2015 BSC Freshman of the year?

Bleacher Report is picking a guy from Portland St as the freshman of the year. Also mentions Zach Braxton http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2198815-predicting-the-2014-15-freshman-of-the-year-in-every-ncaa-basketball-conference/page/9" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He looks like a nice player and a good pick up for PSU. For him to get that award PSU will need to finish in the top 5. I'm not sure that they can do it. Someone in the top five, who has a freshman starting or getting significant playing time, will get the award. I could be wrong, but that is how it generally goes. Could it be from our team, yes. Is it likely to be from our team, no. If it is from our team, could it be Zack, yes. In that scenario, is it likely to be Zack, no. For it to be Zack, he would need to win a starting position or be the first big off the bench and that is not likely. If he were to red shirt and play his freshman year next year, then I think it would be likely that he would win a starting spot and get the award.

Just my opinion. :coffee:

Forget the Wildcats Big-Man, Sweeny doesn't only need to worry about Zach (which is a huge worry. Braxton, by conference, could be a one man wrecking crew), but he also needs to worry about Weber State's Jeremiah Jefferson. Also, there are a handful of other players joining Big Sky programs who look like major contributors. Sweeny does have quite the game and should be a handful moving forward.

I'm officially confused. This article names Braxton as a potential Freshman of the year and Olds says we're going to red shirt him? Where does publications like Bleacher Report get it's information?

Has he already been redshirted?

As far as I can tell, Braxton is Weber's highest rated HS recruit of the Rahe era. In fact, he's Rahe's only 3 star HS recruit. The only other 3 star recruit Rahe has brought to Weber was Otis, but he was a transfer.

Jeremy Senglin and Richaud Gittens were both Rival 3 Star Recruits. ESPN is the hardest, but they only scout players being evaluated/recruited by major programs.

True, but Otis and Braxton were the only two rated a 3 across the board.

Conference's Highest Rated Freshman

It's going to be an exciting year! I think Zach is going to make a huge contribution this year. I know there's been a lot of talk on this forum, but I've seen the practices and he's ready! He might be our best big next to Joel right now!

I can't think why a coach would red shirt an offensive threat and his teams second best rebounder! Weber has a history of being able to utilize its talents. All the coaches traveled the country to see this kid play. If he didn't have the ability, he wouldn't be here!

He looks fit in pick up games and he's developing physically. It's going to be nasty with Zach and Joel on the court!

I'm not disputing what Zach may or may not look like in a practice realm but I've seen my share of highly thought of freshman and JC transfers who look great in practice but never amaze when the play that matters begins. I'm excited for Zach and hope he not only plays this season but is as good as advertized and finds a starter's role before BSC play. Having said that, I remain firmly grounded with my hopes and expectations for him; if Zach ends up a redshirt I'll be disappointed but also excited for another year's extension of (hopefully) high-caliber talent.

So, how does a player earn a star? Is it something the coach gives out at the end of a season? So, If a player was a three year starter in high school, and the coach really liked him, would he get a star at the end of each year?

Is it sort of like me getting a gold star in kinder garden, when the teacher liked me?

Small forwards
Power forwards

Watch out for Fox at Idaho St.
You heard it here. You can ask Sweeney at PSU about that! He gave Compton High the business last year!
Ask Justin Strings at Sac St. He had to play him 3 times last year! Gave them the business too!!!

Your ISU player may well get the award, as long as ISU can finish in the top four of the BSC. That is a possibility with how ISU has been improving, but it would be a big jump from last year. I'm pulling for you. If ISU improves that much it will certainly help us, having them as a road partner.

There are quite a few talented newcomers in the BSC this year. Can't wait to get it started!!

I think Geno Luzcando from Wasatch Academy has a better shot at Freshman of the year than Fox does. Not sure how much playing time there will be for both of them. Maybe they both play at the same time, but that is alot of responsibility to put on two freshman. However wins the freshman of the year will be a player that plays some good minutes and is put in a position to win.
