2016 Hot - Hurry Hurry

I have been to the last 3 spring games and it is my opinion that this one was the most disappointing in terms of showing the potential for the fall.
I didn't think that the amount of players suited up this year would be less than last year's spring game, but that happened. I understand that there were a number of injured players who did not suit up. Is this a result of their strength training program and/or the amount of players who transferred? Disturbingly an assistant coach told me, "we'll see how many players we lose this summer." And that quote were HIS EXACT WORDS!
Though the defense had less players suited up, Coach Kerr had the players attentive and always ready for the snap. The offense looked rushed and I thought I was watching a 'Chinese fire drill' - not sure of themselves and not looking like a team ready to run a spread offense. Regarding the offense, maybe the reason they are switching their offense is because you don't need any TEs to run the spread. Their were only 4 TEs suited up and it is well known that Vander Velde is contemplating not returning. Just a year ago Vandy was listed as one of the top 10 TEs in the Big Sky. Out of the other 3 remaining TEs, only Leonard can play at the 1AA level. If he loses about 20 pounds he could be awesome.
Depth will be a problem. Enough said.

Honestly I'm getting tired of hearing about players not coming back. I really don't give a shit who is at UNC or not. I've got better things to worry about than where some spoiled 19 year old kid is going to play college football. If some kid doesn't want his college paid for, by all means find a player willing to take the roster spot. We may suck for another ten years, but at least we won't have some rotten kids on our team. I'll cheer for whoever decides to continue his career in Greeley. The rest can go screw themselves. College football is a privilege, something these young kids tend to forget.

Are you serious with this post? Your saying that just because that a player that doesn't want to play for this program, he is a spoiled brat? When the culture around this program is poison and a player doesn't want to be around that any more they are spoiled rotten? You seem to have a lot of highly opinionated biased without any facts.

This board has been around and around on this topic. I have to say though that while I usually respect your opinion Beardown, I think you are off base on this one. I am much more inclined to agree with BigRed. The number of players that have left the program and the potential that another group will leave the program now that Spring ball has concluded is a direct reflection on the health of the program. It is not a statement about today's kids being spoiled or entitled. Sure there are always going to be a few of those, but most of these kids work their butts off in school, in training and on the practice field. Most are on a partial scholarship not a full ride. They are far from spoiled, particularly at this level or lower levels. They are thankful for the opportunity the program has given them, but in turn they have the right to expect the program and the administration to live up to their end of the bargain as well. That includes providing the kids with great leadership and quality coaching. If the atmosphere is toxic, and all indications point to it being just that, then these kids should have the right to choose to move on without fans and supporters telling them to go screw themselves. I will support those who stay and I will wish those who choose to leave the best of luck.

First of all Beardown, If you "don't give a shit" then don't act like you have any idea about what these "kids" are going through. Not every player has their college paid for or gets even close to what they deserve in the way of scholarship. I guarantee that 9 out of 10 of the players that choose to leave have legitimate reasons for leaving and are not just "spoiled 19 year old kids". Don't pretend you know who any of these players are because clearly you have no idea the first thing about any of them and could care less about them anyways. Spend your precious time elsewhere, you're clearly no Bears fan.

If a kid throws away scholarship money, I'm sorry, but that's an incredibly selfish move. If things are so horrible, why are the team captains not taking this to the Athletic Director?

But according to you it leaves money for someone else. AND that's implying that the kids that leave have a decent scholarship. It would be more selfish if a player kept their scholarship and wasn't performing in school. These scholarships are meant for student-athletes and many of the athletes on full-rides don't perform in school. It's smart to leave a program that is not treating those that perform on and off the field fairly, not selfish. Besides, it's not always about the money or a kid quitting just because of one little thing. Don't forget to consider other options like personal factors, passion for the game (which can be lost when you're a part of a crappy program), unfair circumstances, other opportunities, etc. Not every kid just "throws away scholarship money". Give them some credit.

The athletic director more than likely won't listen to the team captains...he stands behind his coaches remember? I'm sure there have been issues brought to his attention.

Good point Beardown. In fact, that is another good example of how Coach Collins has lost control of the team. He decided to not have the team vote for team captains until fall camp. In other words, there is no peer leadership for the summer. 19 to 22 young men need accountability, and they will not have it. It has been conjectured by numerous players that the reason Coach Collins made this decision is because he knew that the only returning starter that is a senior player, would probably would have been named captain, and he is contemplating not returning. Not a good sign. Thanks for bringing up the team captain subject.

Are things really that bad? But again, I won't lose a minute of sleep if a kid leaves UNC. If they don't want to be here, then by all means leave.

Sadly beardown, I believe things really are that bad. I for one and I know plenty of others that have dropped out of Blue & Gold and will not be buying any football tickets until the cancer is gone. As a fan it is our only recourse because nobody has been listening. Coach Collins should have been released by now. Personnaly I hate all of this crap. I said years ago, all this losing does is build hate and discontent and we are at the peak of it. AARRRGGGHHH

Summer time is when "captains" step up and lead the team. A player doesn't need the title of captain to lead and make a difference. Under Coach Glenn and Dalton captains were voted on during 2 a days. There was never captains during the summer.

I like the fact that they are waiting until fall to vote for captains. Let the boys see who shows up, steps up, and leads this summer, then vote. I agree with Rateylbk, true leaders don't need a title.

Correct. The UNC players are the ones who vote for their captains. The coaches should NEVER appoint captains. Its just that Coach Collins told them that they would wait until fall to do that. In a normal program, I think that that would be alright. However, UNC is not the normal program, possibly the worst in the FCS. Therefore I believe that the players should have elected their captains in the spring so that they could be leaders during the summer. These guys need all the leadership they can get - cause they don't get it from the HEAD coach.

Are you a former player under Collins? Parent of a current player?

I have a professional and working relationship with the UNC administration and coaching staff. I also know a couple of the players well. I apologize that I can't say anymore.
