2012 NCAA Tournament

So it looks to be in Portland again in 2012. Neat.

However, I noticed that UO is the host school. It sure would be neat to see our logo on the hardwood at the Rose Garden as the host school Does anyone know exactly what the bid process is for hosting a regional as far as being the host institution? It's my understanding that the city actually does the bid, but I'm not sure of the responsibilities of the host school. I'm inclined to think that it's some sort of a financial responsibility.

UO is just a piece of a statewide power structure that brought the tournament here this year and packaged bids for future years. It is the only school in the state with enough money and fan support with the means necessary to become a host. If PSU had a 7,500 seat arena and was sponsored by all the major local businesses, it'd be a much more attractive candidate.

But did UO really bring the tournament here this year? The UO is very powerful in this state, but they most certainly did not bring about the removal of sports betting in Oregon that was the key to bringing the tournament to Portland. That was driven more by the Oregon Restaurant Association and the Portland Business Alliance, than the UO.

I guess my question was really about the details of the bidding process to the NCAA by the City. I would think that it wouldn't matter what division 1 school logo is out on that court, the City of Portland sees one thing, and that is revenue brought in by hosting a regional. However, your point about major local business sponsorship is a good one. If local business drives the City to bid, and the local business want the UO as the host, that's tough to beat...
