2010 Schedule

I do believe UTSA will end up in the Southland since ALL of their sports are in that conference.

Sure, for the short-run, but if they're stated goal is going FBS, they'll have to leave the Southland at some point.

There is some discussions amongst the Southland membership as to whether they want UTSA to use them as a stepping stone for moving to the FBS.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Texas State want to move up as well?

Noticed Northern Arizona is missing from schedule. Believe they will be the last game of the scheduled season. Also believe that Arizona State has been moved to 2011.

Texas State hopes to move up to the FBS in 2012.

UTSA, Georgia St., ODU all have started up football programs and all will be on the field by 2012.

Why aren't any western schools bringing back/starting football?

99% of the purpose of a university is the classrom. Starting up a football program you have to have a million or so in hand and be prepared to lose a fair amount for five or ten years or probably forever. A university doesn't step into football lightly.

Actually Pacific is starting up a team and George Fox is looking into it.

I'd love for Burton to use his contacts to set up a game at Nevada. I've always thought this would be the perfect FBS game for us because 1) travel costs are low, 2) you have a slight chance of winning, and 3) fans could actually travel to the game and gamble. This obviously won't work for 2010, but maybe for 2011 or beyond?
Nevada would be a great choice. I would like Burton to try and get WAC opponents, they've been making a lot of noise lately. Perhaps Fresno State would be a good game(same as above), and we almost beat them a few years back. I think it would help with recruiting in 2011 or beyond. Fresno would be good for LA and Bay Area recruit's families, they could watch a good D-1 football game we possibly could win. Fresno State struggles against Nevada's offense every year.

I'd be fine playing Nevada if the payout was substantial. However, they won't be able to match the Pac-10 payouts we'll be getting.

Agreed. If we're going to decrease the odds by playing up, we need to maximize the return on it.

I'll take a 450k beat down over a 150k moral victory any day of the week since both instances put us behind the eight ball for the FCS playoffs.

I would like to see Nevada on Sac States's schedule too but found out that they don't play FCS any longer.
We have a long history with Nevada and used to play them on a semi regular basis, they are only 130 miles away and have a ton on Sacramento area players on their roster so it was a interesting series.

No question, the payouts from Pac-10 schools can't be replaced, especially for our program that can't sell at home.

However, all those 450k beat downs take a toll on a program. If you can make some noise and pull out a moral victory over a Nevada or Fresno St, you could gain momentum going into the FCS. You could also start putting more pockets in the seats and gain attention from recruits and the national media.

In today's Oregonian article, Burton said that we have 7 road games next season. This is news, right? The projected schedules I'd seen had only listed 6 road games.

Another big payout?

Reference to Arizona State being on the schedule for 2010. Originally was scheduled for 2011.

I wouldn't count on beating Arizona State. Sure, they lost a lot of games this year, but they were close. Amd yes, their quarterback situation is messy - but so is ours. They played a lot of freshmen and sophomores this year - they'll have a year under their belt. And their linesmen are BIG. Let's see what the schedule looks like six months from now.

There is NO way we are beating a Pac-10 school. We got beat up by one of the worst Pac-10 teams ever. Washington State's 2007 team.
