Defense

To state that the defense struggled for the majority of the season would be an understatement. They had some terrible games. The Hornet defense struggled against the top offenses in the Big Sky and sometimes looked completely unprepared. It wasn’t all bad though. The defense did have an outstanding game in the upset of then 23rd ranked NAU as well as a dominating performance at PSU. The standout players were DT Christian Clark and SS Zach Schrader.

I felt that the defensive line had to be the anchor of this defense. There were a lot of question marks surrounding this defense, and with the players that were returning at defensive line, they would have to have dominating performances to have an effective defensive unit. I thought the DL played well at times, and didn’t in others. DT Clark was able to accumulate 10 sacks and DT Bill Sherman proved to be a presence as well. The defensive line was asked to pick up the slack for an inexperienced group of linebackers and they played well and lived up to the challenge. The problem was that the Hornets faced many high powered offenses and they didn’t play too well against them. Clark had an exceptional season and was concluded with being snubbed come time for the All Big Sky Team selections.

The linebacking corps had a huge void to fill entering the season with the loss of Cyrus Mulitalo and Mike Brannon. The lack of experienced players at the linebacker position was evident at the start of the season. The linebackers improved as the season progressed, however there is still plenty of room for improvement. I would have to say that LB Peter Buck stood out the most as he was moved from SS to LB this season. His play improved as the season progressed and he should have a major role and impact for 2010. The linebackers struggled to stop the run against teams with capable running attacks. Also I saw many missed tackles by the LB’s. This was very frustrating as missed tackles by the LB’s tend to lead to big plays by the opposing offense. Jarred Pereira went down midway through the season and the 3 star recruits’ impact was minimized. I do believe that the LB’s will improve dramatically from the 2009 season and make some plays next season. The LB’s will need to be more effective when they blitz. There were many times this season where one or two LB’s would blitz and fail to put pressure on the QB. This will need to change come next season.

The secondary also played many young players this season as well. SS Schrader was added to the team when Western Washington’s football program folded and he had an immediate impact. How he didn’t land an FCS scholarship out of high school is beyond me. Schrader was the leading tackler for the Hornets. As good as that is for him, it’s terrible for the Hornets. The strong safety shouldn’t be the leading tackler on a defense. This means that the LB’s aren’t shedding blockers and getting to the ball or they are just flat out missing their assignments. Regardless, it’s good to know that the sure tackler Schrader is there to make a play. Deionte Gordon was moved from CB to FS heading into the season and it took some time for him to adjust. I thought he adjusted quite well as the season progressed and will continue to improve as he gains experience. As far as the CB go, they were either hit or miss. It is hard for me to come down hard on them as I don’t believe the play calling was conducted in such a way to play into their strengths. The CB’s, and all the DB’s for that matter, were constantly dropping back into a zone and playing on their heels. This led to constant success by opponents with a capable QB and WR’s. The CB’s did make some plays this season and there were bright spots. Most notable was the ISU game where the secondary had two pick six’s. The secondary also had solid games in the NAU upset as well as the PSU game.

Fortunately the defense will have a lot of key players returning for the 2010 campaign. Virtually all the LB’s return as well as 3 of the 4 starters in the secondary. I would like to see the LB’s step up, be more aggressive and make some plays in 2010. I feel like the LB’s on the roster have the capability to do this. The DL will return 2 starters and will have a few starting spots up for grabs. I want to see a dramatic improvement in play calling. This is something I will discuss further at the conclusion of my defensive recap.

Players Leaving

  • • DT Bill Sherman will be lost to graduation. The 285 pound tackle proved to be a force and he will be missed. Sherman started all 11 games this season and 22 in his career.
    • DE Kevin Moore will be lost to graduation. The 235 pound end started all 11 games this season and 22 in his career.
    • CB Durrell Oliver will be lost to graduation. Oliver started 10 games in his career, all of which came this season. He played in all 11 games and made some impressive plays this season, most notable was a 37 yard pick six in the ISU game.
    • DE Ryan Shinar will be lost to graduation. The 250 pound end saw a lot of playing time and proved to be a capable replacement when the starters needed a rest. Shinar started 1 game this season and it was the only start in his career. He played in 9 games this season.
    • SS Dorian Brown will be lost to graduation. Brown started 2 games this season and 3 in his career. He saw action in all 11 games this season.
    • LB Carlo Trinchero will be lost to graduation. He had an off the field altercation in the offseason that had him kicked off the team at one point. He didn’t see any playing time this season.

