2012 Recruiting Thread

On Pete's fete, Oden's odyssey, Vikings' in-state push and more

• Portland State’s recent football recruiting class is being hailed as top-notch, but what caught my attention was the number of athletes among the 16 high school signees who are from outside Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Only two – both from the Seattle area.

That has to be unprecedented in the Park Blocks. Tim Walsh and Pokey Allen relied on a number of players from California and Washington, and even Mouse Davis never had a near-full prep class of in-state and area kids.

Third-year coach Nigel Burton – who also landed seven ready-to-play transfers from JCs and four-year colleges – made a concerted effort to keep a lot of the good in-state players at home, and he has done that.

“We always want to recruit Oregon and Washington first, but this might have been the deepest in-state class ever,” Burton says. “We wanted to take advantage of that.”

Burton says the Vikings have four coaches scouting southern California and two in northern California, and they will continue with those responsibilities.

What will be fascinating to watch over the next few years is if the FCS Vikings can take it to the next level nationally with primarily homegrown talent.

Vikings Walen with Excitment (with audio, check it out)

Former UCLA great Mark Walen came by the studio to introduce Portland to the next generation of Walen football player in his son Zach Walen. Zach was a key part of the Lake Oswego championship team that finished as the best team in the state this season. Coming off that championship Zach had to choose what school to attend. After considering Dartmouth and Eastern Washington Zach decided to attend Portland State in a year that many call the best incoming class the Vikings have ever signed.

Zach and Chad discuss what the future of Viking football looks like over the next several years and how he can impact the team. Zach tells Chad of his goals outside of football and how they played a factor in choosing Portland State.

Mark Walen gives his thoughts on his son’s future in football and beyond. Mark also tells Chad about playing for Dallas as they ushered out the Tom Landry era and entered the Jimmy Johnson era. Mark has some interesting thoughts on the different coaching styles of the two legendary coaches.

Can Portland State become a premier football team in the Big Sky Conference? Will Zach and his class be the first in a long line of homegrown talent to play for the Vikings? Find out the answers to this and more and listen below.

Vikings Land Keizur

Vikings Pull In One More Big Recruit

At seasons end Cam Keizur was a hot prospect. The 6'5", 295 pound Offensive Linemen from West Linn was at the top of his game and impressing all who watched him.

And while many thought a school like Oregon State would step up they simply could not. Cam was left at signing day with a number of superb choices at the D-3 and D-2 level. But there were a host if invited walk on opportunities.

Certain that he could make things work out he planned on heading to OSU but the PSU Vikings were always in the front of his mind. That recruiting class and all they wanted to accomplish felt really attractive.

So tonight he let us know that he decided to stay closer to home and be a Viking.

"I Committed to PSU. It felt right," he offered. "I am Very excited to become a Viking!"

This has to have the Viks coaches absolutely dancing in the halls as this is a kid that can get it done on the field. A terrific blocker who anyone can see will only improve in a collegiate environment.

He figures to be very effective up front for the Viks and while we see him needing a year to really get going that applies to most all of these guys.

Congrats to PSU and to Cam Keizur. The best of the still eligible members of the 2012 Class is officially committed.

Suh-weet!! He is a big time recruit for the Viks. I feel like doing cart-wheels with the coaches. The key to success starts on the Offensive and Defensive Lines. The team that wins the Big Sky Conference usually always has the best O-Line.

That twitter address you gave didn't work for me, Forest. Who's this dude?

Weird, it works when I try it. I don't know anything about him personally, but the top of his twitter page reads:
