Oregon City quarterback Thomas Hamilton receives offer from Portland State University

When quarterback Thomas Hamilton transferred from Baker High School to Oregon City over the summer it was widely regarded as a move to get college exposure.

If indeed that was the reason, it worked.

Hamilton received his first scholarship offer from Portland State University on Monday, and later admitted that he feels like the next level opportunity validates his decision to change schools for his senior season.

"It's made a difference," he said. "It's kind of the people I play with, too. I'm playing with Trevon (Bradford) and other kids who are also getting looked at. It's not just me. Colleges come through our school once a week talking to certain guys..."

As a junior at Baker, Hamilton was 146-of-241 passing (60.5 percent) for 1,470 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The 6-foot-4, 208-pound signal-caller may lack the polish of some of the other top quarterbacks in the state, like Sunset's Willy Pflug, Lakeridge's Eric Dungey, and West Salem's Cade Smith, but with prototypical size, his opportunity to blossom into a big-time playmaker places him among that group.

Relieved to receive his first offer, Hamilton is thrilled to have a college football future on the table.

"I definitely felt pressure this summer," he said, before reconsidering. "I don't know if it was as much pressure as just being anxious, wanting to know what would happen. It's a good feeling."

Hamilton attended a Portland State summer camp and has seen the football team play a few times, so he's already considering the possibility of becoming a Viking.

"I'm excited about it. I like their program, I like the conference and it's close. That's nice, too," he said. "It's realistic that I go there."

While Hamilton isn't ready to commit, he is no longer anxious about his future.

"It'll work out the way it should," he said. "Everything happens for a reason, so I'm sure it will work out."

Jonathan Boland, Parkrose star quarterback, commits to Portland State University during in-home visit

http://highschoolsports.oregonlive.com/news/article/-3975939348125720264/jonathan-boland-parkrose-star-quarterback-commits-to-portland-state-university-during-in-home-visit/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Parkrose star quarterback Jonathan Boland thought he was going to receive a scholarship offer from Portland State University during an in-home visit on the evening of November 26.

Instead, the man who was supposed to sit in his living room and sell the Vikings, Nigel Burton, was fired by the school, putting an immediate halt on Boland's recruitment.

It took a couple of weeks, but Portland State finally re-established a connection with the dual-threat quarterback, who accepted a scholarship from Vikings during an in-home visit from interim head coach Bruce Barnum and wide receiver coach Steve Cooper on Wednesday.

"It was just a huge relief. It was taking a monkey off my back," he said. "I was like, 'Oh my goodness.' It was a relief."

This season, Boland earned Northwest Oregon Conference offensive player of the year after throwing for 2,389 yards and 23 touchdowns with 772 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. However, Portland State is recruiting him with the intention of letting him feel out a position at the next level.

"It's really my decision," he explained. "They are really recruiting me as an athlete, but I can come in as a quarterback, wide receiver, just athlete. I just want to come in and if I'm looking good at slot receiver, (play) slot receiver. If I'm looking good at quarterback, play quarterback."

Boland hasn't played receiver since his freshman season in high school, but was a starter on the varsity team, so he's showed plenty of aptitude.

"It's going to be different. It's not 100 percent. We'll have to see where I'll play when I get there, but I'm not really nervous," he said. "I've played it before, it's just at a different level. I'm just going to have to compete."

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound signal-caller will begin his college career competing at quarterback, along with fellow class of 2015 commit Thomas Hamilton, a pocket passer from Oregon City High School.

The first in-home visit on the schedule ended before it began, the second led to a commitment. It took some time, but Boland finally has a college football future.

Jonathan Boland’s Ship Finally Comes In

http://www.northwestprepreport.com/jonathan-bolands-ship-finally-comes/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A young man from the Parkrose district on the Eastside of Portland made a lot of waves the last few seasons racking up hundreds of yards per game at times and bringing excitement and winning ways back to his school. Parkrose High, the home of the Broncos, is where Senior Jonathan Boland put on a show every Friday night for all to see. His stats and ability to lead and score at will became the stuff of legend and helped breathe excitement back into the program.

The 5’11”- 190 lb Senior had so many big plays over his 3 plus years as a Varsity QB it would take a good portion of the day to watch them all. His speed, his crafty moves and shifty legs, and his football IQ all played out in perfect harmony and he led his team like the maestro of a great orchestra. Week after week his name covered the headlines for Player of the Week and many analysts and websites carried him as a prospect of note who would make it.

