The fam and I will be making the journey to Eugene to check out my sister compete this weekend at the west regional track & field meet. I’ll also get to check out a bunch of Hornets competing this weekend as well. The Hornets will be sending 14 women and 6 men who will be competing in a total of 27 events. Anyone else heading north?

The group is comprised of 14 women who will compete in 17 events and six men and one relay team which will take part in 10 events. The NCAA West Preliminary will take place at legendary Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., May 26-28. Each event will have 48 participants with the top 12 from the West and East Preliminary advancing to the NCAA Div. I Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

The women's entries include senior Lea Wallace who is ranked second in both the 800 and 1500. Naima Goodwin is seeded 13th in the high jump and Moira Robinson is 17th in the triple jump.

The men have three entries ranked among the top 20 in the west. Senior Ronald Brookins is fourth in the 110-hurdles and 16th in the long jump. Fellow senior Emilio Hernandez is 13th in the high jump and will also compete in the long jump and triple jump.

I had a wonderful trip to Eugene and aside from it being wet, cold, and miserable all meet long it was still a fun and exciting trip. The Hornets represented well and I thought they did a tremendous job. Lea Wallace advanced to the NCAA finals in both the 800 and 1,500 meters, Ronald Brookins advanced to the finals in the 110 meter hurdles and thanks to a North Dakota State 800 meter runner tripping over his own feet, Nathanael Litwiller will also advance to the finals in the 800 meters. Emilio Hernandez came close to making the finals in the high jump but just missed out. The finals will be in two weeks in Des Moines, Iowa at Drake University.
