2013 Week 1: Sac State @ San Jose State

I completely understand the disappointment on the performance, but is anyone really that surprised? The one constant over the last few years is the "inconsistency" on one side of the ball. I wouldn't be shocked if the offense put up 24 points next week but the defense will give up 50. This has all the signs of a 5-7 team.

As for the QB, as bad as the performance was I would rather not burn the redshirt year for Vercher. Vercher has all the skills to be a real stud for the Hornets. This may be a rough year but in the long term I think it's best for the Hornet program.

I'm honestly not surprised at all. I always get hopeful and my blessed wife is always so patient with me, yelling and screaming at the computer, or at the game in-person. I think the fact that we've pretty much always been mediocre is what keeps me coming back for more punishment.

Who wants to be a freaking Alabama fan? Congratulations, your team is always awesome... BORING. I get some sort of sick satisfaction out of eeking out a win over an FCS ranked Cal Poly team, only to be kicked square in the junk by my team at the end of the season, watching them fumble punts, throw double reverse interceptions, and whizz down their collective legs at the most backbreaking times.

Such is life as a Hornet fan.

I expected us to start 0-2, but what made life so painful last night was the simple mistakes, and the SAME F-UPs we saw last season. Safron has zero touch, he makes bad decisions, and doesn't know how to count (see playclock issues). Playcalling is sketchy; I love watching our shifty RBs run into brick walls at the goal line over and over again. Guess what y'all our Special Teams unit is collectively terrible as well! Our new long snapper, McDade as the holder, and Aguillar all looked completely out of sorts; Jimmy doesn't like.

Anyways, we'll get pasted 55-7 next week and then we have to regroup for a freaking good Southern Oregon team and then our FCS schedule.

Welcome to he// Hornet fans!

Wow, Kadeezy, I swear I could have written this same exact thing, especially the part about it easy being an Alabama fan...I swear I have a masochistic side that always brings me back to Hornet football.

I say we just do what Montana State did with Denarius McGhee, Eastern W. with Adams last year, and the Niners with Kaep...Hell, even Montana with Jordy Johnson before he **allegedly** raped a girl...Throw the most talented guy out there regardless if he's a freshman or too young and let him play. Put Vercher in and let's build our program around him

I probably still had your thoughts on my mind! We agree on the Vercher thing too.

I predict Safron gets trounced at ASU, then the coaches #FreeVercher starting with the SOU game...

Lets not put all the blame on safron! He put some air under his balls, but lets not act like we didnt know that was gonna happen, the offensive play calling again is too conservative and is not playin to his strengths. Short out routes were open all day and we rarely ran them. SJSU blitz on almost every play and we ran 0 slant routes across the middle. If you were out at the scrimage you would know Vercher cannot see over the line, and he is noooo Russel Wilson!! Saffron is our best bet!

What I learned from this game

Odiase and Kendall are going to be one of the best secondary duos in the Big Sky!!

The Oline is going to be an issue (next week Sutton is going to be a handful)

The d line gives no pressure and when they do cannot finish in the backfield

Offensive play calling is shit again

Special teams is goin to hurt us!

Really excited to see how we'll the secondary is going to be this year tho!!!

My biggest concern was that after poor snaps/holds, those doing the snapping and holding were standing on the sidelines with their hands in their pockets instead of working to get it right for the next attempt...which never came.

First off, Kadeezy if the kind of kick you are referring to here is the same as the field goal attempts last night, I say
the junk wins that battle!

Second, Our defense did a heck of a job last night especially 2nd half. I watched Fales flail Bowling Green last year and our D stepped up.

I think the offense improves from here. Everyone here knows what we had in Saffron, the offense is predominantly what we had last year, I think we will do ok in conference.

SJSU is picked 3rd in MWC so they are not NMSU or CO. I am withholding judgement for at least a month...or next week....

McDade was holding? I couldn't see who it was but Vercher was holding in the scrimmages. Makes no sense to change it up for the regular season if that is in fact the case.

I agree whole heartedly. WTF!

efin, efin'n efin, efin, GD, efin, efin'n efin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FYI, Game night, I was a good Dad and didn't yell, scream, or cuss. Baby sleep undisturbed. My wife actually thought the Hornets won unitl I told her they didn't today.

I really don't understand how the Horents have regressed. Wait, yes I do, put in another QB that can make plays.

