2014 Big Sky Tournament Watch

PGP this thread is dedicated to you. :) ;)
After tonight every BSC team will have 4 games left.

PSU is at EWU tonight. An EWU win joins them with the Hornets, Montana, and UND for a 4 way tie for 3rd place. A PSU win joins them with EWU, MSU, and NAU for a 4 way tie for 6th place.

SUU has been out of the running a very long time ago but they are at least taking all the loss records away from us in the process.

Weber has a 2 game lead on UNC for the regular season crown. The Hornets are on the road this Thursday at their house. Weber will no doubt be looking to avenge that epic loss earlier in the season.

ISU is still in the hunt at 7-9. They will be fighting for their tournament lives when the Hornets roll into Pocatello this Saturday.

What do we want to happen this week?
I guess everyone has a different idea. My thinking is that we want as many of the 8-8 teams to lose as possible. Obviously if we can split our remaining games or better it makes no difference, but the more 8-8 teams that lose only helps our chances at a BSCT berth and tournament seed ranking. Thoughts?

bigskybball.com rundown: http://www.bigskybball.com/2014/02/big-sky-standings-breakdown.html

Thanks for the info SD. After looking at BigSky Basketball and the tie breaker procedure I believe if we beat the Montanas next week at home there is no way we can miss the tourney. I still think we can beat Weber and Idaho at their places. I especially want to quiet down the Weber fans who think we needed
Garrity's 75 footer to beat them. I unfortunately won't be able to watch the feed on that game because I'll be at the UOP vs Gonzaga game.

Looks like we got some help tonight from Portland St. They defeated EWU by a score of 87-76. That leaves them both at 8-8.

Ignore the WSU fans. Apparently one of them thinks Garrity didn't get that shot off in time which the replay clearly shows that he did.

PSU knocks off EWU to make the 8-8 log jam even greater. Caught the 2nd half, PSU was shooting lights out form beyond the arc and was near flawless at the charity stripe. Both of these teams head to UND/UNC.

EDIT: pgp beat me to the punch.

Hey guys, if you're interested, I wrote up a long breakdown on the Hornets, and how they have turned their season around - http://www.bigskybball.com/2014/02/how-did-sacramento-state-turn-their.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Good write up Jon. I agree that the home stretch had a lot to do with the swing, however this teams has looked the best it has even been under Katz. I hope this program can see a bit of an upswing in coming years and that this is not just a blip on the radar screen.

Tonight’s Action:

Sac (9-7) @ WSU (12-4): I have a hard time seeing a win for us here but anything can happen. We really need to see this team be competitive against the top team in the road (and the likely location of the BSCT). A blowout loss raises concerns imo.

NAU (8-8) @ ISU (7-9): ISU is in desperation mode and NAU is on a 3 game skid. An ISU win helps our cause but also will have them completely amped for us when we roll into town on Saturday. Not sure if I’d rather have an NAU loss instead of a devastated ISU come Saturday night.

PSU (8-8) @ UND (9-7): UND is in the hunt for a top seed so I think they take care of business tonight. A PSU loss helps us secure a BSCT berth while a UND loss keeps them on par with us in the standings.

EWU (8-8) @ UNC (10-6): UNC is looking to lock up the 2nd seed so I think they pour it on EWU tonight. An EWU loss helps us secure a BSCT berth while a UNC loss opens up the 2 seed to the teams currently tied in 3rd place (us included).

SUU (0-16) @ MSU (8-8): As comical as an SUU win would be here I doubt this team wins a BSC game this season.

UM (9-7): Off until Saturday.

Glad your taking a shot at figuring this mess out, thanks. The picture should become a lot clearer after tonite. The Hornets can do it. We just have to believe.

Recap of last night’s action:

79-67 WSU (13-4) over Sac State (9-8). Hornets hung tough and stayed within striking range until the final minutes. A respectable performance by the Hornets (D could have been better) as the only better outcome would have been a win. WSU unofficially seals up a share of the BSC title with the win and the Hornets are now in 4 way tie for 5th place. Hornets still control their own destiny.

66-65 NAU (9-8) over ISU (7-10). A stupid foul in the backcout by ISU gave NAU the game in the closing seconds. ISU is all but out with the crushing loss and NAU stays in the fray for the final BSCT spots.

80-66 EWU (9-8) over UNC (10-7). The massive beatdown by EWU did the Hornets no good as EWU is alive and well and has their sights set on a BSCT spot. UNC lost some ground for the 2 seed with the embarrassing home loss. The UNC loss also guaranteed WSU a share of the regular season crown.

83-73 UND (10-7) over PSU (8-9). UND was the only help the Hornets got last night as PSU falls behind the pack for the final BSCT spots. UND has a shot at the 2 seed with the UNC loss.

77-72 MSU (9-8) over SUU (0-17). MSU narrowly avoided an embarrassing home loss. Had SUU been competent enough to make their freebees the Hornets would have gotten a nice gift via an MSU loss.

Saturday’s action:

Sac State (9-8) @ ISU (7-10): ISU is essentially relegated to play the role of spoiler as they need a ton of help to get a BSCT spot. With the Hornets getting no help by means of some of the 8 win teams faltering, I have this as a must win for the Hornets. A loss here and it’s panic time for Hornet fans.

NAU (9-8) @ WSU (13-4): WSU can official seal sole possession of the conference crown and secure home court advantage with a win. Hornets are cheering for WSU as a NAU loss at worst keeps them on par with the Hornets for a final BSCT spot.

EWU (9-8) @ UND (10-7): UND still has its sights set on a 2 seed and face an EWU team coming in off a huge win. The Hornets need a UND win to keep EWU from getting the inside track on a BSCT berth.

