Nassau, Bahamas - The Portland State men's basketball team opened a week-long tour of the Bahamas with an 80-40 win over the Cybots Club team.

The Vikings are playing three games in the Bahamas in an NCAA-sanctioned preseason trip.

PSU was led by the 17 points of sophomore Chris Harriel. Newcomers Chehales Tapscott and Charles Odum each had 11 points for the Vikings. Tapscott and senior Phil Nelson each grabbed eight rebounds.

Redshirt junior Nate Lozeau added nine points and six rebounds for the Vikings.

Portland State is taking advantage of an NCAA rule that allows teams to make one out-of-season trip every four years. Second-year Head Coach Tyler Geving looks forward to the integration of new players to his team and the team-building experience.

The Vikings play again on Sunday against the Commonwealth Giants and then Monday against the Bahama All-Stars.

Senior forward Phil Nelson led the way with 26 points. Junior transfer Charles Odum had 15 points.

Chris Harriel played his second strong game on the trip, scoring 14 points with seven rebounds. Melvin Jones added 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

A pair of newcomers were productive as well. Junior Nate Lozeau had 12 points and nine rebounds, while junior Chehales Tapscott scored 10 points with six rebounds.

The Vikings will face the Bahamas All-Stars on Monday night.

Should be an interesting year.

I think we'll be one of the more talented programs in the Big Sky, but I also think that this season will tell us a lot about coach Geving. The wheels really came off of the wagon last year in February, and it was nice to see him get this team to Ogden for the BSC tournament.

This season has even more pressure with the postseason ban. Getting the team back on track after a couple of losses in a row with basically nothing on the line except for pride could prove to be a challenge.
