2008 Big Sky Champs!!!

FYI, PSU is offering a chance for those who are purchasing regular tickets to sponsor students at $20/seat. I would encourage those of you who can to do so by going to www.goviks.com and calling them about it. Although I can afford and am more than willing to pay $20 for the games as a grad student, I think more will come if its free.

GO VIKS!

While I think this is a very good idea, it would be even better if they had student tickets or gave away free admission tickets to students for the PSU games. How can one expect more student commitment in the future when students have to pay big $$$ to see their own team playing in their own town?

I know it's not PSU's fault; it's probably Rose Garden charging the hell out of them. Which is why...

...we need our own arena.

...and for this tourney, we should ask Paul Allen to donate 1000 tickets and give them to PSU students for free.

Actually for the conference tournament they have to pay both NCAA and Big Sky conference fees. Student tickets are usually free but even on campus last year we had to pay $8 to attend the quarterfinal game. Even at the D3 level, where I did my undergrad work, my college hosted our conference tourney twice when I was there and since all tickets to on-campus events were free for everyone, they basically had to write a check to the NCAA and our conference to cover the revenue they were supposed to earn.

Yep, having a new on-campus arena would prevent alot of hassle and bring in additional revenue for situations like this.

Just got my tickets. Whew. I did the pre-sale deal, but I guess the Rose Garden just got the tickets to the PSU ticket office two days ago. Said that the PSU ticket office sold about 1k in pre-sale tickets. I wonder how sales thru Comcast tix and the Rose Quarter are going...

First Seven Hundred Student Tickets Free Each Night Of The Big Sky Tournament
Written by: Portland State Athletics
Release: 03/07/2008

The first 700 Portland State students, showing valid identification at the door, will be admitted free on each night of the 2008 Intel Big Sky Conference Basketball Championship at The Rose Garden. The free admission is courtesy of donations by Peter Stott, Tom Fink, and the PSU student fees committee. Regular student admission at the door will be $12 each after the first 700 are given away each night.

Portland State, the Big Sky Conference regular season champion, is hosting the tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday, Mar. 11-12. Semifinal games take place on Tuesday with Northern Arizona facing an opponent to be determined at 5:30. The Vikings will play at 8 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. The Big Sky Conference Championship takes place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

From GrizPawBlog:

Clearly, some teams in the conference have been able to beat Portland State, and the Griz gave them a tussle in Portland. But then came last week when the Vikings rampaged through the state like a horde of, well, Vikings.

A 108-56 victory over the Griz certainly seemed to indicate things are going well, but you also have to point your finger at Montana. For that to happen indicates you have some pretty serious flaws that either aren’t being addressed - or can’t be addressed. Sometimes, you just don’t have the bullets, no matter how well the gun is aimed.

But to lose by 52? At your own place? In conference? Something isn’t right … or at least it seems that way. We’ll see. Maybe the Griz can turn things around. But somehow they have to do better on offense. There are long stretches where they seem to have no rhythm at all.

As for Portland State. They ARE good. Very good. Last Saturday night was the best slice-and-dice exhibition I’ve ever seen on a basketball court. Granted, everything they put up seemed to go in, but it wasn’t like they weren’t creating and then taking advantage of those open looks. And their defense was outstanding. There were times UM shooters might as well have turned their backs to basket and just hucked it up.

Unless PSU falls on its face in the Big Sky tourney, it will be very interesting to see what kind of respect the conference gets in the NCAAs, and what kind of matchup the Vikings get. They’re a legitimate threat to win at least one game, I think. We can give Montana credit for that. Their NCAA performances under Krysco hopefully opened some eyes, and might lead to a better seeding for a team like Portland State this year.

It will be fun to watch.
