2013 Spring Football Practice

That article was obviously written over a week ago. Last week was the down week for the team with the coaches out recruiting. O-Live had already had a story about Long and his surgery (if memory serves) and they had a follow up to Steven's surgery on the day Ruder's story came out.

I would like to know what kind of control the writer has after he submits the story. When things become factually wrong, doesn't the writer or editor have an obligation to either pull the story completely or re-write it?

I heard that they were going to run a story next week on Neil Lomax and whether it's possible for him to be drafted into the NFL out of PSU.

in ian's article, he states that qb kb was injured last season. i don't remember that. man, i have
to stop drinking at the games

Do you mean km?

He played through a pretty bad knee injury if I recall.

Stop drinking at the games? Whoa, whoa, whoa, lets not do anything drastic here. :D

Vikings use spring football to tackle basics

http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/152449-vikings-use-spring-football-to-tackle-basics" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Like every coach in the history of college football, Portland State coach Nigel Burton has declared spring practice a success.

“It’s been a good spring,” Burton says. “We’ve seen our receiving corps step up, and defensively we’ve played solidly. I’m pleased.”

Heading into the 2013 spring, which concludes Saturday with the PSU game at Evergreen High at 1 p.m. in Vancouver, the thing that Burton wanted to see most from the Vikings was players stepping up and making plays.

“The biggest thing is that we wanted to make sure we developed our playmakers,” he says. “My biggest thing is I want playmakers. That’s why I’ve been pleased with the spring.

"We want big hits, we want guys who are physical and making diving catches and great throws and fumble recoveries. That’s what I’ve seen from the spring. That’s been really fun to watch.”

Of all the players, true sophomore quarterback Kieran McDonagh, a returning starter, will have the most pressure on him to make plays next season. While McDonagh says he has progressed physically, he says that where he has really grown from last season is as a leader.

“Last year, I didn’t have to step up too much in that way,” McDonagh says. “This year, it’s been put on my plate a little more. And I’ve been getting my timing down with some of the younger receivers because we lost five senior receivers.”

McDonagh says the Vikings have been focusing on offensive fundamentals as they prepare to enter next season with an almost entirely new receiving corps and many new additions on the offensive line.

“We’re getting some guys mixed in there,” he says. “There could be two redshirt freshmen on that first team O-line.”

Fundamentals were important for the Vikings' defense this spring, as well. Burton says he has tried to convince his defensive players to do a few things the right way rather than many things in just an average fashion.

“We have guys who are really buying into doing their job,” Burton says. “We scaled back this spring in terms of the installation. It seems to have paid off.”

Portland State’s strength last season was the offense, which averaged 34.8 points per game. But McDonagh wants to improve on that.

“We want to score a lot of points,” he says. “Last year, we did a good job of scoring a lot of points, but we needed to score more. That’s our main goal.

"We want to score above 40 points a game this year. Hopefully, we score that many in the spring game.”

Because the Vikings are dealing with injuries to both the offensive and defensive lines, Burton wasn't sure what the scoring format would be for the spring game, but “there will be some form of points,” he says. “It will still be a good experience for the fans and a great way to cap off a successful spring.”

McKenzie Stadium hosting Portland State spring football game

http://www.columbian.com/news/2013/may/17/mckenzie-stadium-hosting-portland-state-spring-foo/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A pair of local products will have a homecoming of sorts on Saturday at Portland State's spring football game.

The Vikings are heading north to McKenzie Stadium as they conclude their series of spring practices.

Festivities begin at 11 a.m. with a youth football clinic; registration forms can be found at GoViks.com. An alumni game is scheduled for noon, followed by the spring game at 1 p.m.

Admission is free.

For linebacker Brandon Brody-Heim, playing at McKenzie Stadium will feel familiar. As a graduate of Union High School, Brody-Heim played home games — and road games vs. other teams from Evergreen Public Schools — at the stadium located at Evergreen High School.

Brody-Heim appeared in six games as a freshman last year for the Vikings, playing on special teams and at linebacker while recording five tackles.

Quarterback Kieran McDonagh, meanwhile, is a graduate of Skyview High School. As a freshman last year, McDonagh won the job in fall camp and started all 11 games for the Vikings.

He passed for 2,187 yards and 14 touchdowns — and rushed for 406 yards and nine TDs — while guiding an offense that averaged 439 yards per game.

Preparing for its fourth season under coach Nigel Burton, Portland State is coming off a 3-8 season that included a 2-6 record in the Big Sky Conference.

The Vikings open their 2013 season Aug. 29 against Eastern Oregon at Jeld-Wen Field in downtown Portland.

