Hey Hornets fans,
Just wanted to update you on the Buffs. We named our starting QB today (surprisingly early). It's Jordan Webb, the transfer from Kansas. He throw 13TDs 12Ints with 64% completion last year for the Jayhawks. Those stats obviously don't look overly impressive, but we have some decent depth at QB and he quickly took control and won the position over the presumed favorite (Texas transfer Connor Wood). Hopefully, for the Buffs' sake, Webb proves to be the correct choice and everything will be put to rest by the the time we face you guys in game 2. However, if things go poorly against CSU (god forbid we lose to them), don't be surprised if you encounter two QB's in your game against the Buffs.

Two Colorado QBs in the Sac State game wouldn't surprise me at all, even barring a CU loss to the Rams. If the Buffs take control early (like most prognosticators expect, this being a FCS game for CU), the smart thing to do would be to play as many as you can get away with to get some field time and prevent the loss of starters to injury in a then-meaningless game. However, if Sac stays close (or even takes the lead) early, as I expect (though not to the degree I expect for our NMSU game), CU may switch things up to light a spark under the offense to prevent a Oregon State-style debacle that will decidedly not play well in Boulder, particularly if it is on the heels of a loss to CSU. Additionally, with depth of that nature, some coaches go the QB by committee route anyway. It doesn't work that often, but in the case of the early 1950's LA Rams, it worked spectacularly with HOF QBs Bob Waterfield and Norm Van Brocklin.
Who knows? Those are only three scenarios in which CU could play more than one QB against Sacramento. There could be more. In any event, I hope it is a good game, and not a blowout either way. One of these days, I hope to see CU black and gold under the leadership of Bill McCartney once again. That was one good program in those days, and I believe that he could take the Buffs to those heights again.

Good point. He would have had to sit a year to stay in FBS. Unless he graduated and is working on his Masters with a year of eligibility left.

So it sounds like the offense is coming around. It also seems like the QB battle is far from settled. Anyone attend the scrimmage? Any thoughts on how it went?

From the stats it looks like the ball was spread around quite well. The rushing doesn't look too impressive but I guess that is expected with a pass first mentality.

The one thing that jumped out at me was that Safron did not have "happy feet" and did not take off running at the first sign of pressure. He was much more in control and made good throws with authority. Sorenson looked good for a true freshman, but my thinking is, the starter is Safron.
The running game has no feature running back like Hilliard. There seems to be better quickness in the new backs, and there were some positive signs.
The new kicker made his extra points, had one field goal blocked (bad snap) and missed a 52 yard attempt, also because of a questionable snap. Ball was coming out low the first couple of extra points, but he adjusted and the last few were much better. Even coach Sperbeck was excited about the kicking game....
Thanks for the response CC, sounds like these players are coming along quite well. That’s good to hear about Safron. If he can find his comfort in the pocket and improve his accuracy there is no reason to feel he can’t step up and lead this offense.
Not good to hear about the long snapping problems, especially given that Bobak is going into his 3rd year. I hope those issues get cleaned up.
Any comments on the defense? How did the Dline look? What about the secondary?

The defense played solid. The D line played well against the run, but did not get a lot of pressure on the QB, even with the first team O line having 2 freshman redshirts on the line (Hanson and Stornaiuolo). The DB's had fair to good coverage and the two transfers were not part of the 1's. One touchdown that Sorenson threw was into very tight coverage and the receiver made a great catch. Actually the receivers played well, IMO.
They were working with 2 LS, and I don't recall who made the bad snaps.
Smith was great punting in warmups but couldn't get the ball to turn over in the scrimmage. The other punter only kicked once and had that kick partially blocked. Still some issues here....

I liked what I saw Saturday. Saffron looked pretty good in the pocket, he was way more comfortable than he was last season. He was accurate and moved around well, had a few scrambles for some good gains, 10+ yards.
