2014 Recruiting Thread

Burton lost this team by lying to players, not being fair to all players and constantly berating some guys and not others. He has benched kids because he doesn't like what they have to say, not given kids like Kasey Kloss a scholarship and literally told him it's because he is from Lake Oswego and doesn't need the money.

When you don't treat kids with respect and honor what they are doing for you they really don't care much about you as a coach. I've heard from several kids that were suppose to be turning the team around by now that Burton and Hill constantly lie and say very inappropriate things to kids starting and bench. They think this coaching staff is a joke.

I heard at least 6 to 10 kids from the 2012 class are asking for their release as soon as this season ends. They all loved football but say at this point with this staff it is the worst thing in their life. Some are trying to transfer to other big sky schools and some are just done with it. They say Burton and staff sucked the joy of football from their life.

Portland State won't be getting the talented local kids after this happens for years to come and that will be Burtons legacy.

Kloss should be on scholly. No starter should have to pay his own way regardless of where his parents live.

Let's hope your predictions do not come to pass.

Whalen has been given his full release. Sadly it has begun. I wish it weren't so but when young men can't trust you and they are good young men that don't need the money from a scholarship they tend to get far away from you.

Trust is what great teams are built on. Trusting your teammates and trusting your coaches is vital to a program. When coaches are lying to players the trust tends to break down and the players tend to question just about everything a coach does from that point on.

Central Catholic quarterback Aidan Wilder commits to Portland State

Central Catholic senior quarterback Aidan Wilder, a fourth-year starter for the top-ranked Rams, has committed to Portland State.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Wilder called Vikings coach Nigel Burton on Saturday to accept the scholarship offer.

“It’s close to home, close to my family,” Wilder said. “They were the first ones to offer me, first ones to really believe in me. So I just figured that alone was enough to make me decide.”

Wilder has been receiving interest from other Football Championship Subdivision programs but Portland State is the only one to make an offer.

“I’m still getting interest,” Wilder said. “There are some teams looking at me. I think I’m going to get a couple more offers from UC Davis and Cal Poly. And some other Big Sky teams are talking to me.

“But Portland State was the first one. And they offered me as a quarterback, which is my first love. I’ve played quarterback since I was in the third grade. I want to continue that.”

Wilder has completed 83 of 132 passes for 1,198 yards and 15 touchdowns with four interceptions for Central Catholic (8-0, 4-0 Mt. Hood Conference). He also has rushed for six touchdowns.

As a junior, he threw for 2,062 yards and 19 touchdowns with five interceptions and ran for 517 yards and eight scores.

Nice pickup.

Josh Brown Calls The Vikings Home

Sunset High School is home to a very good football team this season and the Apollos are getting ready to move on into the playoffs for the second season. Led by some really tough Seniors the boys in Purple are formidable and are going to take a solid shot at proceeding deep into the playoffs.

One of the top athletes in the Region this year is Josh Brown who is a Senior for Sunset. The 6’5″- 250 lb Tight End and Defensive End also is being used as a tackle on the offensive line and making his presence known all over the field. The big man is impressive finishing blocks, pressuring QB’s, and forcing running backs inside on plays designed to go wide.

Josh was sitting on a nice offer from Northern Colorado and then landed a PSU offer this Summer which we were there to watch happen. Pretty cool. About 3 months has past and Brown has decided to take Coach Burton up on his offer.

“I am going to PSU for College. And I could not be happier,” said Brown who called us last night.

He did not have a lot more to say other then his Mom was really happy as she can see his brothers play youth and High School ball next Fall and still see his home games! Family is a big deal at the Brown household and this decision has him being about 8 miles from home! Somewhere he plans to come for meals and some help with laundry next Fall.

“I am glad this decision is over. It is all about the team and the playoffs so this is it. I love this team and group of guys and I really like our chances because we have just continued to get better and better. It is going to be a lot of fun!”

Congrats to Josh Brown and the Vikings. This is another great local kid for the Big Sky Viks and he should be a good one for sure!

Let's start a new 2014 recruiting thread. I'm tired to looking at govikgo's (or whatever name he's going by at the moment) diatribe. This is a dude that has serious hangups about Burton.

Roosevelt linemen Sione Taumoe'anga and Semise Kofe commit to Portland State

http://highschoolsports.oregonlive.com/news/article/-7070531377564551737/roosevelt-linemen-sione-taumoeanga-and-semise-kofe-commit-to-portland-state/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Roosevelt’s Tongan twosome plans to stay in Portland for college as Sione Taumoe'anga and Semise Kofe committed to Portland State during a recruiting visit last weekend.

The Roughriders’ defensive tackles chose the Vikings over several schools, and a major factor in the decision was their desire to take a Mormon mission. Both plan to go on their two-year missions starting next summer, meaning they won’t start college until the fall of 2016.

“Portland State was very accommodating with the LDS mission. The school was a good fit for their family and the mission,” Roosevelt coach Christian Swain said.

Taumoe'anga, 6-foot-2, 295 pounds, and Kofe, 6-foot, 285, were Class 5A all-state first-team selections. They helped lead Roosevelt to its first Portland Interscholastic League championship since 1995.

Taumoe'anga had scholarship offers from Army, Navy, Air Force, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Idaho and Portland State. Kofe, who won Roosevelt’s first-ever state wrestling title last year, had offers from Army, Idaho and PSU.

Swain said there “10 to 15 mid major schools that wanted to offer, but the mission became an issue. (Taumoe'anga and Kofe) were not willing to give on the mission.”

Kofe and Taumoe’anga weren’t determined to attend the same college, but were open to the idea. Playing together became more appealing during PSU’s recent recruiting pitches, Swain said.

Vikings assistant coach Ikaika Malloe was the primary coach to recruit the Roosevelt tackles.

“Portland State was really honest and hung in there with them. They really wanted to be there with Coach Malloe,” Swain said.

Viking Football Announces Three Early Signees

http://goviks.com/news/2014/1/16/FB_0116145443.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Portland State football added three student-athletes during the early signing period for junior college players and transfers. Nigel Burton has announced the signing of linebackers Zack Berg and Anthony McNichols, and kicker Ian Boozer.

Berg is a transfer from the University of Wyoming who has signed an athletic aid agreement. McNichols and Boozer are junior college athletes who have signed national letters of intent.

A native of Edmonds, WA, Berg played two seasons at Wyoming, competing in 18 games. He was also a redshirt in 2011. Berg, a 6-2, 230-pounder, starred at Edmonds Woodway (WA) High School.

Boozer played one season at Fullerton Junior College and will be a sophomore for the Vikings in 2014. He is originally from Eugene's Churchill High School. Boozer converted 7-8 field goals with a long of 47 yards last fall at Fullerton. He also made 50-52 extra points.

As a senior at Churchill in 2012, he made 6-7 field goals, 30-31 extra points and averaged 46.6 yards per punt, with a long of 74.

McNichols played the past two seasons at Golden West Community College. He was the Southern California Football Association Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. McNichols had 94 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, one sack, four interceptions, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and three pass breakups on the season.

McNichols, a 5-11, 225-pounder from Huntington Beach, CA attended Lakewood High School. He had 73 tackles, five sacks and a fumble recovery as a senior.

All three student-athletes will participate in spring football at Portland State.

Seems to be very little news coming out about offers and commits this year. Makes me a little nervous. Isn't signing day on Feb 5th?

How many seniors graduated?

Point taken. I guess I was referring more to "hype". I know, I know, message board hype means nothing. PSU has had two very good years recruiting, lots of young guys in the mix, so I need to relax a little. But still, I'd like to have a little "preview" of signing day. It just seems really quiet.