Good turnout today. The results of signing local kids was really evident today. When local kids got into the game and made plays you could their family and friends cheering. Good thing our 'circle around the city of Portland' doesn't encompass Texas anymore. ;-) Good to get CCYF involved to get PSU on the radar of kids/families in Clark County. Not sure if they have been involved in years past when the spring game is in Oregon.

I know that with the spring, comes hope, and I'm pretty bad about heading over to the spring game year after year looking through my green Viking sunglasses. However, I think this was one of our better spring games in recent memory. It seemed more like it was down to business, but perhaps that's just because there wasn't music blaring. Here's some random thoughts about what I saw today.

- Secondary. This was the spot that I was most interested in seeing today since we were quite bad last year. Fite did not let me down, as he was flagged for PI on the very first play of the game. I'll give him a pass since the pass was way underthrown and it was one of those plays where the flag comes in since the receiver is trying to come back to the ball. He doesn't get a pass on the TD toss that went over him. Other than that, I thought that we were improved. In many cases, we were in position to make plays, and I didn't see as much of guys not even turning around to look for the ball as last year. Sibley looked good at the other corner spot, and our safety play seemed good.

- DL / Linebackers. Solid play today. There were quite a few big hits today, and the pocket seemed to close early and often. Not a lot of missed tackles, so guys are wrapping up.

- RBs. Will be a 2013 strength. Dwyer carried the ball quite a bit and looked good. Almost have a fullback look to him with the way he takes it to the defense. Otherwise, I thought Shaq and DJ looked good considering the play of the D line.

- WRs. I was just saying to myself that we hadn't had any drops like we have in spring games of years past, and then Jones drops a sure TD (great pass) and Graves tries to catch one with his pads. I did notice room for improvement on the receivers blocking for running and pass plays that come out of the backfield. Much work to do to replace what we lost due to graduation, but I think we have the talent to have this be a very strong position. Also, it was neat to see the offense go right back to Jones after that TD drop with the double pass. You could tell he was pretty excited after that TD, as he ended up sprinting up the sideline towards the bench. Made me chuckle.

- QBs. I think this is KM's job to lose. His experience from last year stands out and I really think that he puts the offense in the best position to run at a faster clip and get more plays per game, which is a goal for the coaching staff. Also, his arm is stronger than last year. There was some serious zip on his passes, and his short routes seemed to always be right on the receiver's hands. Heck, he went nine of his first nine for passing. Also, he didn't run as much, but when he did, he took the gain and headed for the sideline, rather than try to run over the defender. Not sure if this is at the request of the coaching staff, or if it's because it's the spring game, but that could reduce the chance of getting dinged up during the season. Ramirez was the two, but seemed to struggle in the first half, and was then the three in the second half. Seemed to hang onto the ball too long. He had a much better second half with some nice runs, and then went all Joe Montana with that TD pass. Flushed from pocket, then drops a perfect (and I mean perfect) pass just over the outstretched hands of the defender for six. Penn looked good today. I think that there was some comparisons to Connor Kavanaugh, and I can see that, as there were a few qb runs that were called for him. However, with Penn, I'm not afraid that some linebacker is going to break him in half since he's a bit more bulky. Like I said, I think this is KM's job to lose, but fall will sure be fun to watch.

- Special Teams. We should be fine with regards to punting. I think there were only two punts that were under 40 yards today, but I was impressed with the hang time today. I think Duyndam was a good punter, but at times he could hammer out couple of kicks that in no way resembled a punt. In watching Loomis and Kinsella at halftime, they were rather consistent with getting their kicks to spiral. With regards to placekicking, it's obvious that Brown has graduated. Gone are the ridiculous kicking demonstrations at the halftime of the spring game. I think we'll be ok, but I think our confidence in thinking our shot at a 50+ yard field goal this season is well short of last season.

General comments/questions.

- Snaps to the qb were a little off today. That ball needs to be right on the qb's hands. One was really bad, but fortunately bounced right back up to the qb.

- Plinke wasn't suited. Is he hurt, or is something else up?

- Was that Taylor (#54) that limped off of the field for the defense? He wasn't putting any weight on his left knee. I hope it isn't serious.

- It'll be interesting in fall camp to see if any of the signees will put themselves in position to get playing time in 2013.

Well, now on to the waiting period for fall camp.

