2015 BSC Freshman of the year?

Don't worry about Fox oldrunner. I've seen him and he is a 6' 165lb pt who only averaged 15 pts 2 assists and less than 1 steal a game as a senior. He will get pushed around at this level until he bulks up. I don;t think he will get more than about 10 to 15 mins per game next year only because they don't have much else at the pt.

Who ever wins it, they will be getting a lot of minutes on a good team and they will, most likely, be a starter. The problem here is that the best teams in the BSC are the least likely to be in a position to start a freshman and if they do, that player is likely to score less than he would on a bad team. Last year was the exception, with Senglin getting the award for WSU, the league champion. It is more likely to come from the teams 2 to 4.

My prediction is that it will come from Sac. or UNC. I would put Montana or MSU in the mix if not for the fact that they are rebuilding with new coaches.

Last 5 Big Sky Fresh of the Year Awards
2012-13 Venky Jois, EWU; 33 mpg, 49% FG, 71% FT, 9.0 rpg, 2.4 bpg, 12.3 ppg
2011-12 Dylan Garrity, Sac; 34 mpg, 40% FG, 33% 3FG, 82% FT, 2.3 rpg, 6.9 apg, 8.1 ppg
2010-11 Byron Fulton, Weber State; 19 mpg, 44% FG, 48% 3FG, 3.5 rpg, 7.0 ppg
2009-10 Glen Dean, EWU; 33 mpg, 39% FG, 42% 3FG, 78% FT, 2.7 rpg, 4.2 apg, 13.3 ppg
2008-09 Damian Lillard, Weber State; 29 mpg, 43% FG, 37% 3FG, 84% FT, 2.9 apg, 3.9 rpg, 1.1 spg, 11.5 ppg

As I look at the last 5 winners, its almost one of those things that its nice to say you won, but what does it matter? Outside of Damian, winning in the past has not been an indication of future success in the Big Sky. Injuries and other factors have significantly impacted future performance.

Again, great award to win, but I think most winners would rather have a championship ring!

Welcome to the forum RUHS! I'll be honest, I don't know much about Fox. Please feel free to tell us why you feel he will, eventually, become the Big Sky Freshman of the Year next year.

I really don't see a lot of competition coming from Weber, because our freshman, will not be getting starters mins. The last player to get the award who wasn't getting starters mins was Byron Fulton. His last two seasons, he really struggled with injuries, but he kept giving the Cats the most he had. But, also, Byron was a RSFresh too. Something a lot of us have overlooked. Anyone who red shirted last year could be a candidate for the award too.

No matter, if Ian is going to be getting starters mins he might have a chance to get the award. I feel the only player at Weber who could get the award is Braxton.

Midmajor:
From what we have seen, only Fulton didn't "pan-out" per se. out of the last few FOY, Jois, Garrity, and Dean are/were very dangerous players. I feel badly for Dean. He transferred to Utah, and that pretty much stalled his development. I feel Senglin will only get better and will become a star in the Sky. Jois beat out Bolomboy, but that was because Jois got starters mins and Bolomboy was primarily a role player as a freshman. Getting starters mins, to me, is a primary factor behind a players ability to get the award.

Hello you left off Jeremy Singelton I mean Senglin.
2013-14 29.7 mpg 44% FG 40%3fg 10.9PPG 2.2 apg 2.2 rpg

With exception of Fulton, if your not getting 30mpg your not getting the award. It really does have to be the right player on the right team. I am thinking that Sweeney is going to have a great shot at it.

Hahaha! None of the above.
Just an avid Redondo Union basketball alumn and fan! I have been following them for years and even with the likes of Dijon Thompson (UCLA,Pheonix Suns), Wendell White (UNLV, Overseas pro), Andrew and Adam Zahn (Arizona, Oregon) and Alex Tucker (FIU)... I believe Fox is the best "basketball player" in school history.
He took a back seat in scoring at the coaches request or could have easily averaged 25ppg. Watch the Redondo vs Westchester game, or Redondo vs Modesto Christian games. Both are available on line...
That's why they play the game though... We shall see! I will be following all year. Should be fun. I'll just say it again .. You heard it here and WILL be surprised!

BTW.... Love Sweeney!! Got to watch him quite a bit at Compton High. I was shocked he didn't get recruited higher.

You've got to be Ian's dad, or someone closely related to him. Nobody is that big of a fan of "high school" program to come onto an opposing teams fan forum to talk up a player from that specific high school. HA!!! It is fine to be proud of your son. Tell Idaho State about it. Why do Weber State fans care? High school is a little bit different from college ball. Mr. Fox, Ian is a freshman at Idaho State. Enough said.

Agreed...RUHS, you seem to be a little too connected to this situation. I will say this, I like Fox's game. I think the coaches made the right move, if what you claim was true, that they held him back. By doing that, it helps a player mature and the see the floor better. Supposedly increases basketball IQ. We will just have to wait and see. But it does help a player become less selfish and increases the idea of TEAM more thoroughly.

If Fox is a bag of peanuts and all that, then he could very likely be next years FOY. ISU needs a PG. I also, really like Geno though. I've seen him play and thought he could become something special in Poky under Evan's tutelage.

I don't think that any coach would tell a kid to score less. They might tell them to pass more, or when to shoot, but 'score less', I don't think so. And, if he was told to pass first, then why are his assist numbers so low. I'm just not seeing the logic. Maybe he will have a great freshman year, I don't know. However, a lot of teams looked at him and a lot of teams passed. :twocents:

Just in case anyone is wondering how Ian Fox's Freshman of the year campaign is going. He has played 38 minutes in two games which is about right. However.....
He is 0 - 13 with 0 -10 coming from 3. He has 0 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 turnovers. How is that for a stat line RUHS (John Fox).

Question ... is BSC freshman of the year award based solely on conference play or the over all year?

Conference play is extremely important, but I think it is based over the entire season.

Thanks, that is what I assumed. We might have a freshman or two getting enough minutes by that time to at least be considered. We have so many weaknesses to address at this point who knows what might change.

Just in case you are following this saga, Ian Fox is no longer on the Idaho St roster. Seems he couldn't live up to RUHS's expectations and is going to take his talents elsewhere.
