2011 Season: Are We Turning the Corner?

I have to say that, after the last two weeks, we've gone toe-to-toe with two of the nation's best teams, and kept the games interesting throughout. At the beginning of the year, if you told me that we would keep it close with the Third-best team in the nation, I would have said you were crazy. Same thing about keeping it close in Missoula today. Have we finally hit the point where we have to be respected week in and week out? Is PSU football finally on the way up again?

Such a crazy start to the year. I can look at this season two different ways.

On one hand, the only losses were to two nationally ranked teams and TCU. Their toughest opponents should be behind them, now it's time to handle the rest of the league. Could end up as a season that shows a ton of progress. Hopefully, a drastic improvement in their record.

On the other hand, take away a blocked field goal against NAU and a bad snap on a punt by Idaho State, and they could very easily be 1-5 with the only win coming against SOU. They still have to play a team that beat Oregon State and on the road against the defending national champions. Not going to be easy. And maybe most importantly, is McCaffrey going to be back?

I have a bad feeling that McCaffrey is gone for the year. It's being referred to as 'indefinitely.' He was in a ton of pain and the broadcast seemed to ignore the whole thing as far as trying to see what happened.

Have we turned the corner? Perhaps. It's tough to say yes after losing to the Montana schools in a 14 day span by a total of 8 points.

If we can win two of the four BSC games that we have left, I will say yet.

I think it's up in the air. We have a lot of seniors starting this year so I am wondering if we will have a drop off next year. A lot is dependent on recruiting of course. This will be Burton's third recruiting class. I wonder how the previous two will pan out.

Portland State enters November with FCS playoff hopes alive:

I just found myself looking at scores from FCS games from other conferences to see if teams ranked anywhere from #20 - #30 lost. Furman, Eastern Kentucky, and Brown all lost. And Central Arkansas and North Dakota are playing later tonight. In the past 5 years, I haven't once checked an FCS score outside of the Big Sky because the Viks weren't anywhere close to the top 25.

In my opinion, fans caring about the top 25 this late in the season is a sign that they have definitely turned the corner. Now, just need to finish strong against Weber.
