2010 Spring Practice

(they allowed sacks in scrimmage??)

They pretty much just touch the QB, so it's assumed that the sack would have been made. Sacks and QB rushing yards are pretty inflated stats in the spring and fall since the QBs can't be hit.

Ya think this could lead to an invite for the Tuskegee University (D-II) to PSU or possibly a home & home for Grambling. I would love to see their marching band perform at PGE and maybe give some incentive to start one of own.

JT had three catches. Nice.

Look like I'll be able to make it to practice on Friday.

I was finally able to make it out to practice for the first time this spring.

Here's some random thoughts...

Julius looks pretty dang good at tight end. I have no doubt in my mind that he'll make the team. He had a great catch when the defense was playing the offense, and then had a pretty good move to break free. Richards looks solid as well. I'd need to see more of their blocking, but TE could look good this season.

I noticed a few dropped passes today. I realize it's spring, but dropped passes were a problem last season, so I'd hate to see it be a problem this season as well. Lewis dropped a great pass that was right in his hands, but then came back moments later with a spectacular catch on a ball that I really didn't think he'd pull in.

I'm not a big fan of CKs mechanics, but he had some pretty good passes today that had a bit of zip on them. The ran a few passing plays that seemed to focus on getting him out of the pocket that looked pretty good.

McCaffrey must be dinged up, as he wasn't in pads and seemed to be doing some stretching/strength work on the sideline.

If the numbers on the jerseys were correct, Watts looked really strong at running back. Ran with a lot of power and appears to have lived in the weight room in the offseason.

Hearing the banging of the pads out there today, I'm really looking forward to the spring game.

Great weather for the spring game today.

First off, hats off to the PSU Athletic Department. Today was a well ran event. I know it stinks that we're playing out at Hillsboro this season, but it sort of had a 'home' feel to it today. Viking flags flying at the top of the stadium was a good idea, and the alumni game was entertaining. It was good to see some guys out there that we've not talked about in a while. Wiser, Smith, King, etc. We picked up our tickets, so section 7U will be the stand in for section 120 this season.

A few comments about the game.

Defense:

I know JG wanted to be the 'hardest hitting' team on the west coast, but the last three years seemed plagued with poor tackling fundamentals. I think I only saw one bad missed tackle today and the fundamentals of one on one tackling seem to be improved. The secondary looks to be pretty good. Shead and Ross should start at the corners with Davis and Williams (wish I could have seen him today to see if he's improved) to add depth. Not sure if the Almond brothers will both start like they did on the green team today, but Snow showed some tough play as well today. I'm so glad to see the 4-3 back. Hopefully we have the depth that we need.

Offense:

Watts ran tough today. I really like his style. Sort of reminds me of a Joe Rubin where he has the ability to drag defenders for a couple of extra yards. The QB play ranged from bad to great. Taylor had a terrible first pass, but then came back to put a nice TD drive together. If I were to need to name a starter after today, I'd go with CK. However, fall is a ways away and we still have a Mr Hubel that we didn't get to see today. As far as the receivers go, I liked what Monahan showed today. Showed good hands and I think he had three or four catches. Too bad that Julius was out today. Anyone know what happened? We had a rash of bad snaps today. I'd noticed some during the practice that I was able to attend last week, and I was sort of hoping that it wouldn't be an issue.

Other:

Looks like Shead may be doing some punt returns, or maybe he was just out there for spring. Not certain. I forgot about how windy Hillsboro Stadium is. I know we only have four games there this year, but I hope that doesn't affect our kicking game.

And now the long wait for fall camp to start....

After hearing so much about the pistol offense and the powerful running attack, I was surprised by how much they threw the ball today. Makes me think maybe Hubel has a chance to be on the field next year. A lot of guys were out with injuries that I was excited to see play. Willie Griffin and McCaffrey at the running back, and I really wanted to see Julius play TE.

Also, saw Quizz and James Rodgers in the crowd. Now we just need to work on getting them to transfer in!

