News coming down tonight is that Ballard (Seattle, Wash.) High School DT Raemo Trevino has made a verbal commitment to Portland State University.

“Talked over with my family and felt like what they’re doing down there with all their coaches is something special,” Trevino told Northwest Elite Index. “There a team that’s on a rise, and I want to be apart of that. I also felt like it was a great choice not only for football, but the educational aspect.”

Portland State is off to a great start this season, with wins over Washington State and Idaho State. Trevino plans to visit the Vikings on October 3rd, when they play host to the University of North Dakota.

The Vikings like Trevino at Defensive Tackle, and he is one of the state’s best in the 2016 recruiting class. Trevino plays with quick hands, good strength and one of the best get-offs in the region.

With recruiting in the rearview mirror, Trevino can put full focus into his senior season. Personally, he is off to a bit of a slow start, partly because he has been hampered by a lingering ankle injury.

That hasn’t slowed the Beavers, who are 2-1 after an impressive 66-48 win over West Salem (OR).

“We’ve gotten better every week,” Trevino said. “Week three we really started to click and it’s something special we’re putting together. I’m very confident we can put a special run this year into playoffs, but not a lot of people know about Ballard just yet.”

Ballard enters league play this week against Chief Sealth, and are the favorites in the Valley Division, so you can expect to hear more from Trevino and his teammates.

North’s Geenen ready for another run before transfer

http://www.thenorthwestern.com/story/sports/high-school/football/2015/10/14/norths-geenen-ready-another-run-transfer/73948588/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This Friday night will mark the last regular season game for the Oshkosh North football team, and if they win, they clinch a spot in the playoffs.

Mikaal Geenen, the defensive leader for the Spartans, is hoping for at least a few more games before his run with the Spartans, and the school, comes to an end.

Once the semester is up, Geenen will be packing his bags and heading to Portland, Oregon. Geenen is transferring to Grant High School to finish the last semester of school with his cousin because the senior has a chance to play football at Portland State University.

A few years ago Geenen was invited to a football camp held at Portland State. He was invited back for two straight years and last summer the coaches told him that, if he wanted, he has a spot on the roster.

“I had went out to Portland State for a camp and I got invited back to it two years in a row,” Geenen said. “My aunt works at the camp but I still had to show my stuff. I tried it on offense and they didn’t need me there so I went to defense and they liked me there, so I have a spot on the team.”

It will be tough leaving Oshkosh North and not being able to graduate with his best friends, but Geenen knows this is an opportunity that he wants to take full advantage of. Geenen will be living with his aunt in Portland.

“At semester I’m going to move out there to try to get residency,” Geenen said. “I get to graduate with my cousin out there and it’s just a new scene, different people.”

It had to be an ideal situation for Geenen to play football at the next level. Other teams had interest in him, but he didn’t have mutual feelings. Until Portland State called.

Portland State is a FCS team and is a part of the Big Sky Conference. Its currently ranked No. 25 in the nation.

“I always loved football, but I knew it would have to come to an end inevitably,” Geenen said. “It’s just a bonus because I love playing the sport. Other colleges were looking at me, I just wasn’t too interested in it. It was basically ‘we’ll go see what’s happening out there, see if I can live with my Aunt or not,’ but it worked out. I’m in a nice place right now.”

Geenen will be playing defensive back for the Vikings.

Because he has transformed into a leader for the Spartans over the last four years, North football coach Chris Kujawa said that he sees Geenen finding success at the next level.

“If he continues to work like he’s been working this entire year, I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t have any successful career there,” Kujawa said. “Mikaal has matured 10-fold from freshman year to where he’s at right now. There has been a huge maturation process, you can see that he’s goal oriented, you see that he’s taking things very seriously. He sees his future and he’s going and grabbing it.”

But before he can start thinking about the move, he has his mind focused on the rest of the season. The Spartans will travel to face Wisconsin Rapids Friday and if they win, they are guaranteed a playoff spot. If they lose, they finish with a 4-4 record in the Valley Football Association-South and are still playoff eligible.

It has been quite the up and down season for the two-time defending VFA South champs. The Spartans started the year 2-3 but have won their last three games. The defense has played solid all year long, but the offense is starting to find their groove.

And that’s a bad sign for opposing teams.

“The year has picked up a ton, on both sides of the ball,” Geenen said. “Our defense has been there for most of the year but we are starting to get things clicking on all cylinders.”

Geenen, who plays safety, is the ‘quarterback of the defense’ for the Spartans. He leads the team with 63 tackles and has two interceptions.

He didn’t start on defense until this season, but it didn’t take long for him to get acquainted to the spot.

