2013 Recruiting

The Hornets have received a verbal commit from Jordan Robinson, a 5'10" 180 LB running back from Ayala HS in SoCal. Robinson also had offers from Montana, Montana State, and North Dakota.

IMO - The whole signing day thing is just a "Rah Rah" thing for school and boosters...in reality about 60-65% of the kids sign make it through the program (quit, asked to leave, transfer, etc...) This isn't just Sac State, it's ALL schools. One thing good about signing JC players is that they are likely going to make it around for 2 more years without quiting or transfering....bad part about JC guys is its hard to break any bad habits or catch them up to a certain system in a year or 2.

You are right about the "Rah Rah". The key is recuiting kids, who will give you four good years. Sperbeck has improved on this subject, compared to the other HC we' ve had.

While the basics of what OG says is true, there's a bit of a caveat there. Not every JC recruit has used his RS year. If that's the case, we can bring him in, RS him, and then have two good years with him later. Or, we could put him on a modified Garrett White plan: play him a year, and if he's having problems that a RS year can help with, let him use his RS after his JR year, and then have one more year after.

One benefit of JC recruiting is that if you have a personnel issue in dire need of a quick fix, one top-notch JC guy can fit the bill. But one very large drawback is the fact that if you over-do it with the JCs, you're going to have more frequent turnover, which can cause chemistry problems, not to mention identity issues at the gate: if the fans don't recognize the players because they're roatating through so quick, they might not come. In that regard, having a good HS recruiting basis is key, using JCs to fill in holes here and there. Of course, if you find a worthy kid looking for a second chance (one of those 4-2-4 guys), you give him a chance. But in general, I say focus on HS recruiting, and use JCs to fill in holes.

Sac State get a commitment from Esperanza OL Andrew Admire (6'5" 260).

I think we agree, that drop down players and JC players are for quick fixes. This happens when a new coach comes in and needs to address problems. Now the question is, why have a Defensive Coordinator for 5 years, who still depends on drop down players and JC recruites? This tells me he can't devlop players or he's thinking more about his resume than building the program.

Huh? Aside from McMahon and the occasional starts by Washington, ALL of the other starters were HS recruits. It looks like Parker brings in the occasional FBS transfer to fill an immediate need and not a dependence on transfers.

According to the Fresno Bee Sac State has a commit from Buchanan DL Ben Sorensen

Looks like the Hornets picked up another good drop down in center John Wallace at 6' 4" 275 lbs. from UMass.

SacBee is reporting that the following players will sign tomorrow as well:

QB Daniel Kniffin, Rocklin HS
DE/TE Stone Sander, Placer HS
DE Viliami Umukuke, Monterey Trail HS
TE Jordan Vinson, Rio Americano HS

I'm really disappointed that I haven't seen any Lodi Flames on this list.

And I'm ESPECIALLY aggrieved that I'm not seeing Tokay kicker Bailey Smith, either....

Careful now, this government can legally drone attack its own citizens. Your post might label you a “terrorist” and you might catch a hellfire missile in your sleep.

A quick glance at the recruit class and it looks like the coaches were addressing the areas they needed to. Some immediate help (hopefully) at WR and DB, depth at OL, and some good size and youth at LB. Some FBS transfers, some JC transfers, and mostly HS recruits from all over the state.

Offense
  • • Quarterback: 1 (FR)
    • Offensive Line: 8 (1 JR, 1 SO, 6 FR)
    • Running Back: 1 (FR)
    • Tight End: 1 (FR)
    • Wide Receiver: 4 (3 JR, 1 FR)
Defense
  • • Defensive Line: 2 (FR)
    • Linebacker: 4 (1 JR, 3 FR)
    • Defensive Back: 5 (3 JR, 2 FR)

Interesting, Joe Davidson of the Bee reported that QB/WR Daniel Kniffin (Rocklin HS) was going to sign with the Hornets, however, I do not see him listed and Sperbeck has just said that signing day closed with 26 players. Rivals has Kniffin committed to Sacramento State as of yesterday. I wonder what happened.

Jihad Vercher is what happened.

If he develops as expected, then we have the heir apparent.

Overall, great class. We might not win alot of games, but Sperbeck can sure recruit.
