Portland State received it's first verbal commitment for the 2011 year that I 'm aware of.

Barlow's Wolfe Gain Vikings Bid

One of our Top in State Linemen is Barlow High Senior John Wolfe. Today John was made an offer by Coach Nigel Burton and Portland States University. Well it did not take long for this Bruin to decide that he was ready to become a Viking.

The crazy world of college recruiting, this one may have gone the Vikings way:

http://blog.mysanantonio.com/utsa/2011/01/johnson-says-hes-in-as-stretch-run-begins/

"Elsewhere, the Roadrunners have missed on their second junior-college offensive lineman, Mt. San Jacinto’s Anthony Moxley. A source in the sports information department at Portland State said he’s signed with the Vikings, with an official announcement pending once the rest of the school’s junior college class follows suit.

Moxley’s decision to stay on the West Coast must have caught the Roadrunners by surprise. Not only were they expecting him to sign along with L.A. Pierce linebacker Brandon Reeves, they’d already tentatively assigned him a uniform number."

Anthony Moxley is quite a coup, especially end-arounding UTSA, leapfrogging the WAC.

Could recruiting be Burt's saving grace? If so, Portland State could develop quite catalytically. Barlow's John Wolfe is certainly no slouch. Here is a evaluation from Scout.com

OL, 6-2/291, Gresham (Ore.) Barlow
Wolfe has been a name that’s been on the radar the past few years, especially after he impressed last summer at the All-Poly Camp in Hawaii. He impressed again on Sunday and was one of the top linemen in the event. The MVP for offensive linemen went to Sioasi Aiono, and he deserved it, but Wolfe wasn’t far behind at all. Wolfe was super aggressive and took more reps than any other offensive linemen at the event. He didn’t have great knee bend, but he more than made up for it with great technique, allowing him to handle virtually any defensive linemen he faced.

Looks like he's a two star recruit with Rivals. Nice grab!

Really like that name---Moxley. Sounds like he does everything in a way that requires moxy. That's a good image for the team.

Found a couple of considerations on ESPN.

Chico High football standout Davis going to Portland State

http://www.chicoer.com/fromthenewspaper/ci_17061920

CHICO — Chico High standout defensive end Mike Davis verbally committed to Portland State University after making a recruiting trip to the campus over the weekend.
Davis received a full scholarship offer to play football for Portland State, a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) program, formerly Division I-AA, which competes in the Big Sky Conference — the conference of this year's national champion, Eastern Washington.

"When I went to the school I saw the weight room and stadium and really liked it there," said Davis, who stands at 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, and recorded 42 tackles for the Panthers his senior year, according to maxpreps.com. "I met most of the team at Portland and was really impressed. They were all just like a family there. That's what I really wanted out of a college."

Davis plans to pursue a degree in physiology, and ultimately, enter a career as a firefighter.

Chico High football coach Jason Alvistur said Davis will be a huge asset to Portland State, given his broad skill set.

"Mike is an incredible athlete," said Alvistur. "It's rare to have a guy as big as him move as well as he does. He's been a blessing to our program. With his frame, he has the ability to pack on a lot of pounds. (Portland State) is really getting an athlete. I think that with Mike, they're getting a player that can potentially play a lot of different positions. He can play defensive end but can play in the interior, or even offensive. He definitely has a lot of versatility and upside."
Alvistur explained that Davis grew significantly as a player over the past two years, and that the Chico product positioned himself to move to the next level by attending a number of high-caliber summer combines.

"I think a big thing for Mike's development and success was the time between junior and senior year," said Alvistur. "That's when he really committed to weight lifting and training. Up to that point, he's always been able to get by on ability. When he made the commitment to get stronger, he sky-rocketed his play. He also made the decision to take upon himself to market himself, and in Northern California, that's kind of what you have to do. He drove to Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) and Portland State to participate in their camps. That's when they fell in love with his size and athleticism."

Davis is the first athlete to play under Alvistur to go on to Division I. According to Alvistur, Davis leaves large shoes for the Panthers to fill.

"Having him go to Portland puts us on the map, which is nice," said Alvistur. "As a coach it's nice to coach those kids. It makes your program better. Hopefully we can get a few D-I players out of this area, and hopefully some colleges will take a closer look at us. I'm going to miss his presence on the field. He was one of our biggest and best athletes. You could always depend on him to play hard. He's going to leave a big hole in our line."

Burton seeks Graves

Nigel Burton generally gets to quarterbacks. Burton is the former Jesuit defensive back great now coaching Portland State. He made an in-home recruiting visit last week to Folsom ace quarterback Dano Graves, and the reason he appreciates Graves so much is he can relate.

