2013-14 Recruits

I don't have any details, but the board admin at the UOP board posted today that Sac stole a potential UOP hoops recruit by the name of Eric Stuteville.

Does anyone here know anything about him?

Looks like a decent big, UOP probably didn't think he was worth a schollie...

You could be right, K. According to your link, he had interest from UOP and Air Force as well, but his only other solid offer was Colgate. I can certainly understand his wanting to stay close to home (cross-country moves are tough on a young kid).

That said, with his height, he's kinda short for center. I'd picture him more as a PF. But perhaps he plays big. We'll see what the amazing Katz does with him. Katz must be tickled pink hoodwinking the school that used to be right down the street for him....

Not sure if serious...

Katz didnt hoodwink anyone. Hes been recruiting the kid for over a year. UOP has to get over the fact that they are not the only D1 school in the north valley. Stuteville is still growing and I talked to him tonight at the UCM game and he told me he was coming to Sac. Start tracking the Casa Robles high school games for more on him.

6-foot-10 is too small to play center in the Big Sky???

I'll take it.

From NorCal Preps:

Ask folks where Orangevale is and a number might guess somewhere in southern California, considering the citrus trees that populate, or use to populate the landscape down there. The answer is that Orangevale is 25 miles northeast of Sacramento. Now not that there is a groundswell as yet but the possibility of Orangevale being re-named Stuteville may be something on the horizon because Eric Stuteville is putting the town on the basketball map with his commitment to Sacramento State.

Averaging 17 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots during his junior season at Casa Roble High, Stuteville went out on the spring and summer circuit again as a Nor Cal Pharoah and averaged 20 points a game, with a couple of 30 point outbursts. That, his versatility and willingness to mix it up drew attention and Sacramento State took notice as did others.

Hornet Coach Brian Katz is entering the 2012-13 go-around facing the loss of senior big Konner Vetoto a year hence plus frontcourt juniors Ryan Okwudibonye, Joe Quigley and Jordan Salley the following season. Size was needed. Someone with four years of eligibility would really be a bonus

Enter Stuteville.

So why Katz and the Hornets?

"Sacramento State is the best place for me because of the way I felt about it," Stuteville said. "Coach Katz and his staff have seen me play a lot, coming to practices and open gyms. It's a pass first offense and playing with a guy sixth in the nation in assists [sophomore Dylan Garrity] will help."

Matt Fahey of the Pharoahs offered "Eric has so much upside. He's a late bloomer but he's hardnosed, tough mentally and likes to bang. It will be a great fit for him."

Stuteville now stands 6-foot-10 and is only 17. He's participated in organized basketball for just two years.

"My brother Mason first got into basketball," Stuteville explained. "That got me interested and I found out I really liked it."

What's fascinating is that neither brother was pushed or pressured into sports participation, even basketball, despite their size. Stuteville's father stands 6-foot-8 and played basketball at Langston University in Oklahoma and his mother, at 6-foot-2, holds some hoops records at California

Stuteville continued, "When I first started playing, I was more of a defensive guy, rebounding and blocking shots." Since then, he's added versatility. "I can shoot close to three-point range and post up. I'm a pretty good jumper with good timing."

It was especially in the late spring and summer where Stuteville measured both his advancement and prowess.

He offered, "When you play against guys in the summer tournaments, you have to be physical and stand your ground because everyone is good."

Academically, he sports a 3.65 overall grade point average, with a 4.0 this term. Stuteville is looking to major in kinesiology with the goal of becoming a physical therapist.

Eric's 6-foot-6 brother Mason is a promising 2014 prospect at Casa Roble.

So start getting those new town name signs ready.

Hearing good things about the guy, someone said he was one of the more underrated bigs in the West. Looks plenty big enough and can't argue with that production - 17 points, 7 rebs, 3 blocks per game.

Sounds like a good get. I’m not going to get excited about this recruit until he signs though. Plenty of time for a better program to come along a swoop him up.

Nice to be able to have a good player in the program like Garrity that can help get players like this one to come to Sac State with him stating that he would like to play with someone who was pass first and 6th in nation in assists.

Earle: Thank you for the article. Learning about new guys is great.

SD: I'll admit I'm biased, but you should have known that already. Katz was at Delta while I was there, and the Mustangs were spoiled in terms of hoops success with the tandem of Katz and Gina Johnson on the girls side (whom I pushed for the girls job at Sac at the same time Katz was hired).

Seriously, why do u say girls? That's high school. In college, it's women. Women's hoops, not girls. :ohno:

It's official. Stuteville signed with Sac State today:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento State men’s basketball program announced its first signee of the 2013-14 recruiting class with inking of 6-foot-10, 220-pound prep center Eric Stuteville, it was announced today by fifth-year head coach Brian Katz.

Stuteville, who is entering his fourth season at Casa Roble High School in Orangevale, will enroll as a freshman at Sacramento State next fall.

The Orangevale, Calif., native began playing organized basketball as a freshman at Casa Roble, and has improved his skill set each year. He became the varsity team’s starting center last season as a junior where he averaged 17.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots per game. He helped lead the Rams to a 14-13 overall record, a 6-4 mark in the Capital Valley Conference and an appearance in the Sac-Joaquin Div. III section playoffs.

I think he will be a good asset to the hornets. The kid is 6'10 and still growing, projected to be over 7'0. The kids got a decent verticle and definately plays big, he's strong and hard to move, I think he would be find at center but I think he will be able to adapt to whatever position he is put in.

Welcome to the board. I agree, he looks to be a big young player with some raw talent that will need to be developed. Unfortunately with what is graduating after this season, the Hornets will need him to contribute immediately.

Knowing the kid he will work hard and step up so he can contribute immediately. He's got an incredible work ethic and will do what needs to be done and what is asked of him.

According to early reports, the kid is talented enough, already, to play and contribute to the Hornets right now. Excited to see his growth over the next five years.