If these are pre-season, "body bag games," then let's let someone else show what they have.

Thank you for listening and maybe understaning.

Hornets looked like they were playing a scrimmage.
No fire, no killer instinct, no scoring? WTF!!

We can't score 3pts with a QB that has been in the system three years?!?

Play calling sucked too, how many times does our shifty RB's have to run into a brick wall through the tackles? Go outside for once.

Why does everyone expect a different outcome with the same coaches?

I'm a little more concerned with the coaching as opposed to individual play. I've watched a disturbing trend with Sperbeck going for it on 4th down when it serves no purpose. Sometimes getting those first points on the board relieves some pressure on the team. Or if your not in field goal range, play a field position game. There is a difference between being aggressive and being foolish. If you want to blame it on the kicking game, then make finding a kicking game a priority. No excuse to cost your team wins or opportunities because you won't properly address field goal kicking.

Turnovers are coaching issues as well. Address it.

Yeah not sure about the play calling, but those head scratcher decisions have always been there with Sperbeck. I thought he should have sent in the FG unit on those 2 late drives as getting some points on the board would at least give the offense and FG unit some confidence (assuming they would have made the chip shot FGs).

We all wanted better results but there is no reason to hit the panic button after week 1. SJSU was a top 25 team last season and they returned a lot. Next weeks game at ASU will be worse than Thursday night, but there still won’t be a reason to panic unless the offense has a total no show. We are griping about the lack of scoring, but even if the Hornets connected on their opportunities and scored the 20 points that were left on the field, we would then be complaining about how close we were to a win and how we never pull out the close games. Everyone take a deep breath, 11 games to go.

I don't think that the Hornets looked like they were playing a scrimmage. From where I was sitting in the stadium it looked like they were fired up throughout the game and played hard. The defense played well, had a few hits on Fales early and he looked like he was rushing his passes after that. The DBs were great and we stuffed their running game. The defense played well enough for us to win if the offense had taken advantage of the opportunities they had. The offense looked out of sync and confused most of the game.
Safron's clock management was terrible, it ran out twice and had to be saved two other times with late time outs. I don't know what was going on, if the San Jose defense was doing something to confuse Safron or what. Safron was under a lot of pressure all night. There was also was one play when we had 12 men on the field, these types of miscommunication shouldn't be happening at this level, first game or not.
The playcalling was also very questionable, why continually try bouncing our 170lb RBs off the SJ defense when it wasn't working? With such a high powered OC as Peterson calling the plays couldn't he be a little more creative especially in the red zone? And the kicking game, we already are working with a freshman long snapper, and a new kicker, why use a unpracticed holder ? My final rant of the day is that the team left campus about 12:30 on game day. Why not travel the night before, settle in and focus on the game?
I hope these issues can be solved before Arizona State or it could get really ugly.

On a good note the Booster Bus trip was a blast!

GCM goes over the top with his negativity…but given many years of Hornet fandom one can’t really blame him. The Hornets gave it their all and came to play. The effort was there, the execution was not.

I too was shocked to hear the team left that late to SJ. They literally only got there a few hours before kickoff, very poor planning imo. Not sure if that is because SJSU has nowhere to hold the players for a few hours (I doubt it) or just a flat out bust in the logistics by whoever sets the travel schedule (Sperbeck I assume). :ohno:

Idk, if you are close enough to bus, I don't see wasting money with a hotel, etc. If you are good team, you will win no matter when you travel. In a lot of the other sports, they play the day of travel.

I don't think a hotel is needed, but nothing wrong with hitting the road early and letting the players have plenty of time to get settled and do their regular pregame routines. Who knows, maybe they did have plenty of time with the schedule they were on.

When I was at UOP, the team got hotels wherever they were, except at home. When I was on campus at Sac, it was the same way. You HAVE to have a hotel on the road to get minds focused on the game. If we don't have the $$ to get hotel rooms for the guys when we have Pac-12 money about to come in, fire the bean counter....

The football team gets put up in a local hotel even before home games, so i dont see why they would change that for this specific game. Lounging in a hotel room all day and riding in a bus do completely different things to your legs.

The advantage of traveling the day before, having the opportunity to have a light practice in the stadium, that afternoon, meet and getting a good night's sleep in a hotel without distractions seems like a no brainer.