You're right, it is now the long wait for next season.

Why would they be at Hillsboro? :o

Was wondering the same thing, but didn't want to bother them by asking. I was thinking maybe they are friends with one of the ex-beavers, Ross or Engstrom.

Spring football in the air
An overview of the annual spring football scrimmage

http://www.dailyvanguard.com/spring-football-in-the-air-1.2264521

Saturday was a beautiful day for football, and new head coach Nigel Burton and the Vikings seized the opportunity to showcase the team’s new offense and defense at the annual spring scrimmage.

Held at Hillsboro Stadium, where all of PSU’s football games will be played this season due to a planned renovation of PGE Park, the spring scrimmage pitted the green team against the white team. When the dust finally settled, the final score was 14-13 in favor of the Vikings’ white team.

“The excitement was great,” Burton said in a statement released by the school. “There were a couple of good plays where guys got fired up on the field. There was good execution, and we saw guys continue to grow even during the game. Those are the things we are looking for and that we are excited about.”

The size of the team this spring offered a unique opportunity for the Vikings. Unlike in years past, where the offense taking on the defense had to suffice for a spring game, this year featured two separate teams with their own offenses and defenses.

The white team dominated the statistics. With senior Tygue Howland, sophomore Nick Green and freshman Hank Taylor all sharing time taking the snaps, the team threw for a combined 200 yards. This was the first chance in over a year for fans and new coaching staff alike to see Howland in action. After splitting playing time with now senior Drew Hubel in the 2008 season, Howland missed all of last season due to a knee injury.

Sophomore receiver Justin Monahan played for the white team, but he led receivers on both teams. He may have made only four catches, but they totaled 72 yards. A newcomer to the team, he shows great promise as a complementary receiver to senior Raymond Fry, who was the team’s leader in receptions last season. On Saturday, Fry had four catches for 48 yards.

The white ground attack was equally as fierce, rushing for 69 yards to the green team's 15 yards. The running game will have to improve, though, by the start of football season. They may have outrun their teammates, but the white team garnered a paltry 2.6 yards per carry average.

Senior running back Kevin Watts showed up to play. His 11 runs for 41 yards was a game high, and he also had a two-yard run for a touchdown. Watts was a special teams player and backup cornerback last year.

The green team’s defense didn't give the white team’s offense an easy afternoon. Senior linebacker DJ Macarthy recorded a game-high total of eight tackles. Macarthy, who has great speed and strong tackling ability, played in the last two games of last season and looked promising.

Junior linebacker Ryan Rau had six tackles for the white team. Rau led the team in tackles last season with a total of 72.

The green team's ace in the hole was sophomore defensive lineman Siasau Matagiese. He recovered a bad snap and returned it three yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and to make the score 7-all.

Matagiese played in 10 games last season despite not being listed as a starter. With his speed and ball awareness he has a good chance of starting this year.

Junior cornerback DeShawn Shead racked up an interception for the white team. Shead totaled six interceptions in his rookie season but managed only half as many last season.

A number of incumbents did not participate in the scrimmage, including two of last year's starters—senior quarterback Drew Hubel and sophomore cornerback Michael Williams.

Vikings football will resume in early August, and the first game is set for Sept. 4 at Arizona State. The Vikings’ first home game will be in week four of the season, when they host Idaho State on Saturday, Oct. 2 to begin conference play.

Just a few things of note that I noticed during the game. Keeping in mind it is a 'spring game' and you don't throw all your cards on the table and the team was divided among 2 teams:

OLine will need to step it up a few notches. I saw plenty of missed assignments and blocks. We don't appear to be very 'heavy' compared to Big Sky standards (at least in full gear appearance). Any way you slice it, physics will always matter when it comes to pushing people around on the LOS. We are gonna need to be dominant up front to beat Montana/Montana St./Weber St. They still don't appear to be cohesive as I would have expected at this point. I guess I want to know who my leader is with this group and I want him to assert himself and for it to show.

