Will the upcoming season be our last chance to beat UM?

If you ask most um people on egriz and csd, they'll tell you that its already a done deal and that montana will be competing in the WAC starting in 2011. But who really knows. I think the whole "FCS is going away" argument that a lot of Griz fans use to justify their need to move to FBS is mostly trumped-up BS. I don't see why conference realignment in FBS means the death of FCS. I do believe, however, that they will end up making the move at some point. I'm just not totally convinced that they are in the best position financially to add the requisite sports/scholarships that they would need to make the jump *right now*. I'm also not sure that the majority of their boosters support such a move at the moment. Of course, I'm not a Montana fan either, so I could be totally wrong.

It's my understanding that the moratorium preventing schools from moving up doesn't expire until sometime in 2011. Because of scheduling, I doubt anyone will change leagues until the 2012 football season at the earliest. If UM were to be invited (and then accept that invitation) to join the WAC, it would add an additional conference game to the schedule and that could cause some problems for schools that have their schedules set up a couple of years in advance. We'll see.

I'm one who thinks there will be a major restructuring of college athletics. It would not surprise me to see four super conferences with 14 to 16 teams each that controls all the major bowl games and the big payouts from college football, plus the majority of the money from the NCAA men's basketball tournament. It's getting to be a dog-eat-dog world in athletics and the big dogs think they need more of the pie. The Big Tenleven may hold the key. If they add five schools as advertised from the Big East and Big 12, then other leagues may follow suit in order to keep up.
