2010 Schedule

Looking ahead to the 2010 football schedule, it appears as though the Big Sky schedule has been set which means the only thing left is to know is when the Causeway will be set and who the last remaining non-conference opponent and date will be. As pervious stated the Hornets will open up at Stanford when the season kicks off. And if you are wondering, YES, Gerhart will be graduating. Although Stanford will most likely still win anyways, this just means that he won’t rush for over 200 yards and score 4 TD’s…someone else will. :?

Here is what’s been announced (based on championshipsubdivision.com):

  • - 9/4/10 - @ Stanford
    - 9/11/10 – OPEN
    - 9/18/10 – Weber State
    - 9/25/10 - @ Montana
    - 10/2/10 – Montana State
    - 10/9/10 – Northern Colorado
    - 10/16/10 – OPEN
    - 10/23/10 - @ Eastern Washington
    - 10/30/10 - @ Northern Arizona
    - 11/6/10 – Portland State
    - 11/13/10 - @ Idaho State
    - 11/20/10 – OPEN (Causeway @ “the farm extension”?)

I hope the last non-conference game, whoever it is, will be played on 9/11 and the Causeway will be played on 11/20. This will put a bye week smack in the middle of the season and can be put to good use as far as resting injured players and preparing for the final push of the season. I also hope that the Causeway will be played on the final week of the season. I just love how that loss that was handed to “the farm extension” was the way their season ended. I can’t think of a better way to cap a regular season.

Regarding the last opponent, it will be interesting to see who Wanless and Sperbeck go with to fill this. Assuming the financial health of the athletic department isn’t such that a 2nd money game is vital, it can’t be cal poly as they host Montana on 9/11. Southern Utah has that spot open and they proved to be a middle of a road type of team last season. I could see a home and home agreement being made for the next two seasons between SUU and Sac State. SUU has a pass happy offense which means there wouldn’t be an out of the ordinary defensive preparation needed compared to playing a triple option attack that cal poly has. The only other “regional” FCS team with that date open as of now is San Diego. USD fell apart once Harbaugh left for Stanford and is nowhere near the team they once were. If an FCS team isn’t scheduled, I would have to think that a D-II like Humboldt State or Southern Oregon is paid to play in Sac. Either way, I believe that the last open spot will probably be a home game.

Anyone have an inside track on who Sac is looking to fill the schedule with?

I hope that we play somebody like Humboldt State on Sept 11th, davis on Nov 20th and keep the mid season bye. I don't know how much we would have to pay Humboldt but they drew over 10,000 in 2008.
We need a extra home game because we only get 4 BSC home games and of course the money game is always on the road as is the Causeway this year. With only 4 home games and 7 away it is hard to build a local following.

If our improvement continues, I see 8-2 with the potential for 10-0, just based on those 10 games. Stanford can sometimes be snuck up on early in the season, but for now I'll take that as an L. My other L for now is, of course, Montana, though I'd dearly love to get their helmet up in the weight room.

I don't know if any of the bye weeks fit, but I'd love to schedule Liberty. Of course, that's purely for personal reasons and nothing to do with preparing us for the playoffs. LOL.

October 16 will be @ UC Davis- so the 9/11 game will more than likely be a D2 home game(Humboldt st). It is feasible to add Cal Poly the last game of the year 11/20 both have opening for this. It would give us 12 games (6 home 6 road).

Did you get the Oct 16th Causeway date from http://www.championshipsubdivision.com/fcs-schedules/2010-schedules/big-sky-conference-2010-schedules/ ? If so it shows that date as unconfirmed, I stiil expect the date for the Causeway to be Nov 20th. Without the 10/16 bye we would not have a bye all season. As far as I know we are only allowed 11 games so the Cal Poly game will not happen.

My calling for the Causeway to be on Nov 20th is just speculation on my part. And seeing as rivalry games are typically played at the end of the season, it would be more fitting to have it in late November.

I have mixed feelings on playing a D-II team. I like that it is a guaranteed home game and basically a guaranteed win. The down side is the win won’t count towards the playoffs as it’s not a D-1 win. At the same time, a D-II team scheduled after the FBS money game is a good strategy as it reduces the odds of starting the season 0-2. That’s why I threw SUU in there as they are a middle of the road FCS team and the win would count towards the playoffs. Plus with the playoffs expanding to 20 teams this season, the more wins that count, the better.

At this point I think a DII game placed in the right place in the schedule is a valuable tool. Not only is it a extra home date but a good opportunity to bring some of the newer players into the program in a lower pressure situation and/or rest players for more improtant games. I think this is the same reason why FBS teams pay to play FCS teams early in the year. In my opinion I think that opening with Humboldt in 2008 had a lot to do with our strong showing the next week at Colorado State. Last year after the UNLV game if we had played down the following week instead of playing Cal Poly we might have been in better shape to start the BSC games.

green laser -We are allowed to play 12 games we did it in 08.- The website had the oct 16 game listed under Uc Davis Scheduling- I don't know whether it's confirmed or not.

If you look at the web site dates not indicated in yellow are unconfirmed, the Oct 16th date is in white.
Unlike the Big Sky It don't look like the Great West has their league dates confirmed yet.

Maybe HHD can confirm, but we were allowed to schedule 12 games in 06 because the season started before Labor day. It has to do with how the weeks play out around the holidays I think so you only get that option once every 6 years or so. Crappy explanation, but it's something along those lines...

I think we get 12 games when the Saturday of Labor Day weekend falls in August. I 2008 we were 6-6 and hosted Humboldt on Aug 30th. This year Labor Day Saturday will be Sept 4th (Stanford) so 11 games.

We are also authorized 12 games (13 in the years you guys describe) if we play @ Hawai'i.

Why is this? I have always wondered why some teams had 13 games.

An extra home normally to recoup some revenue from going to Hawai'i...UH doesnt cover all the expenses...

I don't know the rules on why you get 12 games, but I'll check into it. I do know the opponent hasn't been scheduled for the week after Stanford. I have heard that perhaps Southern Oregon has been approached. Pretty sure we are trying to get a D2 opponent.

I'm sure we will schedule UCD last if we can, but I haven't heard anything. I hope it happens that way.

Well it’s too bad the DII opponent won’t happen after Stanford, I think that it would fit quite well there. Also the mid season bye would have been huge imo. But nothing is in stone yet so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

If they are going to schedule the bye in week 2, why not just go after a midseason FCS home game instead? Why burn a game on a non counter in the middle of the season? The midseason game is after a home game against UNC and followed by a road game at EWU. Say they schedule a midseason home game against USD; it would be a lower tier FCS team and give the Hornets good odds for a win. Plus USD would count towards the playoffs.

I agree with SDHornet, why not schedule a FCS Team to help position for a potential playoff invitation? If they schedule a DII team and with an expected loss to Stanford, The Hornets would have to go 7-2 the remainder of the season. I don't see how that's realistic!

This is a time the AD and Sperbeck need to put Sac in a position to be successful and make a playoff run!!

NO DII SCHOOL!!

If the dates work out right, would anyone object to playing the Manure Pile twice? That could be an easy way out of the situation for not much in terms of expenditures.