Running game was not established and still remains questionable. A number of things here. First we ran spread for the majority of time and looked pass as primary opition in that set. In this pistol we should expect to see the QB get his fair share of designed run plays. We only had 3 (or 4?) RB in full gear for the game. Most of Watts' yardage came very late in the game when he got back to back to back carries and a more lax defense(not taking anything away from him because he did the best he could with what he had). We never saw any breakout runs where any 'real speed' was exhibited. Perhaps this was due to Oline a bit also. Griffin and 2 incoming freshman will have their opportunity to contribute right away as long as they learn the system and show competency. We need some breakaway speed at this position.

Linebackers looked great and were aggressive in their coverage and especially their pursuit of the ball. I can see this group be the strength of the team. As long as Rau stays healthy in the middle, he is on his way to an All-Big Sky year.

Tight end. Perhaps my biggest surprise/disappointment??? With The Pistol offense, a playmaking TE is mandatory. I know we were non-existent at this position prior to Burton & Co. however, we grabbed a JC TE, brought in a basketball player(who was hurt and didn't play), and picked up a few TE from wherever and..........they don't use them in the passing game??? Now whoever is the starting TE will have to be a blocker first, but must have pass catching and route running skills to fit in The Pistol. Maybe it was because the QB's aren't accustomed to looking for TE in the passing game, but with as many passes that were thrown in the game, the TE should have gotten a look with at least 6-7 of those in this offense. As I recall I only saw 1. It will be imperative that we establish the TE to run the middle routes that open up the outside and crossing lanes for the WR. It is a foundation of The Pistol. At Nevada, the TE was 2nd or 3rd leading pass catcher. We only have 1 potential TE coming in so we are going to need to make it happen with this group. Julius maybe a great athlete, but he hasn't played a down of D1 ball and will need a periord of time to transition even if it all works out. We need an aggressive blocker that can run and catch the ball.

Quarterback. I counted 6 red jerseys. We have 7 QB on the roster. Why? Did we bring in so many guys in spring just to spread reps around? Were we not confident with at least 2 QB on the roster that could make the transition and be productive? Dashnaw is midyear freshman and I like that he is here gaining valuable experience, but why 7 QB on the spring roster? (I only recall one series Dashnaw played in??) By looking at other teams and history, one would make a case for 4 (5 counting the injured Hubel). I would have liked to essentially seen 4 QB's get the snaps in the game (and spring practice for that matter) with the way they formatted the green vs. white format, 2 of them getting 65-75% of the snaps and another 2 getting 35-25%. I am sure in practice the reps get diluted among 6 qb's??

Special Teams. Where were they? I wanted to see my FG Kicker put in during a few in the crunch or unexpected attempts. I thought we would at least see that at the end of the game in a simulation. I think we are still settling in on a punt returner also. I saw some fundamental errors out there in that position so I hope we improve.

Anyhow, just a few observations and comments. ***Disclaimer that I am not a coach, but with the traffic from posters on this blog being at a pathetic volume, I thought adding my 'two cents' might pick it up a bit. It was a decent all around performance Saturday. We are going to be a very young team. I liked the attitude of the team and organizaton compared to previous staff. It was my first time at Hillsboro Stadium and I liked the setting. Without a doubt, we can't ask for anything more from a temporary facility except being a little closer to the campus. I hope we can get the student body to come out to the games and boost the crowd and home field advantage. Let's get rid of the AC/DC "Back in Black" for this team. That was Glanville's song, let's find one that fits Burton & Co. and this team and run with it. The spear is history and as much as I like it, so should be that theme song.

Interesting that the offensive coach says Kavanaugh is at this point leading the QBs. His passing was 6-8 for 30 yards, nothing spectacular but accurate, not much better than the other QBs. None of the articles mentions his running, which I suspect was equally good.

Hey, if we can get an efficient passing game that doesn't turn the ball over, I'll take that.
