2011 Recruiting Thread

Here is another PSU commit. Looks like a good one.

According to Rivals 6'4" 217 Mansel Simnons commits to PSU. Had offers from CP, UM, Sac St, Air Force and Washington State.

From the Sacramento Bee:

Mansel Simmons of Sheldon High School has given a verbal commitment to play scholarship football at Portland State.

A physical and fast 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Simmons is a superb blocker with good hands. He will play for coach Nigel Burton, the former Jesuit High star from the early 1990s

From the LA Times prep blog:

Mission Hills Alemany quarterback Vernon Adams has committed to Portland State, Coach Dean Herrington said Monday.

Adams was the key figure in helping the Warriors reach the Pac-5 Division semifinals.

Looks like a nice pick-up:

HS FOOT: Alemany QB headed to Portland State

http://mt.insidesocal.com/prepsports/2011/01/hs-foot-alemany-qb-headed-to-p.html

Vernon Adams, a quarterback for Alemany, has committed to Portland State.

"I just felt most comfortable there," said Adams, who also had an offer from Eastern Washington.

Nice to beat out the defending National Champs for a recruit. That says a lot about the recruiting ability of the staff at PSU.

Or not. :D

Yeah, you guys probably really threw him off having the same color turf as your uni's. What a shame. :)

pretty brutal day for the Viks. lost their top two guys in the final hours. hopefully they can have the same success they had after signing day last year

I have only found this article, so I don't know if this is official or not:

Siliga inks with Portland State

http://www.redlandsfootballnews.com/?p=343

Redlands High School got an 11th-hour commitment last night when all-CIF defensive tackle John Siliga committed to Portland State. Siliga signed his letter of intent alongside Redlands teammate Jordan Smith, who signed with San Diego State, at midfield of Dodge Stadium.

“I decided last night,” Siliga said. “They offered me at the beginning and have stuck by me this entire time. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go that far from home but Portland State is a great place for me.”

Nice pick up. The first of many, I'm sure.

Losing one to the national champions and one to a Pac-12 team is no basis for shame. Rather, it is a basis by which to measure our next- and subsequent-years' recruiting progress. If we lose none next year in the 11th hour, that will serve as a clear signal as a vote of confidence in our program's direction and leadership. An A-/B+ is not that far from an A.

It was a nice thing to see ewu nip delaware in the national championship game. I am a lover of progress and not of continued big sky affiliation, but I hate how delaware rips off Michigan's image, having absolutely no originality of their own and the audacity to wear another university's tradition as if they had earned it themselves.

They are rather blue hens (the egg-laying variety), not Wolverines. I am sure they are blue after their loss. But I doubt they felt much like the female chickens whose name and image they embrace. Really, when you think about it, they have an incredibly pathetic nickname and sport uniforms of unquestionable fraudulence. Perhaps they derive a twisted sense of power from their illusive use of white-collar criminality. Their sense of power is easily stripped away, though, by exposing them and seeing the truth for what they really are.

I'm glad ewu snatched victory away from those phonies. The delaware football team truly sucks the eggs that they themselves (in image) produced bodily. It is good they lost. Very good. And we have ewu to thank for that moral victory. Kudos to metro Spokane, Cheney being incidental to it geographically.

To the end, It was still anybody's game. ewu, on the national momentum of Colin Cowherd and the new red field, probably figured they were entitled to claim the prize just as much as anyone else could claim to do so; so why not? Besides, unlike ewu, delaware had no national sports celebrity alum nor any boise-styled colored field to boast of for the season's merit as ewu had. ewu was on the national stage as an innovator on the fcs frontier and delaware represented the old guard. ewu, in a sense, held a higher claim to the fcs's top prize. Their sense of power sprung up out of truth and value-creation, not of twistedness and dishonesty.

What is great for PSU (and a selling point for our program) is having honorable national fcs champions like ewu as our travel partner and paired conference football rival. Our football program's national progress will then be directly gaugable next year in head-to-head competition with them.

It also begs the question, "if they did it, our "Spokane cousins," why not believe that we can certainly gear up to win one ourselves?" Why not indeed? Having them in this position is a luxurious benefit to our program. Playing them next year will be as good as playing delaware or any another national contender like appalachian state or james madison or massachusetts, or montana for that matter. This is a genuine bonus of consideration for our program. As a result, the next ewu game will carry revealing significance vis-a-vis our football program's level of national competitiveness.

Progress, Vikings!
