2013

i see the defensive line as being our biggest need. is the younger pulu going to play lb or end, and is the delgado kid going to see the field next season? Would be good to get a transfer or teo at lb and dt.
Keep in mind, we have a starting DE from 2011 back in Anthony Larry. He'll be a welcome addition. With him and Evan Day, who impresses me more every game with his speed and nose for the ball, we look pretty good at DE. Also, I liked the speed of Pugsley subbing in. He runs a 4.5 at 6-3 240lbs and showed it off in the SHSU game. That's gonna help offset the loss of Ceja's speed. With two All-Big Sky tackles coming back, we have a pretty good base on the D Line.

Two very good points, Dozy. You must be more keely aware of how the kids are doing... Is Larry still in school and working on getting eligible? One of Eastern's coaches said they thought he might have been the most talented defender on the team last Spring.

Pugsley is an interesting guy. I thought he was mostly subbing in as a DT? Could've been wrong about that. I remember him improving a lot through the season. He started the year as a bit of an afterthought but seemed to become more of an impact player as the year went on. He made a couple of big plays against Cal Poly as I remember where he flat blew up the offense.

And Larry also solves the issue I'd like addressed which is getting a true strongsider back as a DE. The Dude has the ability to contain and fight off a block or just speed rush... that kind of versatility is what Clowney brings in the SEC and you very seldom see at the FCS level.

Why'd ya delete my post? Is Screamin' Beagle gettin' a little sensitive?

I deleted it. We don't take too kindly to trolls on here, especially BIZUN trolls. And anyway, shouldn't you be trolling Sam Houston's board?

If Larry were back for 2013 that would be great news.

Like I said, 4-7 with that schedule even in the Big Fluffy!

Question--- obviously, I don't get to watch a lot of NDSU games as FCS gets such bad national coverage. Is North Dakota State primarily a cover 3 team? I saw a lot of what looked like 1 and 3 coverages against GA Southern, but it was hard to tell which was which because no one from GSU ever crossed the field.

I was really impressed with how the Bison ran their defense in that game... as evidenced by an earlier post in this same thread.

Puglsey played a lot on our 3rd and longs when we'd drop the tackles out and basically have three DE's rushing and add an extra DB or LB, or, we'd drop one tackle and have four rushing with three of those being DE's.

How many returning starters does EWU have in 2013?
Offense: The Eagles lose three present or former All-Americans in wide receivers Nicholas Edwards and Greg Herd and right tackle Will Post. The other eight starters return. Quarterbacks Kyle Padron and Vernon Adams will continue to compete for the starting position. The running back corps will be even deeper if Mario Brown (redshirt) and Jordan Talley (concussion) return.

Wide receiver Brandon Kaufman, who set an FCS record for single-season yardage with 1,850, is expected to return, along with Ashton Clark (650 yards), Shaquille Hill, Daniel Hill and several redshirts.

Defense and special teams: Despite the departure of six starters, All-American place kicker Jimmy Pavel and long snapper Jake Potter, the Eagles return talent. The departures of starting linemen Jerry Ceja, Evan Cook and Paul Ena are partly offset by the eight- to 10-deep rotation employed all season. Jeff Minnerly will be missed at safety, but the other three spots are intact.

The biggest losses are at linebacker. Not only do the Eagles lose starters Zach Johnson (an All-American in 2010) and Tyler Washburn, they will be without super-sub Grant Williams and backups Chase King and Rusty Haehl.

Ronnie Hamlin, easily the team’s leading tackler with 136, is back at the strong inside position; J.C. Agen and Cody McCarthy also are expected to return.
