Looks like spring practice is going to get started in early April.

Since I think our defensive improvement will make or break success, I have some comments...

I wish we had three Deshawn Sheads on the squad. They sure would look good at right corner, left corner, and strong safety. Not sure if I'm happy that the change to strong safety is permanent. He shuts down one corner position. I think I said this last year, and I'm saying it again, Williams needs to make a ton of improvement. If he does, our secondary won't be too bad. Haven't seen this Kincy kid, but between he, Ross, and an improved Williams, corner *may* be solid.

Is Shoemaker out for all of spring drills? Our LB corp should be pretty solid.

The defensive line will be interesting to see. We bring about 100 of our tackles back this season. Fall will be even more interesting. If those three transfers can bring anything, we'll be pretty tough, and pretty deep on the defensive line. I can't wait to see Wade in the fall.

Sounds like the run defense is better.

Could be that they're used to seeing the pistol zone reads, but I'm hoping that our run defense is just better...

Went to the Spring Game today. I have to say that our defense seriously needs to step up and play by the rules; they got called for 4 personal fouls for late hits, and killed several stops with stupid offsides and PI penalties. At times, it looked like the offense couldn't be stopped, but many drives were aided by defensive penalties. All I can say is that there is a long way to go.

Penalties on both sides of the ball were pretty bad.

At least the run defense looks to be improved.

It was entertaining to see only Kavanaugh in a no-contact jersey. Not used to seeing quarterbacks getting hit in a spring game.

I was impressed with Milhollin's toughness and ability to run at the qb position. He got absolutely lit up by Rau as he ran up the middle, the defense's entire sideline flooded the field to celebrate the huge hit. He took the very next play straight up the middle again for a pretty nice gain. He might be running the pistol offense sometime in the coming years.

And Zach Brown is a stud. This guy can kick a 53 yard field goal, and it doesn't seem like a big deal. Can't believe there are 2 more years of this guy.

Milhollin was pretty tough out there. I was surprised how quickly he got up after the hit by Rau. On the flip side, he really struggled in the pocket. Seemed to get 'happy feet' really quickly and was off and running before the routes developed. Perhaps that was intentional play calls for the qb run, but it seems that defenses would spy him with an athletic guy to defend that. Maybe he just had a bad day, but other than that fade for the TD, which is a one step drop and throw, he has some work to do.
