realist would be.

I would say the heat is on Jerry's Kids. PSU was a strong program, well thought of, etc. This "rebuilding" act will get old. College Football = Winning. Period.

I think there is always a chance that the team could be bad next year. On the other hand, I think that there were a lot of things that couldn't get any worse. I think that the team less year will probably have less individual talent, but win more games.