Like many Seniors in this Class of 2015 he has had to sit and wait as offers from the regions colleges and schools have just not been coming in. Many are waiting it out hoping that some program will come along and grab them up before National Letter of Intent Day (Signing Day) in early February. Boland has been on the NWPR short list of athletes who will be offered next along with guys like Kellen Strahm from Sheldon High School in Eugene and Spokane, Washington speedster extraordinaire Jalen Hicks.

Like waiting for a ship to come in these recruits send messages and continue to reach out and for Boland today was the day his ship came in. It came from a perennial source that relies on local and NW talent, the Portland State Vikings.

With the recent firing of Coach Nigel Burton we have seen very little recruiting from the Vikings. In fact it has been a off year for the Big Sky team from Portland’s Park Blocks. Very few offers have been made and it seemed as they struggled through the season that perhaps the strategy was to wait until late in the game and then move in on the best kids not yet pledged to anyone.

Maybe this is the only play the Viking had to get back on top of the Big Sky and no doubt interim Head Coach Bruce Barnum executed such a move today coming after Boland; a kid we believe is going to be as big of an asset on defense as he is on offense.

“Tonight Coach Barnum offered me a full ride on my in-home visit. They want me to come in as an Athlete. I will start out at QB and see how it all pans out. If that doesn’t workout then I’m athletic enough to play a different position (mainly offense),” said Boland. “They might try me at slot receiver. I told Coach that they can play me anywhere! I’m just blessed to have the chance to live my dream, playing Divison 1 football.”
As fast as Boland is he can do all of it and we know he can help this team. At the in-home Boland did not hesitate. He committed to the Vikings knowing this was the moment he was waiting for.

The Division 1-AA schools usually do not offer full rides but Boland was quick to say he was getting the full cost of college covered. We wondered how that felt.

“Oh man it was a great feeling. When he was telling me what all I get for free for 4-5 years for school I broke out in tears,” he offered still glowing from the day.
With the recent firing other problems the Vikings have faced we asked Boland about his view of the program and where it is headed.

“I think it is going to be amazing. Coach Cooper and Coach Barnum fired me up today.”
This special young man defined his position and his community and leaves Parkrose with a legacy in the modern era to build on. His production was staggering and we have amassed the rough numbers having covered him for a number of years now.

Career Passing – 6,450 yards over 4 seasons
81 Passing Touchdowns over 4 seasons
Career Rushing – 3,000 yards over 4 seasons
Career Rushing TD’s - 34 over 4 seasons
Folks that is 9,450 Yards of offensive production and 125 Touchdowns. That is incomparable truly and just more reasons this is a big move for PSU.

Boland is a good student and is grounded in his faith and has a lot of the personality traits we see in the great ones. He is much like current PSU QB Paris Penn in that respect.

Given the opportunity to tell us who has helped him succeed and realize this dream he was quick to answer.

“First and for most God. Always first. Then my family and the Parkrose community sticking with me since freshman year. Got a lot of love for Parkrose. My two head coaches Tim Price and Mo France and lastly my mentor/trainer Paul Brown.”
Boland is a hot prospect and PSU offered and landed him. Coach Barnum is going to be playing out some more of these meetings and we predict he might just be in the drivers seat on some of the best top level kids left. Kids like Jonatahn Boland that a team can build a program around.

The Vikings are loaded already and in good shape to get better this next season so adding the missing elements will be a huge part of making the 2015 squad better. We are excited to see who the Viking longship sails in on next!

Intriguing prospect:

Alex Kuresa, the quarterback out of Mountain Crest High who played at BYU in 2011-12 as a receiver, then shined for Snow last season, is still uncommitted, according to Maughan. Kuresa was named the Offensive Player of the Year in the WSFL and threw for 2,734 yards and 25 touchdowns and also led the Badgers in rushing with 592 yards and eight TDs.
Kuresa has an offer from Portland State to play quarterback and will likely visit the Vikings’ campus this week.
Several Division I programs are recruiting him as a wide receiver.

Wonder if it was due to Riley leaving, lack of playing time, or something else. Regardless, looks to be a nice pick up.

Portland State picks up a Running Back:

Football recruiting: La Habra's Martin commits to Portland St.

La Habra first-team All-County running back Carlos Martin committed to Portland State over the weekend on his official recruiting trip, his step-father, Robert Gil, reports.

Martin rushed for 1,425 yards this past season for the Highlanders and was selected Freeway League offensive player of the year.

So looks like Special Teams coach picked up a new kicker/punter? Not sure how I feel about the use of this scholarship considering Gonzales played very well last year doing field goals (Not sure if he did kickoffs). Maybe will take the role of just punting?

From trolling around message boards it looks like he committed to BYU, came back early from his mission, and wanted to play QB rather than WR or CB.

Certainly adds an interesting mix to the QB position.
