2010 Commit List

Hmmmm....I think we should probably recruit great football players not wrestlers. If they were wrestlers, basketball players, baseball players or track & field athletes, all the better. But they better be great football players. Just kidding guys, but you were almost making it sound like we should recruit "wrestlers" not football players. :)

O.K., Yes, I’m saying recruit high school football players that are high school wrestlers. There are some basketball and baseball players that have great work ethic and body awareness but I’ve never heard a high school baseball coach say. “For today’s practice were going to run to the next town and back,” For a lot of high school wrestlers that’s an easy day.

FB-wrestling isn't generally a combination I look for. When I think of combinations, I think of FB-track (sprints and jumping) for deep threats, FB-hoops (post players) for receivers who will likely be running inside routes (for the ability of the post player to shield the defender from the ball), FB-baseball (OF/C/P) for those likely to play QB (for the arm development and decision-making). As far as thinking "outside the box," I'd also consider football players with a dancing background a la UCLA-LA Ram RB Jon Arnett, who was a balet star as well; this was seen to help him with tiptoeing the sideline. All of these would also be good for keeping athletes in shape during the FB off-season.

That said, wrestling MIGHT help down linemen (and possibly receivers in leagues where CBs are likely to play bump) with handsparring. Still not at the top of my list for doubling.

Wrestling is great for both interior O and D linemen. It teaches balance and leverage.

Ballet and/or dancing over wrestling and only ONE example is given?! Please. Wrestling = strength, balance, and a very conditioned individual that can take a beating. There are a few lineman currently in the NFL who never played college football, they wrestled. How many ballet or dancing people are in football right now? Probably very few if any.

As can be seen by viewing the list I've provided, it doesnt matter what position the athlete plays.

And how many dancers can be listed?!

jesus mary joseph and the mule they rode in on - that was quite a comprehensive list. i kept laughing as i kept scrolling down the page. well done!

Stung, I don't know whether to smack you for including Mr. Phantom Sack or to commend you for the quality of the other guys on that list.

As it stands, given the presence of some of my favorite players on your list (Plunkett is my second favorite male QB of all time), R. White and Bob Bruenig are among the best defenders in Cowboys history), you have a convert. BTW, you listed White at least twice. LOL.

Well, there are 1,696 players in the NFL (active 53 man rosters x 32 teams) and I won't list them all, but I guarantee that everyone of them attributes much of their success in the NFL to the fact they were football players. :) Just keeping it real!

HHD: very true, but you cannot discount what got these guys to the NFL - it's cumulative.

it's like someone saying you simply like tattoos, and discounting your experiences and motivations that caused you to get inked. just keepin' it real

I know, I got a little lazy and didnt go back and edit out the guys that are on the list twice.

True, I was just adding to the discussion. Of course most guys wouldnt have made it without playing football. :)

I was thinking Kyle DeVan. Sac State didn’t recruit this NorCal kid, (I think they said he was too small). He won a State Wrestling Championship. Channel 3 said a year ago he was helping coach his high school wrestling team. Now he starts at LG for the Colts. (Starting at Oregon State was in there somewhere too)

Didn’t Lynn Swan Dance? I remember seeing him on Mr. Rogers. :?:

This is fun in that “You guys are are a little nuts and have way to much time on your hands”, kind of way. But, does anybody have anything to say about last Saturday’s scrimmage? :P Go post something up above.

WOW! That's quite a list. I can't imagine where you found it. I've been around for a while and I've never heard of some of those guys. But I have been on the field with jim Everett and I can tell you there is a good reason we called him Chris Everett. The only thing he ever wrestled with was the courage to play.

What do you mean by "we"? That nickname was all Jim Rome.

Of course, that doesn't affect the truth value of your allegation. You're certainly right about that. Except that it wasn't "Chris Everett" but "Chris Evert," as in the tennis star. And it was an insult to her (in many minds) because she had a lot more guts than Everett ever did.

i understand the qualities of using other sports but lets get real. what of these other sports is about lining up man vs man and using strength, quickness, and coordination to beat the living hell out of somebody?

Ficky I am calling Slo for a 15 yard penalty for Double mention of Ricky Williams. I will also call that Unsportsmanlike conduct- Forgetting who was on the list from the top to the bottom was like hanging with Ricky in the ganga forest.

As far as wrestling penalties go- i would say listing every guy who ever wrestled is stalling- but the first one is just a warning.

The one thing i would say wrestling might help with is understanding point of balance and leverage points, but other than that i am with HHD-being great football players made them what they are.

One final thought, the XFL tried to combine the whole wrestling/football thing and uh well, we know what happened there.

HH: The XFL wasn't so much a mixture of football and wrestling, per se (unless one counts the ill-fated attempt to spice things up by replacing kickoffs with steal-the-bacon, leading to a rash of injuries). It was a mix of football with the pro wrestling atmosphere, particularly bringing in WWE's then-lead broadcast team and Jesse Ventura, who actually had NFL broadcasting experience (Bucs and Vikes). The steal-the-bacon bit was bad from the start and splitting Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler killed the WWE tie-in and therefore ratings. No active wrestlers took part, and no wrestling moves were allowed. The idea to ban PATs and force a choice of one- or two-point conversion based on line of scrimmage via a run or pass was good. I even liked the personalized "names" on the jerseys (remember "He Hate Me?") the desperate attempt to drum up audience during the playoffs by adding a three-point conversion from the ten yard line, but there were only one or two attempts (I remember SF made one), not enough to save the league.

• “I draft wrestlers because they are tough, I have never had a problem with a wrestler.” - Joe Gibbs

• "I would have all of my Offensive Lineman wrestle if I could."- John Madden

• “I love wrestlers, they are tough and they make great football players.” Mike Stoops

• “Wrestlers make coaching football easy, they have balance, coordination, and as a coaching staff we know they’re tough.” - Tom Osborne

Somebody please come up with a Jim Rome quote to dis these guys.