“He’s taking some ownership, he takes personal pride in making sure we are in the right spots,” Kujawa said of Geenen. “He just wants to make plays, almost to a fault sometimes where he gets himself out of position but he’s starting to develop trust in his teammates and allowing them to make plays and good things are happening for us.”

“I definitely take pride, it’s getting everyone to work on the same page,” Geenen added. “You have to communicate and make sure everyone is communicating, knowing what we’re seeing during the game because everything is a little bit different every game, every play, so we just have to pick up those little things by communicating.”

Geenen started to play football in fourth grade. He said he got into it because his older brothers were good athletes so he was motivated to be just like them.

Also a track star, Geenen made his first appearance at the WIAA State Tournament this last spring. A jumper, Geenen finished 10th in the triple jump with a personal record jump of 43 feet, 2 1/2 inches.

“State was a great experience, to see all the fans represent Oshkosh North to the fullest,” Geenen said. “I did a pretty good job, it was my best jump I had. It was just a great atmosphere and I felt like that helped it out.”

Davis Alexander Makes His Commitment

http://www.northwesteliteindex.com/2015/10/15/davis-alexander-makes-his-commitment/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Great news out of the Narrows League where Gig Harbor (Wash.) QB Davis Alexander made a verbal commitment to Portland State University.

This comes on the heels of Portland State signing head coach Bruce Barnum to a new 5-year contract, and isn’t without coincidence.

“I had a great talk with coach [Nick] Whitworth, coach [Steve] Cooper and coach Barnum,” Alexander told Northwest Elite Index. “Once I found out the school had made the commitment to coach Barnum and new he had his contract and talking it over with my parents I knew it was the right fit for me.”

Alexander received the offer on September 26th while visiting the Vikings for their game against Western Oregon, and had nice things to say about the program on and off the field.

“The stadium is so cool,” Alexander said. “It is where the Portland Timbers [Major League Soccer] play, so it’s a unique structure. The college atmosphere was very cool to look at, they had us sit directly behind the student section.

“I like the school a lot. I know people that go there and tell me they love it. It’s a unique environment being right in the city, I like how everything you need is available where you are at.”

Alexander’s story has been a consistent rise since taking over the starting duties at the beginning of last season. He was voted the Narrows League MVP last season while helping Gig Harbor to a League Championship. The offseason saw Alexander win a second straight Battle in Seattle 7-on-7 title, along with a second tournament MVP. Alexander culminated his offseason with a tremendous showing in the inaugural Northwest Nine, finishing 3rd, among some of the region’s top QB’s.

With recruiting in the rear view mirror, Alexander can now put his focus strictly on Gig Harbor.

“It is a huge weight off my shoulder,” Alexander noted. “I am now fully focused on helping my team get to the Tacoma Dome.”

We couldn’t be happier for Alexander, as we have seen up close the amount of work he has put in during his high school career, and wish him the best of luck going forward.

Gig Harbor QB Davis Alexander commits to Portland State

Too short to ever get to an NCAA Division I school?

Guess not.

Gig Harbor High School’s senior quarterback Davis Alexander, who is listed at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds and last year earned the 4A Narrows League MVP, committed to Portland State University Thursday night.

“It was just really cool to reach one of my dreams and go D-1,” Alexander said. “I hear a whole bunch of stuff. Whatever. You’re not tall enough, blah, blah, blah. It doesn’t really mean much to me because when a team like Portland State puts their faith in me, it means a lot.”

Alexander led the second-ranked Tides to a 6-0 start entering Friday with 1,451 passing yards and 651 rushing yards. The dual-threat quarterback will enter a system under Portland State coach Bruce Barnum that has allowed current PSU quarterback Alex Kuresa to throw for 705 yards and rush for another 287 through five games (4-1).

And it was no coincidence Alexander committed after Portland State announced Wednesday that Barnum had signed a five-year contract after entering the season as the interim coach.

“That was a big thing for me and my family,” Alexander said. “We wanted to make sure he was going to be there.

“It felt like a place that was right for me and not only did I recognize that, but my parents did, too. I like the coaching staff there. I like the ‘Barney Ball’ philosophy of blue collar and work hard. It felt like something that I work with pretty well.”

Portland State opened its season with a 24-17 win over Washington State.

Alexander was named to The News Tribune’s All-Area team last season as a multi-purpose player. He said he wanted to get his commitment out of the way as earlier as possible to ensure his focus was on his senior season at Gig Harbor.

“Right now, I just want to focus on the season,” Alexander said. “We got a good shot to reach our goals and get to the Tacoma Dome and I wanted our teammates to know that I was focused on the season and college will come later. That was big for me.”