Players Returning

  • • DT Christian Clark will return for his senior season. The 260 tackle started all 11 games this season and 22 in his career. I want to see him make a push for the Big Sky sack record of 19 sacks in a season.
    • SS Zach Schrader will return for his senior season. The SS started all 11 games this season and was named to Nig Sky Newcomer of the Year. This guy is a stud and I expect him to continue making plays and having a major impact next season.
    • FS Deionte Gordon will return for his junior season. Gordon started all 11 games this year and has a knack for getting to the ball.
    • DE Zach Nash will return for his junior season. The 245 pound end started 9 games this season and 20 in his career. Clark will see a lot of double teams this season so I would like to see Nash step up and have an impact.
    • LB Peter Buck will return for his senior season. The 220 pound outside linebacker started 8 games this season and 21 in his career. Buck played in all 11 games this season.
    • LB Jared Pereira started 4 games this season before being sidelined by injury. I expect the three star recruit to have a solid season next year and I want to see him have an impact. He played in 6 games this season.
    • LB Geoff Warner will return for his senior season. The 220 pound MLB started 8 games this season and played in all 11. He took over the starting MLB spot when Pereira went down with an injury.
    • LB Greg Johnson will return for his junior season. The 180 pound OLB started 9 games this season and played in 10.
    • CB Marquese Smith will return for his senior season. Smith started 9 games and played in all 11 this season.
    • CB Jeff Johnson will return for his sophomore season. Johnson started 2 games and played in 8 this season.
    • CB Jay Riddic returns for his senior season. Riddic played in 6 games this season.
    • DB Dana Willis will return for his senior season. Willis played in all 11 games this season. There is one CB starting position open and I think it will come down to Riddic, Johnson, or Willis landing it. However all 3 players will see considerable playing time in the pass happy BSC.
    • LB David Coleman will return for his junior season. The 210 pound OLB started 1 game this season and 3 in his career. He played in all 11 games.
    • LB Avery White will return for his sophomore season. The 240 pound OLB started 4 games this season and played in 9.
    • LB Jeff Badger will return for his sophomore season. The 215 pound LB played in all 11 games and saw action at RB when they were running out of bodies to carry the ball.
    • DL Salesi Maumau will return for his senior season. The 250 pound DL played in 9 games this season.
    • DL Maika Maumau will return for his junior season. The 295 pound DL played in 4 games this season.
    • Defensive linemen Reese Heaslet (245 pounds), Matt Lawrence (270 pounds), and Alesana Laban (280 pounds) return for their sophomore season next year. They each played in 9, 8 and 8 games, respectively.
    • DL Matt Agaiava will return for his senior season. The 270 pound DL didn’t play in any games this season, I would have to assume that he redshirted.
    • LB Cody Allen will return for his sophomore season. The 220 pound LB played in 1 game this season.
    • LB Scott Magnuson will return next season. The 210 pound LB didn’t play in any games and I believe he redshirted. He was a freshman coming into this season.
    • LB Chris Briasco will return next season. The JUCO transfer is listed on the roster as injured.
    • DB Randy Fesser and Nate Jones will return for their senior season. Fesser played in 5 games and Jones played in 3 games this season.
    • DB Damone Jackson will return for his junior season. He didn’t play in any games this season so he may have redshirted.
    • Defensive backs Robert Beale, Johnny Feaster, Marquese Jones, Osagie Odiase, and Corey Vanderbeek are all coming off of their freshman season and will return this season. I am not sure who redshirted but it would be nice to see some of these underclassmen get some experience. Feaster, Jones and Odiase each saw action in 1 game this season.
    • Defensive linemen Jake Salter (260 pounds), James Lopez (225 pounds), KeiVaughn Barrett (285 pounds), and Brian McKeon (250 pounds) came into the season as freshman. I am not sure which ones were redshirted, but Salter and McKeon played in 1 game this season.

The defense has plenty of room to improve. The positives are there are 8 starters returning as well as a lot of depth returning. Having players available to fill in won’t be an issue. It will come down to players making plays and having an impact to improve the overall play of the defense. There is no doubt DT Clark will receive a lot of attention this season so other players will need to step up to get pressure on the QB. After looking at the numbers, it looks like there are players who have the potential to make some plays and provide the impact needed to take this defense to another level of play.

Now as far as play calling is concerned, something needs to change. The play calling this season was just down right awful most of the time. From the CB’s playing 10 yards off the ball in 3rd and < 8 situations to a failure to make adjustments in coverage and blitz packages during a game; it was pretty terrible. The defense got shredded in a lot of games and very few in game adjustments were made. There needs to be some major changes in the way the defensive coaches approach a game. I understand that there were some prolific offenses in the Big Sky that the Hornets struggled against, but to watch a game and see little to no change in the defensive play calling as an offense picked apart the defense is unacceptable. With that said, I would like to see some bump and run coverage on the outside and some creative blitz schemes by the LB’s. Maybe try that double barrel blitz that is popular in the NFL right now. (The MLB and OLB both blitz the A gap and cross paths to confuse the blocking assignments) I want to see this defense be aggressive in all that they do and not have the play calling make is seem like the defense is on its heels for the majority of a game. This defense needs to find a new swagger as the reactive type of play calling was a complete failure this season. Basically, I want to see an end to the pussified “sit back and hope they drop it” zone defense that was called for the majority of the season. I think with many players returning with experience, the defense will have a lot of capability to try some creative blitzing and coverage schemes. With a ball hawker like Gordon playing FS, man coverage by the CB’s will have over the top help. I just want to see this defense improve and play to a level that will give this team a chance to win.

As always my posts are up for discussion. I hope you all enjoyed the 2009 Recap series that I cranked out. I am sure I have overlooked some things but the quality should improve as I continue to post these types of write-ups. I also noticed that some players are listed on the NCAA stat sheets but not on the roster posed on Hornetsports. Anyway, you get what you pay for. Merry Christmas!

GO HORNETS!

I agree, defense was anything but dominant.

BSC is offense happy, but if you look at the clubs who are successful every year, they all play better than average defense.

SDH

Loved all four of your recaps. Thank you for your opinion, passion and the time you put into each post. 2010 looks very promising with the returning talent and the new commits. If the coaches can make the adjustments needed to improve the several weak areas described in your posts and step up with more aggressive and creative play calling that takes advantage of the team's talent rather than the conservative play calling we saw for large chunks of games this year, the Hornets will finish in the top of the Big Sky Conference in 2010. We will have the talent.

Go Hornets
