I hope this isn't taken the wrongway. I want us to get the best people possible. But we are giving a lot of schoolarships to kids not in the area. I hope we got some very good local talent too. Can't wait to see wednesday.

UC Farm Extension, Poly and the rest of the BSC don't 'stay home' when it comes to recruiting. If they are local it is an added bonus.

I agree with GCM. If the local kids are as good as the kids from anywhere else in the state, or Mars, we should go after them. Helps build support locally. I've looked at videos of the some of the commits and I don't see that same intensity in the locals (except for the Galas kid from Central Catholic). The coaches will offer to those that have the grades, and that want to learn and grow. This looks like a great class. The line for the next 5 years could be one of the best in the BSC.
I think it ebbs and flows with the talent locally. This just happens to be a year that the talent locally hasn't been particularly strong. Last year was a huge local talent class. Besides, we still have most of those kids for the next 4 years (redshirt in 2009)...so Im fine with a class this year that is not so heavily tilted local...

I too like to see locals playing for the Hornets and I think Coach Sperbeck has done a good job of transforming the program by adding more local players. He has established a lot of credibility with local athletes and HS/ JC coaches that we have not previously had and they now look at Sac State as a good option instead of the last choice. With that said, I want to see the Hornets go after and compete for the best possible student-athletes for the program. I like that Coach Sperbeck and company go out and compete, sometimes with higher level schools for athletes . Sometimes they get them, sometimes they don’t but at least they are out there competing instead of just waiting for the leftovers. From what I have seen so far I think that tomorrow is going to be a especially great day to be a Hornet!
Very impressive size on the O-line for Sac State. It really looks like Sperbeck and his staff are hitting a lot of home runs when it comes to recruiting this year.Hammerhead Dad said:
Cal Poly and Sac State battle each other for skilled positions and D-line, but not very often when it comes to O-linemen. With Cal Poly's triple option offense they tend to value quickness over size and most linemen are 6'3" and under. Cal Poly has only 2 OLs that are 6'4" and 2 that are 6'5". Cal Poly has 4 OLs that are 6'0".

I do think that by bringing 100 'local' prospects to the last home game is a fantastic strategy.
If we don't offer a player, having this many people helps build community specific support. Having a good relationship with the HS's represented builds a loyal and player-feeding foundation for the future. Plus, if we don't offer, the prospect might be so impressed he decides to walk-on. Learn and work hard to 'earn' the scholarship and playing time.
Whatever the outcome tomorrow, I think Sperbeck is hitting stride and doing a fantastic job.
On a side note, I read Sierra is eliminating four varsity sports. With CC's cutting back departmental funding, more and more highly qualified players will be looking at the three FCS programs in the state. I think with Sperbeck in charge and the funnel of new, quality prospects committing, our recruiting should be very strong. Rivals.com has us as 125th in the nation for our early signees. That would be two outstanding classes in a row.

Im happy we got some steals. But it is disappointing to have really only 1 local. Im not saying that only locals will help us win but you'd like to see more kids from the Sacramento Metro Area stay home. If they ever do we would destroy the BSC. We cant allow other FCS Schools like Portland state, Cal Poly and San Diego to come up and grab 4 locals and we get only 1. Even Davis got more locals than we did. Vacaville is not local in my opinion.Sacramento Metro area(rocklin ,roseville,folsom,elk grove,all areas in between. What happen to 100 locals at the Causeway Classic?
That being said good job on players like Douglas, Fukofuka,Brooks and Black.

Anyone in the Sac Joaquin Section is local as far as I'm concerned. But like I said, you are not going to get all the locals every year. The talent level locally this year wasn't all that spectacular...and then you have some guys like a Jackson Cummings where Sac State will never compete with an Ivy League education (even though IMO its undergrad degrees are GROSSLY overrated...its their grad education where they make their name, same goes for the UC system). It is what it is and hopefully the success from these kids coming in this year will help more and more of the locals to see that Sperbeck is building a championship program right in their own backyard...

Right on target SHA. The talent level in many areas of the state seem to have taken a bit of a hit this year.(I'm in socal/riverside county) I went to several different schools games and the number of highly talented, recruitable kids seemed much thinner. When thats the case it's togher on all schools to find the right recruit for the positions they need. Our class seems very strong and by the looks of it our oline outlook is nothing short of brilliant for the forseeable future!! Go Hornets!!
Montana only signed two Montana kids. In the whole state, I don't feel in the least concerned we didnt sign local kids only.

Douglas was the third leading rusher in the state with over 2600 yards and 24 TDs. He has about 4,000 yards rushing in his jr and sr years. In my opinion he flew way under the radar. Check him on youtube. No way we pass up him or Kyle Brooks for a local RB unless its Butler from Grant who ended up in the Pac 10 with WSU. The 100 kids at the Causeway Classic were from NorCal, not just Sacramento. My younger son was pretty heavily recruited out of high school and got letters and free tickets to UCLA, CAL, etc., but he didn't get a scholarship offer to a single Pac 10 school. Its a strange and unique dance that coaches and players do in a recruiting process.
Sperbeck's priority is from the local area, but he's got to recruit the best players he can get in California. Central CA, the inland empire and the bay area had a good group for us this year. Believe me, this staff scoured Sacramento, but either the kids were going big time D1 or they were just not quite what we wanted or needed. For example, there is a kid who is a sophomore at Del Oro that I know the coaches have been watching since he was a freshman. They will find the locals and get them most of the time if they are what we want and need. They would like nothing more. However, the more we start to win, the easier it will be to keep even better players at home. 5 of our 17 recruits had FBS offers and choose Sac State. We beat both Fresno State and San Jose State head to head, which isn't something we could say just a couple of years ago. In fact, one of our recruits is from Fresno and Pat Hill came after him late in the process and couldn't get the kid to kick us aside and kept his non-binding verbal commitment with Sac State. That is great recruiting by our staff this year. That being said, I will disclose that I am totally biased and a homer given that I sleep with the Recruiting Coordinator's mother every night.
I think the Sky, or in Sac State case the Big Sky, is the limit for the Hornets under Sperbeck and his staff. I think they put together another outstanding class and agree with HHD that Douglas is the real deal.