I thought the venue of Evergreen/McKenzie was super for the spring game. I know they will like to move it around, but I would go to Evergreen every year for sure. Didn't expect a covered stands! Nice day as well as the weather held off. Thought this was really well played (I remember a 2008 spring game that was a near fiasco of bad play). Lots of people looked sharp. What's up with Halverson? Wasn't on my roster. Who was the 17 playing corner, also not on my roster. The two JC linebackers (#7, #33) looked solid, altho not Sluss-like at present. Lots of big hits from all the LBs (Stant, etc). KM looked in the groove. Penn full of potential. Ramirez TD pass was sweet. Those who stayed home missed a fine day of PSU football. See you all in late August on Thursday night!

'Others who didn't play Saturday due to injuries are: LB Zach Walen, TE Hayden Plinke, LB Jaycob Shoemaker, DT Zack Ka'ahanui and DT Junior Alexis.'

There you have it, Plinke was hurt.

I think both Penn and KM looked good today. It will be sad for us not to find a spot to play Penn until his senior season if KM continues to be the #1.

You bring up an excellent point.

No sense in letting him waste away on the bench.

What about the Thomas Carter route? Logjam at QB pushed him to a slot back position. He's been great there.

Also, who's to say that Penn doesn't develop into the starting QB in 2014.

I have been very pro KM, I thought after last fall he was the right choice to play QB for that team. I'm not saying that Penn couldn't compete for the starting role, but unless KM takes a step back, I'm not sure that the coaches would make that change. However, yesterday I did see a mobility in Penn that you may not get with KM though obviously KM had good success passing the ball and he can still flat run over guys. I'm no expert, but if I had to choose between the two I would probably say that Penn is closer to the prototypical Pistol QB based on build and speed. It would seem they would be giving Penn more snaps than the 3 if they intend to have him some day compete against KM for the job.

Halverson left the team early in the spring. #17 is Julian Cruell who has been impressive as a cornerback after playing RB the last 2 years.

I think KM is great running north-south but can't compare with Penn who can move laterally east-west in addition to north-south. I think they should seriously consider putting Penn at QB and moving KM to another position. KM is a great football player and can move to another position more easily then Penn.

Crap. Halverson left? What happened?

Reading some of these comments, I have to wonder if some of you either didn't attend the spring game or tailgated too hard prior to the game because it was pretty obvious to me, others around me, and even some players I talked to after the game who the QB of this team is.

Let me start by saying that each QB had their moments, but McDonagh easily had the most. The offense's pace, his arm strength, accuracy, and quick decision making really stood out from the rest. (KM 12/14 131 yards, Colin 6/13 59 yards Penn 4/9 32 yards )

I thought Ramirez's touchdown pass was sweet, but he struggled with his accuracy. I recall a couple of open crossing routes he missed.

Penn showed good mobility, but I don't understand the forum calling for him to start. He is no where near the passer McDonagh and Ramirez are. What I saw from his performance on Saturday was while Penn is mobile, he has no comfort in the pocket. He was bailing from the pocket when he didn't have to (he might be too short to see and has never developed pocket presence). Sometimes it's a gain but he also ran into his lineman for a sack and almost got caught for a safety (the blitzer pulled up). He was inconsistent with his passes as well. It's unfortunate his best pass was dropped, but he looked like he put everything he could on that ball. KM and even Ramirez look effortless when they throw. Remember the coaches see every practice and film every practice the players receive grades, who is the 1, 2 or 3 is not random.

I really think that this forum overrates speed. KM is no slouch, he still gained over 400 yards on the ground last season. The difference is that KM buys time with his legs and keeps his eyes down field to hit a receiver. Penn looks at his first option and if it's not there, he's running. KM, though not as shifty, is our best dual threat QB (because his ability to throw and read a defense) and maybe even one of the top dual threat QBs in the Big Sky.

@VikThunderous
Are you crazy? You want to convert our best quarterback to another position for our third string QB? C'mon now... If the only thing Penn has an advantage over Kieran and Colin is, is his speed or athleticism, convert him to a position where that can always be on display, I don't know…. maybe like slot receiver as Marty suggested or DB? BTW --- the Pistol offense is not designed to have your QB run all the time, it is not the spread or the option you need a QB who can read defenses and make throws. Hate to say it but Kavanaugh ran because that’s what he could do, and he did it well. It is a different Big Sky now!!

All I know is if I'm a coach on another Big Sky team or a fan of another team, I have to be pretty stoked that there is a QB competition at PSU after they had a true freshman take the lumps last year for experience and was still able to garner recognition as one of the best freshman in the country. It really is puzzling, especially after the performance he put on during the Spring Game.

The biggest things to take away from the spring game were: a revitalized, active and aggressive defense—lots of plays in the backfield and the other was Roston Tatum possibly developing into a bigtime playmaker on the outside. No one could cover him. The knock has been his hands, but those looked fine on Saturday.

Looks like he's headed to SMU.