He said he attended Portland State’s game against Western Oregon on Sept. 26 and was offered just before the start of the game. He also had offers from Montana Tech and the College of Idaho.

Gig Harbor QB Alexander commits to Portland State

Gig Harbor High senior quarterback Davis Alexander is headed to Portland State to continue his football career. Alexander announced his commitment last week on Twitter.

“After talking with my family, I thought it was a good fit for me,” Alexander said Tuesday. “My family also recognized that, which I thought was pretty special.”

Alexander visited in late September with some of his teammates and liked what he saw. Portland State’s coaches had been recruiting him since the start of the season.

“I like their blue collar-type attitude,” Alexander said. “They’re going to outwork everyone. This year, they were OK with being called the underdogs.”

If they’re the underdogs, they’re a pretty solid one. The Vikings knocked off Washington State earlier this season in Pullman, 24-17. Alexander’s older brother, Dillon, is currently a senior at WSU.

“He was texting me saying, ‘There’s no way they’re actually going to do this,’” Alexander said. “To be honest, I was so jacked (when they won).”

Alexander has been wildly successful in Gig Harbor’s offense as one of the state’s best dual-threat quarterbacks. Tides coach Aaron Chantler doesn’t think there’s anyone better in the state.

“I’m biased, but no, I don’t think there is,” Chantler told The News Tribune last week. “There are some very good quarterbacks in this state. (Lake Stevens’) Jacob Eason is a very talented quarterback going to Georgia. But he is more of a pocket passer. Huge arm.

“Blake Gregory at Skyline is a very good quarterback, Gresch Jensen (of Auburn Mountainview) is a very good quarterback and Liam Fitzgerald of Camas is a very good quarterback. And all those guys can run a little bit. But then you look at Davis’ numbers and what he really does in the run game — it means he’s not just a guy who runs around. He leads our team in rushing. I mean, that’s no coincidence. He’s special.”

And it was no coincidence Alexander committed after Portland State announced Oct. 14 that Barnum had signed a five-year contract after entering the season as the interim coach.

“That was a big thing for me and my family,” Alexander told The News Tribune. “We wanted to make sure he was going to be there.”

Alexander is likely to redshirt, with junior quarterback Alex Kuresa having a big year and likely to come back for his senior season. But Alexander will still compete for the job.

“If they give me a chance, I’ll try to take advantage of it,” Alexander said. “They’re going to let me compete.”

Alexander has visited the Portland area three or four times recently and said he likes the city.

“I think it’s really cool — the campus is right in downtown Portland,” he said. “I’m a big Damian Lillard fan. I’ll try to go to some (Trail Blazers) games.”

Alexander may see some familiar faces, too. Peninsula grad Robert Kvinsland is redshirting at Idaho State and former Tides wideout Reese Carlson is having a good season with Montana, to name a couple.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Alexander said. “It’s pretty crazy. You play against these guys in high school and the opportunity to play them in college is unreal.”

I hate to compare, but Davis reminds me of Alex Kuresa:

TNT All-Area football player of the year Davis Alexander of Gig Harbor is not short on talent

Dual-threat quarterback, at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, headed to Portland State on scholarship

Had almost 4,000 total yards his senior year — 2,825 passing and 1,091 rushing

Developed on-the-run throwing skills replicating NFL’s Michael Vick from Madden video game

Notice what number he wears. The rest of the Bid Sky might get tired of seeing #7 on the field after next year......

I think it was this weeks coaches call when someone asked Barnum what they did in the off week. He said they spent time recruiting. The High school season isn't over yet, I think we'll hear more when the season's finally over. I have to believe that they are having good reception from kids. One reason we may not have heard a lot, is that the level of recruit is actually greater, and those kids may wait longer to decide.

I have been looking through Northwest Prep report a little for information on recruiting. I thought in the past, they had breakdowns of who has been offered and whether they have committed or not. NW Preps has the top 200 players, but it doesn't have the offered section. Is there another avenue where someone tracks all this?

I was reading on twitter that the JUCO signing date just passed with announcements of players signed by Oregon and Oregon State. Any word on any JUCO grabs Coach Barnum grabbed?

No JC signings so far that I know of. The Vikings have interest in a Running Back from Palomar JC and a couple Tight Ends from Butte JC and College of the Siskiyous. Haven't seen anything else, but will share when I do find info. PSU I would assume are looking at the DL and LB position at the JC level also, maybe even the DB position. Here's a site for JC football that may be helpful: https://twitter.com/JUCOFFrenzy" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not a commit, but looks to be leaning towards Portland State:
