I was just looking at the recruiting being done by us, and the recruiting being done by the top 25 teams in the country, and the historically better programs in the Sky. I noticed a few things that I would like Famous Baller or others to shed insight on:

When I look at programs like Wofford, Georgia Southern, etc. they are always going after like 20 2,3 and 4 star kids, and all of the kids they are going after have well below 5.0 40 speed.

Why are we not going after more highly prized recruits- you know the sort of birds of a feather flock together principle?

Especially in the year we beat OSU, why are we not going after faster guys? I for one am tired of watching our guys get beat by speed.

Just a question.

Alot of this has to do with the budget and location of Sac State...Sac State only recruits in state, with that said most of the 3,4,5 star kids in CA get picked up by the D1-A schools.

The reason, according to Sac State, is that it costs more to recruit out of state as well as bring in out of state students.. This added costs affects their recruiting budget and amount of money they can put towards scholarships, etc...They will take out of state transfers as well as international students. International students have special programs and transfers tpyically aren't on scholarship the first year.

If we ever move up to D1A we will likely be able to recruit a few more states as well as get those 3,4 and 5 stars...or if I ever win the lotto and drop 2 more million into their yearly budget ;)

As an NCAA Div-1AA Team we are allowed up to 63 football scholarships. That's a total amount possible so if we have full funding (which many teams don’t) we can spend up to that. Because each scholarship is based on 1 “in state” tuition (plus room and board) that means out of state players simply cost too much. Of course any FCS level team that gets a chance to land a 5 star recruit usually considers paying the extra money.

The Sacramento area has enough football talent to supply a dozen Div-1A teams. The problem isn’t finding size and speed; it’s keeping the local talent home. As an up and coming FCS program with a much improved team and shinny new facilities we are now able to offer great local players a reason to stay home and play for the Hornets.

Our players are getting bigger and faster every year and if we can keep winning, get to the playoffs and continue filling Hornet stadium with fans; our recruiting should go to the next level.

That depends on WHO the out-of-state guy is. If we get a guy who can get at least a partial academic scholarship, that wouldn't count against the athletic schollie cap, would it?

SactoHornetAlum said:
Yes it does SH. It goes to a TOTAL of 63 scholarships.

You mean that academic scholarships count against the athletic scholarship cap? I'm not so sure about that. Maybe it's a football thing. I remember a kid in Stockton who gave up his schollie on the basketball team to walk on so the team could recruit a better kid. He got a tuition break since his dad was a professor (and perhaps ANOTHER break since his sister also attended, but I don't know that for sure). I know about that because his sister was my student advisor. Of course, this may not be a true comparison since tuition breaks might not be construed as a scholarship. The shift in sport may also be an issue.

Sorry I didn't read that you wrote academic. No those don't count, but those are so few and far between these days. No out of stater is going to come here on a partial academic scholarship. It would too cost prohibitive.

So giving a guy a full athletic schollie AND a partial academic schollie to wipe out the out-of-state differential as opposed to wasting a full AND partial athletic schoolie wouldn't work?

You're right, it's rare. But it could be a good way to go to bring in a good skill position player.

No but if a student athlete can qualify for some academic scholarship money, I believe that will free up athletic scholarship monies to be used on others. My sister is on a full track & XC ride at UofA. She gets some partial academic money with athletic monies filling out the rest of her full ride. I assume the left over athletic monies are allotted to another athlete. I think it all depends on what the athlete can qualify for, and if there is a competent staff to pull stings etc to cook the books the right way. I do not know of football scholarships can be split up in this manner.

I hope this helps:
Div-1A Football is allowed up to 85 scholarships which are FULL and not dividable.
Div-1AA Football is allowed 63 scholarships which can be full or divided into partial scholarships for multiple players. The roster limit is 105.
Div-2 Football is allowed up to 36 scholarships which also dividable.
Div-3 Football is NOT allowed to provide athletic scholarships but often provide full academic money to get players. It's funny how some players don't even qualify academically at one school but get full academic money from another.

A scholarship is essentially the cost for one (in state) student to attend that school for one year. Out of state fees go against the full amount allowed. I don't believe "academic money" counts against athletic limits but you can be sure the NCAA watches everything and every dollar. Also public institutions often have different rules and policies than private ones.

Nobody can ever really predict how successful an athlete will be but there are many who try. Athletic "star" ratings are based on lots of things like size, speed and intelligence, but there are also subjective opinions involved. Even a kid with a great rating out of HS is never a sure thing in college.

More important than a high rating (or even ability) is how a kid "fits". Athletes must fit the program and school (athletically, academically and socially) otherwise it's a big waste of time and money. One or two "highly" recruited athletes who leave a program can disrupt the entire season and/or cost a coach his job. Hornet coaches have done a fantastic job getting the right athletes for Sac State. These Northern California kids fit well here. They are humble, respectful and hard working, and together they will do great things this year and in the future.

K Edgar Castaneda San Francisco, California City College of San Francisco 5'7" 165
Interest in Sacramento State (medium)
========================================

I saw this guy live on saturday vs Butte. He warmed up well with some impressive kicks but he has poor mechanics which sure enough came back to haunt him. He had 3 low PATs blocked and he missed one short FG. He also made a few kicks but his KOs were ordinary and he doesn't look very athletic.

Diniz is bigger, stronger and has better mechanics than Castaneda. Plus our kicker has already gained valuable experience at the D-1AA level which will only add to his success rate.

Go Hornets!

Neither school site is claiming anything as yet....

I know a player and an assistant coach on the Folsom team. Next time I talk to them, I'll ask if they've heard anything about Carson giving a verbal to either program.