Because he turned games with his big-play ability, The Bee was inspired to create a Defensive Player of the Year honor, with Burton the first recipient in 1993. He started three years at safety for the Washington Huskies, always motivated that he was "too small." That's exactly what Graves deals with now.

Some claims over on the Sac board that he's already committed to Sac State, but this doesn't sound like it. Anyone looking at his u tube has to be impressed. Running he looks like LaMichael James and, did he have any inceptions? But face it, he's 5'10" if that. At least he doesn't throw a sidearm like Cavanaugh does. He's a lot faster than Cavanaugh.

Looks like Cal Poly offered him as well.

Nice to see that our under construction stadium is helping to lure recruits in.

Toureen verbals to the Vikings

PSU impressed CG wide receiver

It took Cottage Grove High School star wide receiver Alex Toureen a little while to get used to the idea of going to college and playing in the big city of Portland, but after he cleared that bar, Toureen decided to commit to the Portland State Vikings football program.   "I went on an unofficial visit and didn't really like Portland, but when I went on my official visit, I got to spend some time with the players and the coaches and I loved the town," Toureen said. "The first time I went there it was kind of a shock because it was the first time I had really seen a big city. I didn't like it, but I went back later and everything was kind of calmed down and I actually like a big town now. I feel like I would be at home, especially with all the people and the coaches. They care lot about the program."

Toureen, who was recently selected to the Oregonian's second team 4A all state team (for what it's worth, in this reporter's opinion he should have been first team), went on his official visit January 7-9. On Sunday morning, Jan. 9, he told Portland State head coach Nigel Burton that he wanted to be a Viking. Toureen expects to vie for playing time in his freshman season.

"The PSU coaches want me up there as soon as possible and they said there was a really good chance of some early playing time, which I am hoping for. They told me they will play the best three receivers and they said I had a good chance of being one of those three.  They graduated two receivers and most of the returning receivers are taller.   I'll be a slot, inside receiver. They told me they were pretty much looking for what I have. When I went up there they told me I was the No. 1 receiver and I was the No. 1 recruit they had. So, that kind of made a difference."

Coach Burton and tight ends coach Steve Cooper came to Toureen's home a couple of days before his visit to talk to with him and his family. The Toureens were impressed with what PSU had to offer.

Toureen was hoping to get a full ride offer from Washington State, but he came to the realization that he liked Portland State more.

I do not think Cal Poly is still recruiting Richards so I would say that PSU has a great chance to land him. This will be his first official visit with only two weekend left before signing day.

EDISON COMMITS TO PORTLAND STATE

Cornelius Edison gave an oral commitment to Portland State University after taking an official visit to the campus last weekend. Edison, a 6-foot-4 and 280-pound senior, also had an offer from Army and was being recruited by Eastern Washington, San Diego and Central Washington.

Edison was a member of The News Tribune's All-Area team and was named the SPSL South's offensive and defensive lineman of the year in 2010.

Another article about Edison's commitment to PSU:

Viking Goes to Vikings

http://washingtonpreps.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1177313

With a little thought and a great idea of how he fit in Curtis High's star big man was ready to make the call. He just decided to commit to a familiar name. At least to him.

Cornelius Edison of the Curtis Vikings will finish school and pack his bags for Portland. Once there he will join Coach Nigel Burton and staff and become a Portland State Viking.

"On signing day I am committing to Portland State and I could not be happier," said the massive linemen.

What will he do once in Portland?

"I have seen the campus and the facility and the new stadium. Once I settle in I will get to work," he said.

Coach Burton took over the Vikings last year and while the season had its ups and downs he brought a new energy and vibrancy to the program that had been missing.

That and a newly remodeled Civic Stadium should give the Vikings a shot at rising to the tops of the Big Sky.

"Computer Engineering is what I want to study and that is a great program at PSU. I met the head of the department and he has a solid program there," he added.

Where will he fit in?

"Offensive line is where I will play. Guard, Tackle, wherever I am needed."

Edison has a great disposition and is stronger than many kids his age. While it is not clear where and when he might see action it is highly possible that offensive line coach Brad Davis will have him ready to go.

Davis is a former Oklahoma Sooner and won a National Championship when he was there. He went on to Coach at North Carolina and Texas A & M. He is a great teacher and is doing a nice job of pulling the offensive line into a cohesive unit.

Apparently Burton and Coach Eric Jackson had a nice in home visit which made a difference to Edison who had other Big Sky and Pac 10 schools pursuing him/

The Viks are rumored to be looking hard at David Jones and Nick Holt; both Seattle area HS studs.

Final thoughts from Edison?

"This will be a lot of work but I am ready."

We wish one of Washington's best big men nothing but success in the future!