PSU (8-9) @ UNC (10-7): PSU has fallen a bit behind and are in desperation mode. UNC will be fighting for a 2 seed. A UNC win pretty much eliminates PSU from BSCT contention, so the Hornets will be UNC fans this weekend.

SUU (0-17) @ UM (9-7): UM is looking to enter the battle for the 2 seed, which they should with a win here. A UM loss would help the Hornets but it is highly unlikely.

MSU (9-8): Off until Monday when they play at UM.

Great breakdown. I agree we need the win Saturday but it's not quite a MUST win. I just watched the replay of the game last night and it looked to me like we got killed on the boards and (as usual) Weber shot 15 more free throws making 11 of those. I loved Stuteville's game last night as he continues to get better by the day. We need Dylan to find his shot again but I don't see a problem in that happening. Keep believing....

With North Dakota's win over Eastern today, Idaho State now controls its own destiny as far as getting into the tournament -- win out, and ISU is in by virtue of having head to head tiebreakers with both Portland and EWU. If ISU wins two of three and Montana State loses all three of its games next week, ISU would also get in. Neither of these options is going to be easy, but it all starts tonight.

I didn’t watch any games yesterday, and from the looks of things I’m glad I didn’t.

Last night’s action:

80-67 Sac State (9-9) falls at ISU (8-10): Thanks to other results this was a must win game that the Hornets lost…which is why I had this as a must win to begin with. Garrity had a great game but it looks like things are slipping away from the Hornets…as usual.

73-71 NAU (10-8) over WSU (13-5): This win by NAU all but guarantees them a BSCT berth. Weber continues to falter as they head into the BSCT. Other results guaranteed that the BSCT will be in Ogden.

77-68 PSU (9-9) over UNC (10-8): UNC has completely imploded in the closing weeks of the regular season. This win allows PSU to remain tied with the Hornets in the standings as the teams head into the final 2 games of play.

69-67 EWU (9-9) falls at UND (11-7): This was the only help the Hornets got yesterday. UND jumps UNC in pursuit of the 2 seed. EWU stays tied with the 9-9 log jam.

82-54 UM (10-7) over SUU (0-18): UM rolled to an easy victory as they eye the 2 seed.

Monday’s Action:

MSU (9-8) @ UM (10-7). The Hornets desperately need a UM win to stay tied with MSU in the standings. An MSU win puts them in great shape for a BSCT berth, a UM win puts them in the running for the 2 seed.

IMO it’s panic time for Hornet fans. We play the Montana’s this week and we will need some help in other games as I have the UM game as a loss. The Hornets went from the drivers seat to possibly being on the outside looking in after last week’s results.

Finally got some help.......Montana beats Montana St. 53-50
Yeah…finally. Was checking the game on my phone every so often, was kind of surprised UM only won by 3. MSU will face NAU and then the Hornets. MSU losing out is probably our ticket to the BSCT. We will need either PSU or EWU to do no better than 1 win this week in that scenario as well. Damn this is going to be a close finish…too close… :|

There is a newer post on BigSkyBball that breaks it down further. Looks like one win could get us in but two is definitely in. We hold our fate in our own hands at home.

Newer bigskybball breakdown: http://www.bigskybball.com/2014/03/breakdown-of-race-for-final-spots.html

Tonight's action:

94-90 UND (12-7) knocks off UNC (10-9) at home. Not long ago UNC was in contention for the conference crown, their 4 game skid now finds them 1 win above the 9-9 morass with their final game at SUU on Saturday. UND takes a slight edge on UM for the 2 spot heading into the final weekend. UND closes the season at SUU on Thursday.

Thursday's action:

UM (11-7) @ Sac State (9-9): UM needs a win to keep pace with UND for the 2 seed. UM would win tie breakers if they finish the season knotted up with UND. The Hornets need to dig deep in this one as a BSCT berth is on the line and they control their own destiny heading into this game. Anything is possible but I am not too confident the Hornets will win this one.

MSU (9-9) @ NAU (10-8): NAU can officially lock their BSCT berth with a win here and conversely put MSU on the brink of disaster. Hornets are cheering for NAU here.

WSU (13-5) @ PSU (9-9): The BSCT is in Ogden but they can claim sole possession of the BSC crown with a win here. PSU is fighting for their BSCT lives. The Hornets are cheering for WSU in this one.

ISU (8-10) @ EWU (9-9): ISU needs to win out and needs a lot of help but their BSCT hopes are still alive. EWU is fighting for a final BSCT berth. Hornets can flip a coin on who to cheer for here. ISU has a win over WSU to balance out the Hornet win over WSU in a tie-breaker scenario. Toss up as far as who to cheer for, interested to see if anyone has any thoughts on who to pull for.

UND (12-7) @ SUU (0-18): UND needs a UM loss and to close the season out with a win to secure the 2 seed. This game is meaningless for Hornets...although cheering for UND further distances SUU's BSC losing streak record from ours.

UNC (10-9): Off. They close out at SUU on Saturday.

Unpack those bags PGP, the Hornets aren’t going anywhere.

Everything that could have gone wrong pretty much did. Hornets no-showed in probably the most important game of the year. WSU shat themselves and gave PSU a win. EWU knocked off ISU and the only help Sac got was a NAU win over MSU…unfortunately the Hornets are now on the outside looking in along side MSU.

I think the only chance we got is for a win against MSU coupled with an EWU loss at ISU. Well PGP this is why not many Hornet fans got their hopes up during the run earlier in the season (which is now obviously just an outlier under the Katz tenure). Deep down we all knew that somehow it would come to this.

I don't think it's over yet...........If we beat MSU and EWU loses to Weber I think we get the tiebreaker over EWU and get the 7th spot. I could be wrong but I think that is the way it lays out.
