Wheelwright Best of Best

For much of the opening game of the National Division matching Oakland (Oakland, Calif.) and Centennial (Corona, Calif.), there were six Division I signees on the court.

None was better than Centennial’s 6-foot-1 guard Gelaun (pronounced Ja-Lawn) Wheelwright.

In addition to finishing with a game-high 33 points in the hard-fought 82-74 victory pitting state-ranked teams, Wheelwright had five boards, four assists and three steals, drawing plenty of raves playing against the likes of Oregon-bound Jabari Brown (33 points), UC Riverside signee Dominique Taplin (18 points, 7 rebounds) and future UC Santa Barbara player T.J. Taylor (12 points).

It looked like, for one game at least, that the University of Southern California may have made a mistake in backing off and allowing Wheelwright to sign with Weber State.

“That (USC cooling on his oral commitment) lit a fire under me,” said Wheelwright. “Weber came in late in August and after taking an official visit, I decided to go there.”

Wheelwright did it all, handling the ball flawlessly, collecting key rebounds and finding the open teammates like New Mexico signee Dominique Downing (24 points) and future Long Beach State 49er Michael Caffey (8 points).

Thanks for the info.

Now I'm glad we passed on TJ. This kid is going to be a great player for us. All of our recruits are doing great. I've said it before, It is going to be hard to redshirt any of these guys. They can all play. I would think that at least one of them will redshirt. It may come down to injuries or who comes in in the best shape. I can't wait until June to get a first look at all of them playing together. :notworthy:

Link to his stats. The last four games he has been tearing it up.

He has 40 total TO and 40 Steals...Thats pretty impressive :notworthy:

one thing that scares me about him is how many 3's he shoots. He shoots a lot and his overall percentage is less than 34%. Overall seems like he could be a very good player though.

His team plays at a breakneck speed. That probably contributes to his TO totals. The 40 Steals tells me that he gambles alittle on defense. Some of these dynamis are going to change at the next level. Hopefully, his steals will be there as he learns to play a more disaplined defense and that his TOs will go down in a more structured offense. The plus side of all of this is that he has the skills and athleticism to make this transition, if he will take to the coaching, like I think he will. He has a nose for the ball and a scorers mentality. He may be more of a two guard than a point. We are going to have a great guard line for the next several years.
