2013 Recruiting

To me looks like Dave Humphers got busted, and Cole Hannum had to pay the price. The next question is: What advantages does Cole Hannum have with transfering to Nevada Union?

Shorter commute to school. His family relocated to Penn Valley during the Summer. Nevada Union is less than half the distance from Penn Valley than is Marysville HS.

I can't speak for anybody else, but I wouldn't leave my kids in a school that's 20+ miles away when I can send them to a much closer school that is academically comparable, if not better.

Justin Aysse, an ex-Marine who received an offer from SDSU during last year's recruiting period, has signed an LOI to Sac St. It's bitter sweet for me. The Aztecs are my favorite FBS team, and many of us were excited at the potential leadership he would add the team.

But I'm happy that he landed at Sac St, my favorite FCS team. Go Aysse! Go Hortnets!

Former or "ex" Marine?

Good point, Hornut. There's no such thing as an "ex" Marine....

And just as a point of clarification, while it started with the Marines, every branch adapted to it circa 1995: when speaking of members (or former members) of the US armed forces, the terms Marine, Sailor, Soldier, and Airman (i.e. member of the Air Force as opposed to the general job specialty in the Navy) are proper nouns, so they are all properly capitalized.

Aysse sounds like a really nice get.

Here's two more verbals according to Joe Davidson of the SacBee:
Vanderdoes will play for the North, along with Placer defensive end Stone Sander(Sacramento State), Nevada Union linebacker Tanner Vallejo (Boise State), Antelope defensive back Tyler Winston (San Jose State), Del Oro tailback Brandon Monroe (San Jose State) and Rio Americano tight end Jordan Vinson (Sac State).

According to the Orange County Register Sac State has a commit from Tesoro Safety Nick Crouch (6'1" 200).

Looks like Sac State's scheduling PAC-12 teams (and beating them helps I am sure) is paying off. Crouch told the OCR:

"I like their schedule because they always play Pac-12 teams," Crouch wrote in a text message of FCS Sacramento State.

Two more inked, a DB transfer from Hawai’i and a HS LB:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Defensive back Mike Sellers and linebacker Russell Smith have become the latest members of the 2013 Sacramento State football recruiting class, it was announced today. Both players will enroll at the University for the spring semester.

Some very nice additions so far this year, even with limited "scholies" this season... :D

At this level its hard to say exactly. Just basing it on the number of SR's leaving and a few that are not likely to return, I estimate around 15-18, but since D1AA can do partials (split up 63 between 85) I am not sure how many we will actually sign. My thought will be around 20, but how the money is distributed is anyones guess.

IMO - The whole signing day thing is just a "Rah Rah" thing for school and boosters...in reality about 60-65% of the kids sign make it through the program (quit, asked to leave, transfer, etc...) This isn't just Sac State, it's ALL schools. One thing good about signing JC players is that they are likely going to make it around for 2 more years without quiting or transfering....bad part about JC guys is its hard to break any bad habits or catch them up to a certain system in a year or 2.

I'm happy to hear about the addition of Russell Smith. I've coached in and followed the Sierra Football League for years and saw Smith play many times. He was one of the key players in Del Oro's 2011 run to the D2 State Bowl game. He was a 2-way starter - a RB that excelled in the receiving game (8 receiving TD's) and, of course, a LB. He's got good size and should be a great addition to the defense.

Looks like we picked up another committ...don't know much about him other than he is a DT from Del Campo. Decent size (6'2", 264) coming in and to build upon.

In addition to Kyle Evanski, Rivals.com is reporting that Cole Hannum also gave a verbal commitment. Hannum is the kid we discussed earlier in the thread. He was ruled ineligible this past season after transferring from Marysville to Nevada Union. Had the kid been able to play this year, he likely would have ended up with a couple FBS offers. Good get for the Hornets.

Jordan Robinson, from Ayala HS in Chino Hills commited. Had offers from other FCS schools...

"Ayala High School senior all-purpose football player Jordan Robinson committed to Sacramento State University on a full-ride scholarship, Ayala head coach Randy Reams announced Monday.

“After an official visit to Sacramento State this weekend, he made his decision,” Coach Reams said.

Robinson, who is being recruited as a running back, turned down offers from Montana, Montana State and South Dakota State, Coach Reams added........"

I coached against Kyle Evanski this year and he was the best linemen in our league. The kid is a stud hard worker if he was a little taller he would be a pac 12 kid. The kid from Christian Bros. committ to Cal and Kyle was better just not as tall. Great pick up for Sac. State.
